Hi,

I have recently started my 9V train journey after graduating Modular set. This 9v Train...wow...such an amazing theme and i can't stop searching and watching videos related to this hours and hours...every day...Among the great sets of lego 9v trains such as 4558, 4551, the freight train sets are also very interesting and attractive, mainly due to its unique design and cargo wagon, loading various cargos and playability I assume.

So, in my opinion, both 4563 and 4564 are the two best freight trains sets of 90s 9V era.

I wonder which set is your preferred set if you have to choose one set? and what is the reason that you chose that set? Any comments, thoughts about those two set would be appreciate!!

Thank you!

I woul choose 4564, basically gor the variaty of cars (flatbed, box car and hopper). 4563 has two flatbeds and no hopper.

4564 for the hook lift truck.

In my opinion 4564 might be the best 9v era train after the licensed sets.

4564 because the locomotive looks similar to the real MAK1700

Depends on the price. I've had both and 4563 is much cheaper than 4564. Furthermore, I prefer the cars and accessories from the 4563 set.

The 4563 shunter is a bit basic, but fun.

4564 is epic, such great cars and very playable. It would be my choice if only 1 could be picked.

However 4563 is Epic and basically along with Metroliner, the start of 9v trains. There should in theory be more of these available on the second hand market, and at a better price. (which Bricklink confirms). For any collector, the start of a theme is linked to these 2 trains. (and maybe the Crocodile engine)

4564 offers more playability and loco is the best european style freight loco TLG has made to date.

I own 4563 and love it, but always wanted 4564 too.

I own both but 4563 will always be special because it was my first ever lego train.

Looking at the wagons, I find 4563 has the better selection; the barrels are great accessories, the tractor is a nice bonus vehicle, and you even get a fork lift truck which is much cooler than the annoying rubber-band lifter truck that comes with 4564. I do like 4564's big yellow engine, but it's just the same as 4565's and 4512's engine when you line them all up together. In contrast, 4563 is the only little shunter in the 9V range, and it's a lovely, quick little loco that looks good in front of every wagon.

4563, its a more 'logical' set. The hopper of the other one just doesnt look normal. And a forklift looks better then a truck. And also, the yellow loco would never be used for this type of things. A small shunter like the one in 4563 would be choosen for a short freight train. Explained in one sentence: 4563 is more realistic.

Definitely 4564.

  1. The loc has 8 wheels. 4563 loc has just 4.
  2. Big fan of the red hopper.

LOL it is almost exactly the same. Earlier today I was wondering where Lego got their inspiration from for this loc. Now I know.

I prefer 4563- I like the small red loco. It's a pity we don't get small locos any more. I also like the wagons.

Holy thread revival, Batman!
