Here's a couple shots of my baggage cars and observation car I built for my Emerald Night. I am particular fond of the 24 stud "shorty" baggage car at the head of the train. As you can see the doors on the baggage cars do open but with some difficulty.

I like your observation car. It's very presidential. :classic: Those type of hinges are hard to open when the doors are in the middle of the car. They seem to work better when the door is at the end.

Abe has to sit to give his Whistle Stop speechs since his hat is so tall! (Yes, I know he's not the correct President for that event or era). You are correct on the doors. You have to take the roof off and pop them open with your finger since the thickness makes them bind up. But they look nice!

and the best thing is that no expensive #6556 tan windows! The reddish-brown plate hinges are a bit hard to find though.

Yes, that was the reason why I went for brick hinges instead of plate hinges for my build.

The tricky bit is knowing whether Lego will release another set in the future using those Tan Train Window frames………If they do, likely these would be about 50p to buy from Lego directly, however how long do you wait.

I built an extra 3 carriages, and they were not cheap as you say,

Blue 1 x 2 x 3 train windows are also killer expensive when I needed 14 of them.

I have prolonged my cars with 8 studs as well as made a sleeping car. See my Flickr:

Happy building

Nice build!

Hi had anyone built extra carriages for this set. And has it worked out expensive?

I'd like 2 more and searched bricklink but complete carriage to buy is up on €130.

When the Emerald was released, I bought three boxes. Price was 99 euro at that time. I sold two of the loco's for 60 euro each, so the total train (one loco plus 3 wagons) was 180 euro in total. When I look at the prices right now, I'm glad I didn't wait ;-)
