I am considering getting a screen recorder for recording the screen while programming Mindstorms, WeDo and also MIT Scratch robotic software for purpose of adding videos to my Robotics for Children blog. Need to capture the active window only. Haven't use Mindstorms yet (going to buy soon) but I know that for WeDo, once the program is opened, it occupies the whole screen. The screen recorder would need to be able to capture that. Need recommendations from you guys.

BTW I will be going for the Google Top Contributors Summit, Silicon Valley, in October. If by chance any of you are also going, would be nice to meetup.

Planning to buy Lego Education Mindstorms EV3 then. Is there anything else that I would need to buy, for example, like the WeDo Resource Set.

Open Broadcaster Software is free and works good.

I installed Open Broadcaster. Initial impression is it is hard to use plus had to download Microsoft

DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer

which seemed to take long time to download and probably took up lots of space?

Any comments?

How does it work out for you? Did you set video source?

If you are on a Mac I recommend the built in quicktime screenrecorder if not you could also try one of the many online ones or another download is bandicam

oh and I forgot about the built in windows one the "windows media encoder"

Out of interest, I installed it just the on my Win8.1 x64 machine, and it didn't ask for any other downloads.. and only consumed 15meg of space

Seems to work very well.. lots of settings to fiddle with.. but I was easily able to record just a 'section' of my screen, and save to video file.

Nice find.. I work in schools, and this will come in handy.. I've used Debut video capture in the past, but it's a bit clunky, and always nags you to buy their other software!

I agree with the Open Broadcaster Software. It works very nice, has a lot of options and is still quite user-friendly and easy to use.

Not cheap, but really does the job. I have used Screenflow for many tutorials. You can create a video to show directly or upload to YouTube. This is a very mature, feature rich program.

Because this program has many features it may require more time to learn how to use effectively.

I believe you can download a trial, also not sure if there is a Windows version.

That's the thing, couldn't figure out how to set the video source.

I tried Bandicam and the moment you open the software, an adjustable window opens which would be the capture area, very intuitive.
