Poomerio Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 So what do you guys think of the Santa Fe Super Chief (#10020) I am going to buy it, and also #10025, and then motorize the Santa Fe. Any opinions? Thanks, - Poomie Quote
xwingyoda Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 I am not a huge fan of trains in general but I realy love those old American trains *wub* That SSC made me buy my first Lego train and I really think its a thing of beauty !! So definitly buy that piece of US history and probably IMO, the best Lego train ever (sorry croc fans >:-) ) !! Enjoy that beauty !! *yoda* Quote
Poomerio Posted August 7, 2007 Author Posted August 7, 2007 I hope to :P I just ordered it from S@H - Poomie Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Poomerio: The SFSC is the best engine Lego ever made. You will enjoy it. The design is far better than that of any train made to date. The cabin includes room for the cunductor and an engineer. It's a great set! Here's some images I took a while back as well as a link to "face-off" between the SC and the BNSF: Image Review Face-Off Also, here's a link to a poll for favorite engine: Favorite Engine These might be some nice references for you. Hope you enjoy your new engine! I'm sure you'll *wub* it. Quote
SavaTheAggie Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 10020 is the set that was responsible for getting me started in trains, and while it is no steam engine, it remains to be my favorite official LEGO train set. That would probably explain why my Super Chief is 9 cars long and I'm working on a "B" engine unit. I'm of the opinion that every AFOL should have/must have a copy of 10020 simply because of it's incredible design and display value. --Tony Quote
Holodoc Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 So what do you guys think of the Santa Fe Super Chief (#10020)I am going to buy it, and also #10025, and then motorize the Santa Fe. A brilliant idea! *y* I did that myself two/three months ago. I bought one 10020 and five 10025. Then I went shopping at Bricklink and got the bricks to "pimp" three of the 10025 into 10022 according to this thread (thanks Dfenz!). Hinckley showed us a nice way to add some red and yellow stripes on the cars here. As we are not talking about prizes I don Quote
Poomerio Posted August 7, 2007 Author Posted August 7, 2007 (edited) The motor is definitely a must have. I have a motor ready, and I have to wait about 2 weeks for it to come, because of the pick-a-brick. But so worth it ^^ So to anybody that's motorized it, did you encounter any problems in the motorize-ation? - Poomie Edited August 7, 2007 by Poomerio Quote

If you're going to motorize your Super Chief, you NEED to replace the lowest upside-down plates under the passenger wagons with tiles. The cars can lean in turns, especially if the curves are not perfectly level, and the studs of those plates will drag against the rails and put unnecessary stress on your motor. This isn't very important with 10025, but if you plan to convert any of your 10025s to 10022s, it's very important. I had this very thing happen to me and I ended up burning out a motor at a TexLUG event. When I finally found the problem, after the motor burned out, I saw that the outermost studs on the plates under the cars were missing half of the plastic; the studs were no longer circles but half circles or less. I was fortunate to have an extra motor on hand, as well as tiles to modify the design, and I've not had a problem since. --Tony Quote
Poomerio Posted August 7, 2007 Author Posted August 7, 2007 Damn, you might just have lost me. So if I was to just put a 9V motor into the 10020, it should be good and well? (Just replacing the front wheels with the motor?) And a silly question, but does the 10020 and the 10025s' wheels turn when cornering? =P I have no plans on converting the 10025 to a 10022, though. Thanks, - Poomie Quote
Holodoc Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 I have no plans on converting the 10025 to a 10022, though. Well, get your bricks from the list mentioned above and then visit Brickfactory to get the instructions! ;-) Quote

Thanks, - Poomie Yes, replacing one truck with a motor works perfectly, and 10020 even comes with instructions on how to do it. However, you'll want to replace the rear wheels instead of the front (as per the instructions), as the front wheels have a decorative side that helps complete the rounded look on the nose of the locomotive. Yes, the wheel trucks rotate independantly of the rail cars and locomotive when in curves. --Tony Quote
Poomerio Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 (edited) Well I just read through some 10020 instructions on converting it to a 9V train, and it seems pretty straight forward. On another note; my dad, who works for Royal Mail, just checked the tracking on my order. It left Germany this morning, and I'm guestimating that it'll be here in a week, tops. Damn, those guys sure work fast. Even if Germany is about 600+ miles away 8-| - Poomie Edited August 9, 2007 by Poomerio Quote
Poomerio Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 Well, just to keep you guys informed; my order is now in England. Has been since 7pm. I'm expecting it tomorrow or the day after ^^ Then I'm going to be ordering #7997, and MODing it into a custom railway station. I've also MODed my #7945, and there is some track running behind it. Yay! Lego on! - Poomie Quote
MatthewUSA Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 I have some thoughts for you about the SC, Poomerio. I am glad to hear you have sent in an order for this set through S@H. You will not be disappointed. There are two reasons this set is worth it. 1) The design of this set is very, very good. TLC did a great job at modeling the locomotive to the real one. 2) I am pretty sure the license agreement with BNSF has expired so picking this up now was a smart move. TLC will not be producing another one, unless they resign the license, but we will definitly see. As to the motorization of the locomotive. I highly recommend you build a "B" unit for you consist. The weight of the five cars plus the locomotive is quite a bit for the single motor. You will definitly need two to get the train moving at a good speed. Model On!! Quote
Poomerio Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 Well I only am planning on buying 2-3 carriages for the train; I'm mainly going to be using it for carrying parcels' and packages around the small town of Hawkston for its' residents. When the time comes for a passenger train, I will only be topping 3 carriages. - Poomie Quote
Poomerio Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 Some more news; I tracked the package this morning and it was sent out for delivery at 7:19am from the North West London Depot. Should be here possibly lunchtime, or a little later. Parcels' ON! - Poomie Quote
Poomerio Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 The #10020 and the #10025 arrived a few hours ago. I built them both up, set up a quick circle of track, and I must say; it is a beautiful train! I got a booklet in my box, and it said that the #10022 will be avaliable in September. Well what I'm going to do is this; I have a mail car at the front, just behind the engine. I will put a baggage car behind that, then the dining car, followed by the observation car. What I noticed, is that it is a little top-heavy. If I corner too fast, it will start to tip. Go faster, and it falls over. Luckily, only the roof of the mail car came off :-) I'm sure the full train, when completed, will look just fantastic; by the time that comes, all of the railway will be complete; station and everything. - Poomie Quote

If it was in the set box, it probably is a very old booklet and is out of date. If it does come available for you, and you plan on building the dining and observation car (10022 x 2), then I HIGHLY suggest you get yourself a third 10022 to have the passenger car. You'll kick yourself in a few years if you pass on that opportunity, plus a train of one of each set looks really great (10020, 10022 x 3, 10025 x 2). http://www.flickr.com/photos/savatheaggie/847226717/ As for being top heavy and falling over in curves, that's true with all trains. As an added bonus, when you build steam engines like I do, not only do you have to worry about them tipping over in curves, but going too fast can also cause a steam engine to derail in a curve or worse shatter, sending parts everywhere and at least one car is going to go flying off the track. At the TexLUG event where the above picture was taken, we decided to have a little fun with the Metroliner. We put two regulators on one loop of track, and set up the Metroliner (#4558, #10001). Since the Metroliner, compared to the Santa Fe, weighs almost nothing, it accellerates very quickly. We let it go into the long straightaway and cranked up both regulators on full. The electricity surged into the 9v motor and the train flew. Literally. Right off the table when it hit that turn. http://www.flickr.com/photos/savatheaggie/848098042/ Medic! --Tony Quote
Poomerio Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 I'm sure it came in the box everything that was shipped in. I'll go have a look. OK, I'm back. The "Official Lego Train Catalog" was lying around in the bottom of the shipping box. That means that I will be able to get the #10022 in September, very hopefully. Yes, I think I will get myself all of the carriages; it does look super cool ^^ But wouldn't that put strain on the motor, no? I mean, the weight of the trains XD - Poomie Quote

Poomerio Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 >.< Snap. Well then I'll have to order the pieces either seperately, or off of EBay or something. Damn; I couldn't find a date on that damn catalog XD - Poomie Quote

Poomerio Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 Damn, that's awesome XD I wouldn't dare smash my Santa Fe though; I love it too much *wub* But having said that.. >:-) Meh, depends if I need to release some.. "anger". Haha. - Poomie Quote
SavaTheAggie Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Unfortunately several parts of the Metroliner broke in that crash. A coupler, a bogie plate, and at least one other part but I don't remember exactly what it was. Falling at that speed off a table onto a concrete exibit hall floor will do that. Fortunately it wasn't *MY* Metroliner. X-D --Tony Quote
