After I posted my Slave vs Slave thread, I started thinking. I own the 7676 Gunship of 2008 and the 8129 AT-AT of 2010.

Are the new versions released in 2013 (Gunship 75021) and 2014 (AT-AT 75054) significantly better?

75021-1.jpg_________________75054-1.jpg

I mean are they different enough in terms of building technique or features or fidelity to the "real" ships that it would be worth spending the extra money on two models that I already own? Using the Slave I as an example, I had the 8097 "toy" version and this year I got the badass 75060. The UCS is in a different league in terms of details and fidelity, but I think the 8095 is still quite nice to have because it's (roughly) up to scale to other regular SW ships like the X-Wing or Falcon and it is swooshable. With that, in my mind I have two versions of the same ship but they are kind of complementary in my collection.

Another example: I have (had) Luke's Landspeeder (8092) of 2010 and was very happy with it. But then I got the Mos Eilsey Cantina set (75052) from last year and the landspeeder that came with that set was quite better then the older one, to the point that now the 8092 set has become spare parts. So what about the Gunship and AT-AT? Are they a lot better then the older versions or just slightly better? If I get the new models will I be tempted to transform the older ones into spare parts because they've become totally outclassed? Or are they different enough to the point that it would be cool to have both in the collection? I'm a die-hard SW fan, and I do like both vehicles a LOT, but there are many other SW sets that I don't have any versions of that could be money better spent, since after all I do have (good) versions of these two.

What do you think? I would be specially interested to hear the opinion of those who have both versions of these sets.

I don't think you should get the AT-AT before you get the sets you don't have any version of (it doesn't seem to be a very pig update from the 2010 one).

As for the Gunship, well, it's an amazing update from the old one (the design is much cleaner and it's a beauty to display next to other Episode II sets. Plus, it's more of a "ground version" (side turrets / doors don't close all the way)) and I think you should definitely get it. If you want, you could modify the new Gunship with some parts of the older one to get the doors to close completely and have a hybrid terrain-space Gunship.

These are great improvements over its predessesor's, both by look and playability. Here are some major differences between the two models that I look at. The new AT-AT looks way better compared to the old one, more sturdy, and the troop hatch operates better compared to the old one. The gunship offers a better shape, as well as different play features (side turrets, loss of the secendary doors, no bacta), but comes with a handle!

Of course the new ones will be better in some if not all areas. If you have the money, I would recomend getting them. I don't think the new ones could replace the old ones for spare parts, because they still stack up well to the new ones, plus allows your army to grow. IF NOT, Save it for a set you don't have, and maybe update your ships, since you have 75% of the pieces already there.

I don't have the new Gunship, but I updated mine to be similar to the new one, keeping some of the features of the old one, while giving me the option to revert between Clone Wars style and Standard.

the new gunship blows away its predecessors, as for the AT At... well it is a tad little and more "compact" i still think the motorized is the better one, but the one you have is the close second

The Gunship is awesome, but good luck trying to find one at retail price. Since it's retirement, it's been hard to find other than eBay.

Hi

the old Gunship is a TCW set with TCW faces, so a no go dor me. The new one is a mobie set with mobie faces :)

Dino

I enjoy my gunship and the AT-ATs are great.

if you can find the gunship it's totally worth it. I would have bought more than one but we all know what target Canada was like, I was lucky to find the one I have. the AT-AT is a steal if you can find it on sale (I own 4) decent amount of figures and the large empty interior isn't bad if you want to make it your own or make variations. both are fun builds in their own way and in my opinion you won't be disappointed

Hmm...

So the first one to get would be the Gunship?

The new AT-AT looks way better compared to the old one, more sturdy, and the troop hatch operates better compared to the old one. The gunship offers a better shape, as well as different play features (side turrets, loss of the secendary doors, no bacta), but comes with a handle!

The troop doors on my AT-AT would the only issue I have with it. I think they're poorly implemented and are a pain to use. From reviews that I saw of the new model, they now work on pistons, so that's a huge improvement. And about the Gunship, you list features that I really like. Well, with the exception of loosing the nose art.

What are "mobie faces"?

Your first sentence is what so far has stopped me from getting these newer models. I really like both the AT and the Gunship, but it's hard to rationalize having a second version of both while I don't have some other sets :sceptic: . And your last argument on the Gunship has convinced me on getting the new one. It definitively looks like as being more oriented to be a ground-attack or troop support craft, while the older one would be just a plain troop carrier. In my mind that would make it "different enough" to become a justifiable purchase.

I have the 8129, 10178 and 75054. The 75054 is the most accurate and beautiful AT-AT. But I really like the 10178 the most, my son's also do

I have both versions of the RGS and the AT-AT that you have mentioned. If you have the first of each, and money is tight, and still have other models to get, I'd give them a pass as you are not really missing out too much. The 7676 version I actually really like, and despite the missing gun pods on the sides, prefer it. The handle is useful, but it removes the upper storage area, and also lacks the little speeder from in the rear, the bacta tank, and the rear hinge flap at the back above the rear central ball turret.

The new AT-AT is an improvement, and had I not had the previous version, would happily get the new version and not be bothered not having the 2008 version. However, It does come with a fair amount of snow troopers, the new AT-AT pilot, and is generally a more solid build. (I'm sure you are familiar with the parts under the belly for the legs that keep popping off).

If you can afford it and won't have to miss out anything new because of it, I'd recommend getting another AT-AT at least. As for the RGS, if you really like the 7676 because of all its 'features' you may feel *ever so slightly* underwhelmed at the slightly fewer play functions, but only just, and it does help by having the side gun pods... But... it would be another RGS to add to and one can never have enough republic gunships!

The republic gunship and at at are among my favorite vehicles, I have both of the new ones and the gunship is simply amazing and the at at is also, they are both very fun to build, and display. I have no regrets buying either.

Well, with all your input, I bumped the new Gunship into the "Buy ASAP" list (that's only one down from the "Must Buy"), while the 75054 AT was promoted from the "Not Necessary" list to the "Buy If Possible" list .

Darn, and that's with a new Falcon coming out... :look:
