Due to my 5 year old son, I am getting some interest in actionfigures and was wondering if the different lines, Hero Factory, Chima figures, Bionicle are compatible with each other ?

Absolutely.

Yes. They're all built from the same building system, the CCBS (Creature and Character Building System), which can be combined and reused to create any characters your son (or yourself) can imagine. The more you have, the more you can design!

oh yes, absolutely. the pieces from those lines are perfectly compatible with each other. don't worry about that. :) (BTW< when you say bionicle, did you mean the 2001 version, the 2015 version, or both?)

the 2015 version use the exact same building system with hero factory and chima ultrabuild, so you should have no problem with that. the 2001 version use slightly different system that still compatible with the new version, but might cause some confusion with new players. but since the 2001 version is old and hard to find, and you're new in this system, i assume that you will definitely gets the 2015 ones, which means this shouldn't be a problem to you. :)

Yes, they are. So their piece will be perfectly compatible too. :)

Yes. It's quite likely that this will remain the basis of LEGO's constructible action figure (constraction) sets for a long, long time, in fact, considering how modular and easy to expand they've tried to make the system.

Pretty much every constraction set since the start of 2011 uses the same building system, so all those sets will all be fully compatible. Pre-2011 BIONICLE and Hero Factory sets don't use quite the same building system, so they are slightly less compatible.

Knights' Kingdom II and Galidor sets are not very compatible with these themes at all. Knights Kingdom II sets are generally compatible with regular LEGO System and LEGO Technic bricks, though, and their joint pieces are used extensively in other themes.

Galidor. Unless you're an extremely experienced creative moc-ist, it's best to avoid that theme.

I don't see how they're so incompatible. With the exception of certain add-on pieces, both themes use Technic tubular-pin connections. Sure, employing their pieces on a CCBS torso might be tricky, but should be a cinch in regards to a custom torso (though I doubt that a five year-old will be making those.)

The connection points are compatible in terms of being based on Technic pins, but my point was that other than the click-joints used in some 2002 and 2003 titans, there are not any BIONICLE parts that will work ideally with those figures' parts. For instance, using Galidor limbs on a BIONICLE torso is generally a lot less practical than using G2 BIONICLE limbs on a G2 torso, because there's nothing to allow the limbs to "click" into a fixed pose like they would on the original figure.

The CCBS was designed to work with all the present constraction sets. Some pieces that are more specialized won't work all that well but there are only few of them, the toa's masks being the worst example. They can be attached on other thing than just their heads but the connection is not all that secure.

But I wouldn't worry too much. We are talking like something of how well Friends pieces are compatible with Ninjago.
