Actually, the financial report says that they're taking a step backwards to classic sets, and the survey they recently took pointed out that most people want more classic sets as well, so I wouldn't be surprised if that IS what we're getting. ;)

What page of the report was that on lad?

This computer doesn't have Acrobat (recently pimped it out with a new HDD, but have to redownload everything), but I remember something in there about returning to their roots. The survey, which you can check out at www.lugnet.com (it's closed, but replies at lugnet are being counted as well), has basically everyone rooting for less juniorization and more original LEGO.

Lego should drop the political correctness thing and just go with a Military Theme targeted at boys.

One of the best things about Lego is that it's stayed away from War and Military (with some historic exceptions). Sure I like tanks, forts, and soldiers, but Lego has always been above this- may be their philosophy. Kids are exposed to enough violence and war and now that I'm older and wiser, I'd like to see less of it (esp in toys).

So things like GI Joe and toy soldiers are taboo? I'm all for a LEGO military theme, but no nationalities - just generic weaponry/vehicles.

And the soldiers in the Pirate theme weren't militant?

but there's a difference between pirates, GI joes,... and a real military theme about Germans fighting Allies... i don't ever want to see a set with two minifigs and an installation for chemical warfare, like nerve gas.

As I mentioned in another thread the Pirate theme is corny, cliched and stereotyped removing it from historical seriousness. I think that's what I liked most about the LEGO themes of the 80's to mid 90's.

that is exactly why a real military theme wouldn't work. you can't "attach" a WWI or WWII theme from its historical relevance...

Give it a couple of hundred years... No doubt the colonisation of the Caribbean was taken very seriously closer to when it happened and nobody dared make it corny, cliched and stereotyped removing it from historical seriousness

A while back on a different site (maybe Brickset), I remember reading some reviews about the last space shuttle set. It has an American flag on it and a few individuals took issue to the fact that the flag was American even though it was a NASA shuttle. Although I personally wouldn't have an issue with what nationality a set is associated with, it brought up a point that it may be better for Lego to stay away from nationality (like you've indicated), and stay with universal themes.

I've always like GI Joe, army men, and the like, but when a global company like Lego starts building war sets that even resemble modern-day armies (in color, style, etc), it will stir up issues with certain people/nationalities.

Secondly, I think of Lego as a company that has (or at least had) some traditional values that made them successful (these are pretty neat to read if you never have (like don't worry about how many you sell but by focussing on a quality product, the sales will come)). I like to know that there are companies that still have some of these values and qualities (although Lego has really changed over the past 10 years).

Mega Blocks builds some neat army sets, tanks, bridges, etc. They do not identify nationality (or at least I don't think but not positive because I've never purchased one). But if I want army men and GI Joe, I'd go other routes; but Lego's mission has been about creating imagination in children. I hate to see this mission/value changed to include creating modern-day armies and wars.

It's just my opinion, but I wouldn't want to see Lego making GI Joe, tanks, and armies. The new dinosaur theme is bad enough.

I think that a tank, a bomber, a fighter, a base, and a jeep wouldn't be too bad. Once you start getting into things like turrets and anti-aircraft guns, that's a bit too far, but the basics would be pretty good.

It should release more Imperial Guards and Imperial Armada mini-figures.

I liked these sets. I only have the re-release of the Armada Flagship (6291), but I'd love to see the Imperial Trading Post and some of these classic pirate sets re-released. This was a great theme that I always regreted not collecting.
