I think the Star Wars Planets sets were great, and I wish they'd made more and kept the series alive.

I think there's too much grey in Star Wars.

I think Belville was an interesting line that more could have been done with.

I don't think licensed sets are really any more expensive than comparable non-licensed ones.

I think ultra-rare convention-exclusive minifigures are off-putting.

I think microbuilding is much more impressive than making something massive.

Also some words about how the skill required to make something recognisable in proportion to the amount of pieces swings in the microbuilders' favour.

amen, huge things that look like straight from a computer render just don't do it for me. if more macro models were packed with insane details, then that's a different story, but when it's just blocky shapes clearly made from a computer generated model, i'm not impressed (only jealous of the insane amount of bricks).

I feel like the Lego Movie has done more harm to our hobby than good.

I find the large Lego pop culture mosaics that get the casual crowds attention are rather dull and lacking skill.

Galaxy Squad was one of the best themes in recent years.

I think TLG screwed up the LOTR sets... mostly pretty badly.

I think TLG's profit margins are borderline greedy - several times more than oil companies, yet everyone hates when oil companies make profits.

Along those lines, I think LEGO fans are too defensive of the company, and forget they are a profit driven, capitalistic company whose goal is to make as much money as possible. As a capitalist, I'm OK with that, but it seems like most fans are willfully ignorant of it.

And continuing that thought, I think LEGO is too expensive, so much so that I only buy a small fraction of what I used to buy.

I think TLG lost it's way with architecture, making far too expensive (and big) sets that adults/business types couldn't possibly put on a shelf in their office.

I hate ninjago.

I hate the classic yellow castle.

I'm troubled by turning piracy into something "fun." Pirates were rapists and murderers.

I'll stop there.

LEGO minifigs might be better off armless coz armed minifigs are the bane of LEGO cities , and recently, swamps (where the need for new Police force is needed EVERY FREAKIN YEAR to handle the crime spree)

I said I don't think licensed sets are really any more expensive than comparable non-licensed ones.

:p ;)

I'd like to know your evidence/reasoning. The licensed sets are generally a lot more expensive in my area than non-licensed with similar numbers of parts and minifigs. Star Wars and super hero sets are way more expensive than Friends, City, Chima, of comparable content.

It's an opinion thread. The OP specifically asked for our unpopular opinions, and that's one of mine. There was no indication we'd have to justify or defend them.

That said, I may get around to it, but if I do I'll do it in a more appropriate thread over in the licensed forum, so as not to derail this one.

Since you said "in my area", though, I will note here I'm talking specifically about pricing in my own "area" (the US), and not about the bizarre-to-the-point-of-insanity pricing inflicted upon so many other countries and regions.

When this thread first launched, I thought of posing the question: Do you win a prize if your opinion is so unpopular that someone challenges it here despite the premise of the thread? This is a great thread by the way, and I share quite a few of the unpopular opinions

I hate the classic skeleton and Battle Droid minifigures. I think they look terrible and cheap.

I absolutely hate building using 1x1 of pretty much any brick.

Posted (edited)

I really like the use of specially moulded heads for minifigures, I think it gives them more character than just a print on a regular minifig head.

I'm a big fan of specialist moulds when they're used for things like animals (I don't like overly big, unnecessary <insert that tiresome argument> pieces though, particularly big vehicle pieces. But that's not an unpopular opinion is it?)

I like the Green Goblin bigfig.

I don't like instructions where they place just one brick at a time. I want to build, not constantly turn pages. I also don't like sets where the manual is in 2 or 3 separate booklets, I prefer a single large one like they did with the Lonely Mountain and recent UCS sets.

I think Constraction should be accepted and even thanked by the wider LEGO community. I feel like I've been dealt a crushing blow every time I read a post that "insults" the building system. After all, Bionicle, a Constraction line, pretty much saved LEGO from bankruptcy 10 years ago. I don't think we'd be here without it.

I think that's all my unpopular opinions out of my system

I hate the classic yellow castle.

ha, yeah i agree it's bit of dumb color, but i hate the caste wall panel pieces 100x more. at least with the yellow castles you got a decent amount of bricks.

i hate the manufactured rarity of some stuff. if people are paying $3k for a grey market millennium falcon then re-release it! i might pay a few bucks for a rarer fig, but i'll never like SW or Lego enough to drop that much money on a toy that was originally like a 10th of that price.

i hate how so many good sets on ideas gets passed up for yet another licensed set (although i did love the ecto-1)

i also hate the police/bad guy thing, but unless your a 9yo boy i don't think that's an unpopular opinion. it's like the pirate thing though, i mean criminals and cops, talk about murderers and rapist. if you were a little boy who watched your parents brutalized by a cop or a robber, you'd probably not be a big fan of those sets.

i like the friends sets in general, although still hate the figs. at least it brings in some new colors and minifig accessories and has more substance besides cops and robbers.

I hate baseplates and wish they didn't exist. Regular plates can fill the same role.

Considering the trend I have noticed with newer sets not utilising base plates (Ferris Wheel for example) this may become a reality...

I think TLG's profit margins are borderline greedy - several times more than oil companies, yet everyone hates when oil companies make profits.

Along those lines, I think LEGO fans are too defensive of the company, and forget they are a profit driven, capitalistic company whose goal is to make as much money as possible.

I also have to question the logic of price increases in the past year. 2013 prices were higher than 'normal' and the first half of 2014 seemed to adjust to more moderate prices but after the summer started climbing again. There is no doubt that the profit motive is here and pushing prices higher. It is frustrating as many of the larger sets I want are inflated because I live in Canada. (199.99 US vs 229.99 CDN for the Ferris wheel)

I think Lego should redefine themselves as a broader company other than catering to children. So many adults buy Lego now it is hard to call oneself a 'children's toy' company. Lego has become more of a cultural phenomenon with generations growing up with their products.

I don't like the new star wars blasters, I prefer the realistic ones. Expressions on mini-figures are cool but I actually prefer the classic smiley face. There is something fun and disturbing about having a :classic: smiley going into battle with swords and shields/blasters.

Stickers are terrible and cheapen the Lego brand.

No, this thread is for the unpopular opinions, not the ones held by nearly everyone here. ;)

Stickers are terrible and cheapen the Lego brand.

Well I guess here is my unpopular opinion then:

I like stickers*, a lot. More than most printed pieces, in fact.

(The exception is if a particular piece will always be useful with that particular image that is printed, i.e. control panels and such. For everything else I prefer stickers in order to save them to customize something else later on.)

*meaning waterslide decals. Opaque printed stickers are terrible and do cheapen the brand.

+1 but in really pricey ucs set like tumbler or star wars.

Some of the sets targeted at AFOLS are really boring (tumbler, helicarrier, town hall, pet shop, ferris wheel)

I was a big fan of legend beasts and the Chima CCBS figures. I preferred Chima CCBS to the new Bionicle.

Oh and all those conflict sets....can't we just go back to having one good set in a box like classic space? And definitely with alternative builds on the back!
