Sarge and Eric headed for the Fountain of Danab in the Kalakita bog.

It was evening again when Eric led Sarge to the fountain in the bogs he had visited with Boomingham and Rex last night. But as soon as they arrived, Eric noticed that something was off. Instead of sparkling, the water of the fountain was sickly green and stinking. It also had a red streak on it, leading to the corpse of the Sister of Danab, Elessa, that they had encountered previously. The Enki from last night was present as well, wailing sorrowfully.

"Arrrrooooo...."

Eric held his hand in front of him and refused the coin, for now at least.

QM Note: But you already said you'd take the gold earlier...

After getting the coin for the poison, Eric stepped towards the Boutique.

"Hello," he says, trying to keep it simple. "Bit early for my shift, huh?"

The two knights lifted their visors and gave a meaningful glance at each other.

heroicaquest130-greenbaboonknight.jpg

"You can say that again, buddy."

heroicaquest130-violetwolfknight.jpg

"Been out all night keeping the riff-raff in check, have you?"

The two knights appeared to have fallen for Boomingham's ruse.

OoC: Whoops! I didn't remember I said that. Still, I'll give it back to Sarge for now. Sorry for the hassle.

Eric took out the coin they had received for selling the poison. His eyes darted from the gold pieces to the fountain. He gently shook his head.

"Here," Eric said stretching out his hand towards Sarge, "you keep it until this business is resolved. You were right, we'll get more out of it once we leave Salmanda. I'll take my cut in Eubric."

He kneeled down and inspected the poison closer. Turning his head towards Sarge, he said: "You think this has anything to do with the poison we sold this afternoon?" The Nord got back up and firmly stated: "If so, we better silence those who did this and keep our involvement under covers."

Eric then walked towards the Enki and looked it in the eyes. "I almost feel bad for this guy. He probably knows more of what happened here, but I'm not one of those crazies capable of talking with creatures."

Boomingham bites his lip under his visor, a little concerned as to how much the knights all knew about each other's dalliances. He had assumed that they all kept to themselves... surely they weren't all corrupt across the board? These chaps, at least, he had assumed just liked to mess around behind closed doors, but here they were, apparently aware of the Crimson Bear's crimes too... he had hoped they'd help him deal with the Azure Eagle, but if they knew about his connections and were okay with them...

"Easy enough time, yes." Boomingham keeps his sentences short. Fewer chances to slip up. "Some hooligans, a group of mercenaries I think, attacked me, but it was easy enough to deal with. So many sisters in the city bring in so many strangers. Made me a little worried. Thought I'd come back and see that you were okay as well. No idea where the Azure Eagle is, do you? Who knows why the baddies came after me, might be moving against the lot of us."

"The boss went to meet with his sister. You know, that sister." The Green Baboon Knight winked. "Surprised you didn't bump into him at the slums."

heroicaquest130-violetwolfknight.jpg

"Didn't you listen to him? Someone might be onto us! If that drunken bastard Scorpion has tattled on us, we're all screwed!"

heroicaquest130-greenbaboonknight.jpg

"Aww, chillax! We're top honchos, remember? We rule this city while the old lady's organizing tea parties up at the palace. Nobody's gonna believe the loser over us. Right, buddy?" The knight nudged Boomingham jokingly.

Sarge grumbled, he was tired and needed that water. "Talk about silence, we're going to burn the culprit to the megablocking ground."

He sighed, obviously furious and ignored the Enki. "An attack on a sister is an attack on us. We gotta be methodical bout this, may be another sister offing her opponents. I'll mix some water with a remedy; if that don't work I'll continue in the morning and you meet with boomers, hunt down that black market."

He shook his head and searched the body for clues and equipment.

"This means something." He hesitated then continued "Somewhere out in that city is someone who thinks he can megabluck with us. Let's go prove that dipshit wrong" he grinned at Eric and drew the Demonic greatsword with a shing

He collected the poisoned water in a bottle, mixed it with a remedy and drank it.

Boomingham exhales softly. Disappointment. He had hoped that... when he had fought in the Orcish War, his boys had been the only thing he had trusted. They had stood by his side, and he at theirs. The standard for knights had gone down, it seemed.

The Crimson Bear nods. "I figured as much. I'll go have a word with him, see if we can't track down whoever might be meddling." Boomingham bites his lip, taking another gamble. "Can't rightly recall where their hiding out now. Always moving about, here and there. Wouldn't be able to remind me, would you, buddy?" he asks the Baboon.

He shook his head and searched the body for clues and equipment.

The Sister's throat had been slit, and it looked as though she had tried to crawl to the healing water but had barely not made it in time. Aside from the womanly clothes, all she had on were her jewelry, worth perhaps 100 gold in total when sold.

He collected the poisoned water in a bottle, mixed it with a remedy and drank it.

Sarge's experiment managed to remove the poison, but the magical properties of the water were gone as well. It was just plain water.

Eric looked on from a distance as Sarge inspected the corpse. He saw the shimmering of the jewels. Even though he knew Sarge was already going to take them, Eric instructed: "Take the shiny stuff. It's got to be worth something."

You can never be too sure. While Sarge drank his water, Eric inspected the Enki. He was no connoisseur of Salmandian wildlife, but maybe he could find a clue on it.

Softly, not wanting to make fun of himself, he spoke to the beast. Perhaps it might understand something of what he said, but most likely it wouldn't understand a word. Couldn't hurt to try, though. "Anything you saw? Can you help us,... get us in the right direction? Anything?"

Eric couldn't see any signs of injury on the beast. It had probably arrived after the murder.

heroicaquest130-enki.jpg

"Arrr... Arrrrooo..." The great beast stared at Eric with its sad, wizened eyes, but it did not seem to understand him.

Sarge pocketted the jewelry by habit, "Slit throat ain't very Venomari is it mate?" He said absentmindedly to Eric.

"I'm going to get some sleep at the sanctuary. Cheapskate that I am, and we need to tell the aunt about this. Should join me so we can move tomorrow night."

Sarge bottles some of the poisoned water then searched the scene with his magnifying glass, before heading to the holy district, carrying the corpse over his shoulder.

Ooc: meeting in the holy district is probably a good idea actually, so we can act as a group tomorrow. :classic:

Eric looked around and scanned the area for anything out of the ordinary.

"Well, that sucks", he muttered under his breath, knowing his tracking skills were nowhere near that of a skilled Ranger. "Where are those forest-loving, tree-hugging Rangers when you need them?", Eric asked aloud, to none in particular.

"It's not that I really care about this -or any of the- Sister, but let's gut the bastard who did this. That's some A-grade water he spilled there", Eric grinned.

EDIT:

"The Venomari priest is probably our first and as of yet only lead, though", Eric replied coldly. "I heard there was some sort of rivalry going on between those guys and the Sisters. Maybe he gave the poison to someone else and let them do his dirt work?"

Eric cracked his knuckles and smirked. "Let's make the guy talk."

Sarge bottles some of the poisoned water then searched the scene with his magnifying glass, before heading to the holy district, carrying the corpse over his shoulder.

Eric looked around and scanned the area for anything out of the ordinary.

Sarge bottled himself some Poisoned Water (Causes poisoned by 1 to the target; consumable), then he and Eric searched the surroundings. There were many broken branches and rummaged shrubbery as well as footsteps that could have been anyones, but there was also traces of something slithering in the mud, like a large snake. They couldn't follow the traces far, though, as they lacked skills in doing so.

The night fell upon them as they arrived to the Temple of Danab. The sisters were just pouring out of the temple, after a long session in the Conclave. Horrified gasps and screams ran through the crowd as Sarge carried Elessa's corpse to the front doors. Revered Aunt Verdra came out to see what the commotion was about, followed by her competitors Ovelia and Ulrica.

Sarge placed the body on the ground with care, then cleared his throat. "We found her at Danab's fountain in the bog, looking for some shut-eye. The fountain was poisoned, and her throat Slit. We found marks on the ground and broken branches. A snake or something. We ain't sure but we had sold some venom we found to a Venomari priest earlier, we have some of the poisoned water here as well. If this is golden Scorp venom it was probably the Venomari."

He stifled a yawn, and looked around at the sisters. "If you lot can stay our weariness, we'll search tonight. Otherwise" he yawned fully this time "we gotta continue in the morning."

"The Venomari... This would be the perfect time for them to strike." Verdra took the Poisoned Water from Sarge. "We shall look into this, so you go get your rest. Thank you for bringing Elessa back to us. The Sisters owe you."

As the crowd dispersed, Ovelia approached the heroes.

heroicaquest130-auntovelia.jpg

"You have done good, but now I worry about Periwinkle even more. That dumb girl has gotten herself lost in the big city, it seems. You haven't happened to see her, have you? I already asked the others earlier..."

Sarge, weary eyed, turns to Eric and hands him his magic compass

"Look for Peri, get a hand from Boomingham. Or get some shut-eye"

Slightly slumped, he shuffled to the sanctuary glad to have gotten rid of the burden of the girl's body.

Boomingham nods. "Righto. I'll be back in the evening for my shift. May try to grab some shut eye before then." Boomingham meanders off to chat with Rex. "Go find somewhere to relax for a few hours. Meet me back here in the evening, but stay a few paces away - we've just got one more fox in the henhouse to catch."

Boomingham waits until the evening and then returns to his post. He hides around a corner for most of it, reading his new book about gold making and copying down some of his favorite passages into his own tome. So enraptured, he totally misses Sarge and Eric when they roll through and sell some poison to the priest. Once evening has fallen Boomingham returns to the front of the Palace, still posing as the Crimson Bear.

Like the others said, Azure Eagle Knight returned to his post in the evening. He gave Boomingham an unhappy smile as he walked to him. Something seemed to bother him.

heroicaquest130-azureeagleknight.jpg

"Good evening to you, Bear. How was your day? Listen, I talked to Baboon and Wolf just now, and it looks like we might have to lose hope in getting our brother Scorpion back into our ranks. My sister can make it look like an accident... What do you think?"

Sarge nodded at the priest, slightly unsure of what to say. Then shrugged at the beggar "Friend of mine should have somethin nice for ya lad." Probably. His pegleg clinked on the hard ground as he strutted up to the statue of the angel Ophaniel, and tried to discern if it was armour or just a statue, he gave a quick glance at the food hungrily to find out if it would give him any benefits.

He allowed his eyes to wander, and they fell first on the dwarf, no interest. And secondly on the green women. "Tell me love, you know anything 'bout the venomari?"

Realising he would feel alot better after a night's rest, he hastily yanked his bedroll off of his back and shook it onto the ground, but waited for the woman's response before he drifted off.

Ooc: I'll break until the rest of the party has caught up with Sarge's rest. Prevent any space-time conundrums :poke:

Boomingham really wishes he could drink a nostrum to calm his nerves, but he can't lift the visor or he'd blow his whole deal. He glances over at Rex, to ensure the Paragon was indeed hovering in the wings if things got dicey. Everything up to this point had been a gamble, but now it was a gamble with some other lives in the balance.

"I think it would be best if we strike tonight. I was in the slums earlier and was accosted myself. That idiot may already be blabbing. How swiftly could you order a strike? If you slip off now, I could defend the palace alone for a short while. Not like anyone ever comes here anyway."

Eric used a Mead and Smelling Salts to prepare him for what might eventually come.

The Circle of Tempestas is one of the few global Circles of Magi, dedicated to keeping track of the weather and holding extreme weather phenomena at bay.
