SweetiePie88 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 i think i may have a winner for unpopular opinions: i think the lego movie is nothing short of being an overhyped piece of junk. I saw the movie one day after it premiered in theaters and i'm still regretting it. It was like they spent 75% of the budget on animation, 24% on the real scenes(by real, i mean made of physical bricks), and 1% on developing a script. Overall, it was like it was designed for 5 year olds even though i'm pretty sure that i've heard of lego fans in their 60's and 70's existing. I was entertained for maybe 10 minutes, it was right up until wyldstyle was introduced for the first them when she was digging around in the site. By the time they had arrived at the Lord business place as a big group(it was w/ metal beard), i was ready to leave but the only thing stopping me is that my mother was still watching the movie and i didn't want to just go sit around in the lobby. By the time the "hey lets use a plot twist that belongs in the 90's" plot twist that this was all a story made up by an 8 year old was revealed, i was questioning why i'm a lego fan. Oh, FTW on why id still a lego fan, its due to major reasons. First off, its due to the fact that w/o the stress relieve from the lego building/sorting i am doing, i don't think i could survive the continuing nightmare of the dental journey i made the mistake of doing last year. Second off, they have the minecraft license and i have falling in love w/ it. In the world of minecraft, there's no right or wrong. the closest ive come to watching the movie since then is when i had caught it available to dvr when the HB channels were doing a free channel trial. it was during a time frame when i was lacking stuff on the DVR to watch since i tend to pause shows that are currently playing for a while to build up a leeway to skip commercials. The lacking factor was an all to common result of me going overboard cleaning out the dvr of stuff i thought i didn't want to watch again. Well, fast forward about 4 days w/o me watching the movie and i built up more stuff on the DVR to watching. Still had no desire to watch the movie so out it went since dvr space is already snug at times.
Legocity2713 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I actually love the Spider-Man figure Lego produces. Everyone hates it because it is the same one multiple times. I say we need more…
Dannylonglegs Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 There aren't enough grey pieces in sets. Themes are too violent. Space Police 3 and Atlantis were good themes, but the unique alien head thing got old real fast. Everything in the late 90s through 2001 was perfect. Bionicle got bad after Bohrok, and while Metru was good, it never recovered from the Maori suit. Insectoids was a flawless theme. ~Insectoid Aristocrat
shaggysanchez Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 It doesn't bother me that the majority of the DC sets come with a Batman minifig. I also am not bothered that they have made a theme for the modular buildings. The fact that there was a theme or story behind it didn't take away the enjoyment of building it. Speaking of modulars it doesn't upset me that the last two buildings were smaller for two reasons. A. Not all building are the same size so it adds some variety to them when all together. B. The decrease in exterior size has more than been made up for with interior detail which I am alright with. Its not like they decreased the size and gave us a empty box like cafe corner.
Legocity2713 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Theres another thing. I hate the Cafe Corner and the other hotel modular. Why does everyone like them?
MAB Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 The there's this one: Where, with the last family shot, it looks like they got that whole building out of one bucket. There are two buckets in shot. i think i may have a winner for unpopular opinions: i think the lego movie is nothing short of being an overhyped piece of junk. I also thought it was rubbish. Theres another thing. I hate the Cafe Corner and the other hotel modular. Why does everyone like them? Becuase you can sell them to other people for lots of money.
Robianco Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 I think Bionicle and Hero Factory look rubbish. I also think they have stupid names for each of the characters. Mixels also look like an afterthought of a project from leftover pieces.

Except for Mixels, the balljoints are useful and Mixels are a great way of getting them somewhat cheaply besides Bricklink or Bricks and pieces. Because you can sell them to other people for lots of money. Well there is that. But others like them solely for the buildings which I can't get through my brain at all. Jreacher Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 I wish Lego would just stick to the classic themes, such as Castle, Pirates, City, Space. I think Lego has too many themes going on, they should stick to the classics and make them awesome! I wish the new Pirates ships where like the classic ships! -I hate that the new Pirates ships dont use strings, I dislike their small and printed sails. -I think the new ship is to small I wish Lego would make more castle sets and higher quality. Why cant there be UCS and Modular castle sets!!! I wish Star Wars would just die!! Its been out since what 1999? its a decades old theme, and now all they are doing is making expanded universe vehicles and constant re-makes of vehicle they already have.. I mean how many dang different x-wings do you need? not to mention the several AT-ATs. They need to cut star wars and focus on other things. Thats is all. Oh yes.. I also agree that the Lego Movie sets should be scrapped.
Bigger Fish Posted May 15, 2015 Author Posted May 15, 2015 LEGO needs to focus on their own IP when it comes to video games.
Legogal Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 This thread, is hurting my head. It needs to go to bed.....
Robert8 Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 (edited) Knights' Kingdom II was a good Castle theme Edited May 15, 2015 by Robert8
alanyuppie Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 "Toy of the century??" gimme a break. I wept for Lincoln Logs.
Dohed44 Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 I don't care if LEGO ever develops anything new or creative ever again, as long as they bring back LEGO Universe. HA!
fred67 Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 There are two buckets in shot. Ah... you're right, one is hiding behind the couch. That's still a lot more than two buckets worth. A LOT more. I'm reminded of the movie "Elf" where "Buddy" builds a replica of New York out of the parts from LEGO sets in the store's toy section. You couldn't have built what he built (given the colors, especially) with an entire LEGO Store, let alone with what some department store would have had.

You are calling for classic lines to be the only ones made and that a core licensed theme be dropped as it has been out too long. If all they did was castles (or castle, pirates, city, space), then there would be continuous rehashes of those sets and the themes would be out too long. How many castles do you need? You also need to remember that new children are born each day.

Legocity2713 Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 I never liked the fact that Lego doesn't want us to refer to the bricks as Legos. (I know the reasoning why), but I must be one of the only fans to still call them Legos. Anyone else?
mandylions Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 My police force and fire department can never be too large. The continuation of the Star Wars theme is boring and there are way too many sets available in that theme. The Grand Emporium is an unattractive building. It's easier to use "the extra s" around non-fans. I really dug the decorative base plates of my youth. Building something on a raised base plate would be really nostalgic and nice. There aren't nearly enough female figures, populating my modular town has been a really obnoxious experience. (So many men that I've just turned it into a post apocalyptic experience with dinosaurs ravaging the streets. The women were smart, they got out of there.)

No. I don't get all obsessive when talking to non-LEGO fans, but I cringe when supposed LEGO enthusiasts use "legos," and I think it's an abomination when a journalist writing about LEGO uses the phrase "legos." Interesting points - I don't think they're necessarily "unpopular" positions to have, though. FWIW, I think there's far too few fire department sets relative to police. To complete a LEGO city, we need more emergency personnel, like Ambulances and drivers and so forth, too. I like the Grand Emporium. I had a good time building it with my kids, it was a good "family build" set. I don't use the extra "s" around non-fans, but I don't get all nerdy about it when they do (as above). I agree - I'd like better balance between men and women, but then I'm an adult and not a boy ages 7 to 12. Here's another one from me (venting is cathartic, isn't it?): I hate the term AFOL (even though I use it around AFOLs because they know what it is). I prefer ALE.
Legocity2713 Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 (edited) I prefer ALE. Well, that just became a thing. I love that term. Also, I love more police and fire sets. Each wave still feels fresh to me. Edited May 16, 2015 by Legocity2713
Gnac Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 I hate the term AFOL I like it when Twee Affect uses "AHOL". (That blag needs to update more often)

I feel like on other forums they're unpopular opinions that I never share for fear of my e-life. ;) Because I grew up in a lego-loving family with firefighters, I saw more of those sets than the police ones, now I feel like I see more police sets. And yet I still want a nice big police precinct as one of the next modulars released. I refuse to self-identify as an AFOL, even though I'm in my early 30s. Maybe it's just because I'm a teacher, but I have a hard time with a lot of AFOLs who get angry about children being involved in "their hobby". Along the same vein... most of the people I've seen talking negatively about "too many female" minifigures were adult males. So confusing. That's why I'm glad I'm on this forum now!
Sir_Basil_Ashton Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 (edited) LEGO are overpriced. Quality continues to go down while prices continue to go up. LEGO LotR/Hobbit did not do as well as fans think. New waves would have been released if it was a true success. The same 5-10 people here on EB will argue otherwise. The LEGO Dimensions sets with LEGO LotR builds do not count as new LEGO LotR sets. Chima had 137 sets released. LotR had 16 sets released. That sums up the success of LEGO LotR for me. I can't wait until the last LEGO LotR set retires and LotR is taken off S@H. I'm tired of the re-designs in the LEGO SW line every few years and LEGO SW fans that welcome the updates. I hope LEGO never releases a new UCS Cloud City set. LEGO Pirates is the only reason I still buy LEGO. Edited May 16, 2015 by Sir_Basil_Ashton
