Bob De Quatre Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 Yesterday I did some renders with both BR and POVRay, and I'll keep the BR ones I really like that this program is simple but yet produce quality pictures. The discussions on the previous pages make me worried that the software loose its simplicity. Anyway, what I'd like is a simple settings page that'd let you change little things like resolution or background color. Quote

Anyway, what I'd like is a simple settings page that'd let you change little things like resolution or background color. Exactly, I wanted to say it earlier that to me BR renders seem much more realistic than POV-Ray ones (OK, this may be highly individual but to me it just seem like that...I too switch to BR from POV-Ray mainly for its quick results...or at least being in the process of switching waiting for 2 or 3 things to be added for complete switch to BR). Do not be afraid of loosing sw's simplicity: that discussion is basically just about core details that any LEGO renderer should have, no new strange funcy stuff there As for your suggestions: yea, that would be nice, I was just yesterday thinking about asking @msx80 if he could make new tab where all these settings would be placed/moved (those 2 check fields of "rewriting" and "wireframing"), you know like what you say (width, height, anti aliasing) + user definable patch to .lif and LDRAW dir (haha in case he would be so kind and add LDRAW support to as it should be just about making importer, but most needed stuff first: lights transformed to camera position, logo-on-stud, brick seams ) Edited June 19, 2015 by bublible Quote
anothergol Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 I like this tool, it's lighting fast. Would be nice to use it for what would be impossible with other renderers: animation. A simple option to make a 360 rotation anim around X axis. That would take a lifetime in POVRay. Aside from the wrong transparency (very opaque & dark, this is supposed to be trans neon green), it's good. Quote

Thanks :) It will remain simple, in that it will always have all settings set to a default value that works for most cases, and people have just to hit Render. Everything else is for people who wants to dig in :) As for your suggestions: yea, that would be nice, I was just yesterday thinking about asking @msx80 if he could make new tab where all these settings would be placed/moved (those 2 check fields of "rewriting" and "wireframing"), you know like what you say (width, height, anti aliasing) + user definable patch to .lif and LDRAW dir (haha in case he would be so kind and add LDRAW support to as it should be just about making importer, but most needed stuff first: lights transformed to camera position, logo-on-stud, brick seams ) I may put some basic settings on their own tab. Will look into it. Lif path is already definible but only in the program settings file in C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\bluerender.ini I like this tool, it's lighting fast. Actually the idea of making an animation is pretty cool, and not very heavy on development side. Might look into it! It would be cool to output a gif of the rotating model :) Quote

Thanks! and what a great model, i like it, very original! Yea, I like his model too - very good work , BUT as for its originality...hm, I don't know, to me - and I thought to everyone with a modest CS knowledge - it should be immediately clear that it is actually a modern variant of classic space set #6882-1. Will look into it. Lif path is already definible but only in the program settings file in C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\bluerender.ini Why don't you put it directly to BR folder instead? Just asking cos finding that file in that particular direction is once again pain for average PC user whereas if it would be placed in BR folder they would find it immediatellylike for 99% of cases I guess. Actually the idea of making an animation is pretty cool, and not very heavy on development side. Might look into it! It would be cool to output a gif of the rotating model :) OK, that'd be super, BUT, please, if you can, add those essential stuff first, could you, please? I like this tool, it's lighting fast. aeralure Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 (edited) Anyone have any ideas as to why Bluerender doesn't launch for me? It shows a window quick like it's going to open, and then it quits itself. I'm on a Mac with Java Version 8 Update 45 using Bluerender 004. I'd really like to try this as an alternative to LDD-->Bricksmith-->LDView-->POVRay. That method works for me on a test, but the last two builds only around half the parts survived the export from LDD to an .ldr file intact, and it's too much work to rebuild everything in Bricksmith. Anyone have any ideas on this issue? Seems however I'm not alone as some others are reporting some issues with Bluerender 004 a few posts up. Anyone have a link to Bluerender 003? Alskadosis Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 Uhm what does the command window says? is there any kind of message? It simply doesn't open anything. I'll double click Bluerender in the folder and nothing happens, no matter how long I wait. Quote
___ Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 (edited) @msx80 How it is going, any news of actual development of things? BTW: with no other quick and easy option on the table at the moment having such an eminent need for it inside a BR LEGO community it could be quite fine having at least new check field in the BR GUI named "experimental simple pseudo-seams" for cases where pure "individual brick shrinking to its center by specified amount...like 0.006 for example" could be sufficient as a technique and it would not be any hard stuff to do for you (no fancy coding, just pure changing of brick dimension during initial loading of brick data) so whoever would try it and found it useful with his model could have seams while others would still need for complete solution to this + you/we all could still thinking furthermore about some other normal or better solution to the problem (as edge beveling would probably add more problems tho it would be the appropriate solution in this case with SunFlow way of code work), what do you think? msx80 Posted June 22, 2015 Author Posted June 22, 2015 @aeralure it doesn't work on mac right now. Since it looks like there's a lot of demand i may ask some friend if they can let me use their mac.. @Alskadosis @bublible i have no news at the moment. I think i'll work on finding better materials settings (such as chrome and transparent parts) and possibly that animation idea, when i'll find some more free time. I'm not implementing the shrinking becouse the shrinking doesn't work if not for builds made only of regular old bricks, and possibly not even for those. First off the center is not the same for all bricks, so the shrinking will shrink by different amount for the two axis, generating irregular and terribly looking gaps: Secondly, it doesn't work for concave bricks, where it actually pull internal vertices outward instead of inward To make it works you should implement all sort of tricks that i'm not willing to face, and are possibly beyond my skills. msx80 Posted June 22, 2015 Author Posted June 22, 2015 no i forgot to fill it :) i don't know what could be the problem.. if it worked with 0003 it should work with 0004. i can only suggest the standard things: have you unzipped the zip correctly? do you have java8.40 or better? do you have some strange setup to report (network disk or other stuff)? Quote
Alskadosis Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Well, I'm pretty sure I unzipped it correctly, and I believe I have a Java above the minimum. It appears that, when I open the file, it doesn't respond in any shape or form to me opening it, it just goes on time like nothing happened. Should I try re-downloading it? Quote
Calabar Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 (edited) I'm not implementing the shrinking because... It is a pity that bluerender cannot show separation of bricks in any way, I think it is a lack that easily catches the eye. I agree that brick shrinking is far from perfection and can introduces artefacts, but sometimes it could work and it should be easy to add as an optional "experimental" feature, with a little disclaimer that it could not work properly. For example my main aim is to use bluerender to create images of lego mosaics, where the separation of the bricks is very important to produce a somewhat realistic effect. There the brick shrinking would work, as in a mosaic all the bricks are common bricks. In brief, if you have not some better idea, it could be better than nothing! BTW as of today I got a news that I probably found out another possible solution to the seams problem inspired by someonelses "edge shader" (or how it was named) BUT in my case it has nothing to do with shading (ehm, not in that kind of sense) and is even easier to do than shrinking, Calabar. Unfortunatelly I am not able testing it as BR does not support brick referencing so I could apply it to individual brick... And also for some reason I cannot test it even with textured diffuse/shinny shader as textures do not work anywhere except uber and glass shaders... Edited June 22, 2015 by bublible Quote
Bob De Quatre Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 If we could set outline options (width, color and transparency), maybe it could be used as brick separation. Quote
___ Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 (edited) If we could set outline options (width, color and transparency), maybe it could be used as brick separation. Yea, in fact what I did was kind of the same except it is not done programatically rather "hard way" via applied not-deformable (this needs to be implemented) transparent .png texture consisting basically of right amount of inner shadowing on its borders...easy as that which is still better than nothing Such texture would be applied on all brick faces (5 faces on normal basic brick 2x4)...and this should be possible out of the box (ehm, OK, maybe not on all 5 faces unless @msx80 make apropriate update of the code but at least basic shader with texture could work, just like I did it with transparent glass shader with applied texture, that kind of thing) Edited June 22, 2015 by bublible Quote
