simonjedi Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 (edited) I thought the episode was really good other than the rushed ending. The banter between Rory and the Doctor was great. Next weeks looks interesting. Edit: Didn't like the Edward Cullen reject either. Edited May 8, 2010 by simonjedi Quote
Sandy Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 Loved Helen McCrory's outfit in this latest episode, at least. The rest of it was quite conventional Doctor Who fare, entertaining but nothing special in itself. Based on the previous "alienification" of folklore monsters like werewolves in older episodes, I knew from the get-go that the "vampires" would turn out to be yet another alien race taking refuge on Earth. The next episode certainly looks different and very creepy, but like always, it's best to wait next week before making a judgment. Quote
CheeseyWob Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 I hate how in a show about time travel, the main character gets annoyed when the last member of a species dies. He can go back a decade and see millions of them. Total goof-up. Quote

He can go back a decade and see millions of them. Total goof-up. And if he goes forward, there will be none. It's not a goof-up, it's the Doctor's character. Anyway, one of the less good episodes of the series so far tonight. Still enjoyable, particularly Rory and the cake moment, but the effects when he was climbing the tower were kind of embarassing. Next episode looks amazing. But so did Victory of the Daleks and that was a little bit of a letdown.... - Tilius Quote

Batbrick Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 Ugh. Can this please, please, please be the last time there's uniting through RTD-hating? He deserves "so! much! more!" in my view. As a relatively differently opinionated person on the whole RTD era, I'll list some of the highs for me. The episodes per series I'd recommend people to see, if they'd want to watch just the highlights. I understand what you mean, and certainly agree, I even said in this thread the man would deserve his own church dedicated to him if he wasn't atheist. And he has a grasp on pacing much better than almost any writer I can think of barring the disjointed End of Time. He just has major flaws in his writing that became more obvious the more he wrote because they kept repeating, much in the same way anyone can predict the plucky side character will die in a Joss Whedon flick at this point. And the last twenty minutes... Wow. What would you want to do when you know you're almost out of time? Visit all the people you love one last time. The Doctor asking whether Joan had been happy after he hurt her. Devastating. What he did to give Donna a wedding gift. Visiting Rose one last time. The Ood music. It's the perfect ending to the RTD / Tennant era, to me. See this was my problem with this scene, he probably got around an hour so, probably even more to look up on all his companions, waiting for Rose, tracking Martha and Mickey, buying a ticket to celebrate Donna's wedding etcetera. The whole way through the story he'd been angsting over regenerating, and then he has this much time and doesn't even think to heal himself. He's got a load of time to go to any point in space and time, any piece of technology to flush that pesky radiation out and he doesn't even try. Struck me as really odd. Anyway, quite enjoyed Vampires in Venice, though there were some plot elements that were a little holey. I love that so far this season though even the weaker episodes are still really fun and have a great creepy undertone. Rory was fantastic too, I hope he sticks around for the rest of the season. Next week's looks flippin' great though, I have a pet theory on what will happen that I refuse to share. Time Lord Batbrick Away! Quote
simonjedi Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 (edited) So what did everyone think of 'Amy's Choice'? I have a pet theory on what will happen that I refuse to share. so was your theory right? Edited May 15, 2010 by simonjedi Quote
Lord Arjay Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 I thought it was a good episode. You could tell that the pregnant Amy reality was false from the begining but the revelation of both realitys being false was interesting. The dream lord was very an intresting concept and I hope he returns eventually. What did everyone else think? Not looking forward to next week though. Quote
simonjedi Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 (edited) "There's only one person in the world that hates me as much as you do." Was a very good episode, like Lord_Arjay said it was a very interesting twist. There was very good banter between the 3, and Matt Smith is a brilliant doctor. The elderly abuse in this episode was hilarious. Reminded me of Hot Fuzz. Edited May 15, 2010 by simonjedi Quote
hewkii9 Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 I think Amy's Choice was a fairly solid episode, had some very good ideas in it, but fell flat in places [like the old woman Rory pushed off the roof ]. I really liked that this was the closest we'll get to a TARDIS episode, and it looked great frozen. Although, just from my perspective, a cold star is less impossible than some other things we've gotten. Also, Dream Lord - new series look at the Valeyard? Quote
Sandy Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Also, Dream Lord - new series look at the Valeyard? You didn't watch the end of the episode? The Dream Lord was the Doctor's subconscious , not anything else. I really liked this episode a lot, it was different, and it deepened the relationship between the three main characters a whole lot. I also like it when an episode manages to "dupe" me. When the Dream Lord went "You were right, I have been defeated", I was like "Do they really have to underline it so?", but then it was revealed that they were dreaming the whole time. The cause of the hallucinations was quite pointless (sparkly specks, really?), but all in all the concept of the plot was really great. Next week were back to one of those "creepy rural England episodes" that we've seen in every season, it seems. Let's just see what kind of aliens lurk in the English countryside this time. Quote
Batbrick Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 so was your theory right? That both realities were dreams akaLotus Eating Machines? Yep, I've seen too many Twilight Zone and Outer Limits episodes to be fooled by that ploy. But it did fool me for a second when I faltered on whether the Cold Star reality really was real. So what did everyone think of 'Amy's Choice'? Bloody Fantastic. Despite the fact that I predicted it it was still highly enjoyable. I'm so glad Amy and Rory are going to be together still, I couldn't stand it if she kept going for the Doctor. Speaking of Rory I'm really enjoying as a character, and its awesome to finally, finally have more than one companion on the TARDIS again, hope he sticks around for quite a while. Plus the additional mystery of who the Dream Lord was made up for how I predicted the other one, and it was a very good satisfactory answer. In fact, the episode becomes even more brilliant on second viewing when the significance of the Doctor and Dreamlord's interactions are much more apparent. Also, I adore surrealistic horror or just surreal stories and atmosphere, one of the reasons I love the Library two-parter, and this had it in spades. Seeing more of the TARDIS was awesome, and the cold thing was great, fantastic imagery. The offputting nature of evil geriatrics and the violence to them was equally hilarious and unsettling. And Toby Jones' performance I was really looking forward to as entertaining, but he delivered much more on a different level, he was a very creepy villain here, one of the best in NewWho I'd even say. That said, the revelation of there not being a real, physical villain ups my respect for the story too, I love it when Who can be creepy and exciting without always having an evil alien monster. Batbrick Away! Quote

Let's just see what kind of aliens lurk in the English countryside this time. England?! Unless the little boy is in a similar situation to Amelia Pond, I do believe it is set in Wales. He didn't sound very Northern (which is where the not Welsh coal fields are to be found) and that seemed to be a lot of mine workings and suchlike. In fact I'd hazard a guess it was filmed not too far down the road from me, or possibly further up the vallies. Quote

Well excuse me for not being able to discern different dialects of English from each other in a minute-long trailer. Anyway, I know it's not accurate, but the country's usually just called "England" where I'm from, no matter what part of the Great Britain is talked about. Quote
Professor Flitwick Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 I unfortunetly missed this episode. Sod's law, it turns out it was quite good! Quote
sok117 Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Well, I just finished watching the 2nd part of the episode with the weeping angels. It was a bit hard to follow as I am a fairly new fan, but I have seen another episode with them. I didn't get how shooting that orb made them go on the ceiling, someone will need to explain that to me. But I did like the ending. That was very cool to watch. Anyone mind telling me how many episodes I am behind on? Quote

The orb was kept afloat by some form of gravity manipulation that was then reapplied to either the ship's hull or the Doctor and co. they then floated/fell/jumped to the newly aligned "down". You are missing two episodes if you go by the UK airdates, or you have caught up if you are going by US ones. Quote

Eskallon Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Amy's Choice was good, although I was a little sceptical at first. I thought they were all gonna choose which one they wanted: Rory: Countryside Doctor: Tardis Amy: Choice Well I got it wrong, never mind, it was still a good episode. Quote

def Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 I really liked the episode, the atmosphere was great. The tweeting leading to each nod off was a brilliant hook to tie the episode around. Great season so far, making me start to appreciate Dr. Who on a level I hadn't before. Thank you Internet! Quote
simonjedi Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 I've been rewatched some episode at random and i've come to this conclusion: Journey's end is the worst doctor who episode of the revival. 'Evidence' * Only Clone10 and Donna actually do anything. Rose and 10 spend most of the episode in 'suspension' Martha does threaten to blow up the earth but is teleported to the Dalek ship. Mickey, Jack Sarah and Jackie threaten to blow the Dalek death star up with a warp star necklace thing but they get teleported to Davros. * The way they defeated the Daleks - here is a summery. DoctorDonna *Technobabble* [she flicks a switch] [Daleks do ballet] THEN all the companions start pushing the daleks down corridors and RTD shits all over any dalek character development . * 10 moans at clone10 for destroying the daleks even though this is a huge dalek fleet and even without the reality bomb they can take over the galaxy (he even says that in the episode) THEN HE TRIES TO SAVE DAVROS?! * The horribly cheesy lets all drag the earth home while listening to MURRRAAAAYYY GOOLLD (i like the idea of 6 people required to fly a tardis though) *Bad wolf bay the second visit. bits i did like: Davros/Dalek Cann. Donna fate. The fires of Pompeii is an excellent episode however and features Karen Gillian (who is turning to stone in this episode, which is what 'happens' to her in Time of Angels.). Quote
