Rey seems to be using a custom torso build, too bad the legs absolutely suck. On Phasma they didn't even try to make her feminine, there is not a single thing differen't from the stormie :/

Finn and Rey seem to have non-CCBS torsos. The use of Technic on constraction next year is interesting, as it feels much more integrated and appealing than..whatever the tried to do with Brain Attack (yeah, I'll never stop bashing 2013).

And do I see some...gears?

Told you guys this would happen. Rey will be having her mask.

-50 Reliability.

Just kidding.

I dig them. Love the new cloak pieces and gear functions. The head sculpts are awkward as expected, but they could've been worse.

Other than her majestic black and red cloak you mean.

The head molds look excellent. Finn's looks a bit off, but I'm pretty sure it will look better in the final set (versus a render with exaggerated highlights). I'm glad Rey's face is showing. It'd be more useful to me if she didn't have her mask, but at least the designers didn't assume a female character wouldn't sell unless her face was hidden, which was a very real concern of mine.

Note: the characters without shooting weapons all appear to have gearboxes!

Lots of nice recolors too. Other than the somewhat knobbly knees of the hero characters (which make me wish a 7M shell existed), I'm extremely impressed with this wave!

Which is a good thing, considering that there are no differences (especially not gender-based differences in the movie, either. :hmpf:

Also, it seems like every time we get pics of these sorts of sets, I'm immediately impressed by the human head sculpts, only to find that the public opinion is the opposite. I've got to wonder what kinds of faces people EXPECT these sets to have, or indeed whether they've ever bought non-Lego action figures (and I'm not talking über-realistic ones from companies like Hot Toys). A certain amount of lifelessness comes with the territory, but I think most of the heads we've gotten for these work in spite of that.

Finn's head looks absolutely terrible, but Poe and Rey don't look too bad.

Still, I'm definitely getting Kylo and Phasma, but that's probably it. Maybe the FO Stormie if I have spare cash.

Loving all the new capes - it seems Kylo has a normal cape and an waist cape! And Rey has some funky torso cape going on around her body. Very nice.

I have just one emote to describe these:

Honestly, I wasn't expecting to see official images of these anytime soon, so this is a welcome surprise. So much fabric goodness, more than just capes too, it's just too bad Kylo Ren doesn't have a fabric hood. Black SW shoulder add-ons, I can see myself using a ton of these. Even the headsculpts are pretty decent. The only problem I have with these is Finn. Don't know what it is, maybe it's the way he's posed, maybe it's the fault of his custom torso build, but his neck connection looks so awkward and weird looking. Makes it look like he has a really long neck *huh* As long as he's in the cheapest price bracket, he will be a better set than Luke, if only for all the delightful dark tan and brown

I spy bad rendering on Kylo Ren though - look at his lightsaber-wielding arm

And Phasma is just boring flat silver, right? That picture makes her look like she's entirely chrome silver, but I know such a set wouldn't really be feasible :look:

In conclusion - I think I'm going to need 2 of each of these, and 3, maybe even 4 of that FO Stormtrooper. One Stormie just isn't enough

Yeah, Phasma looks no different from a regular First Order Stormtrooper outside of her armor being polished silver. That's a design change I really like, as you don't need bikini armor on every single female character, but that's a discussion for a later time. I am also really glad they are making so many neutral colored CCBS pieces now, and have made quite a few good design choices such as Poe's Technic-built flight harness and the apparent use of 2015 gearboxes.

Anyone notice that Rey, Finn and Kylo have visible gears on their backs? Coupled with the seemingly custom torsos that Finn and Rey look to have, could it be that these figures have some gear feature?

Posted

Meh. Can't say I'm very impressed.

Though they seem to have creative builds and functions. I can't tell what's going on with Finn's torso construction.

I like the recolors (oh the glorious orange and tan and the black and silver shoulder armor), but not much else. The head sculpts are creepy, the builds are unimpressive compared to last year's (even though I don't like Vader's build much, it's still somewhat more imposing looking than these, and I'm sure we can all agree that Grievous is simply the best) and the blasters look weirdly like the kind found with the kind of cheap stuff you get at a dollar store, The crossbar piece for the lightsaber looks nice though. Can definitely see that one being useful.

Not too happy with the 2016 Star Wars ultrabuild sets. The villains like the FO Stormtrooper and Kylo are excellent, but the head mold on Poe and Finn is not very well designed. I'm also don't like those technic parts that sticking out on Poe's body. I know it suppose to represent Poe's flight jacket, but the execution........Not so good I think.

Wait, does Finn have light grey (rather than bley) upper leg bones? I mean, it's probably just a trick of the light, but they do seem to be quite a bit lighter than the Stormtrooper's. Plus, he seems to have lower limbs in dark brown, which could be very useful for MOCcing.

I know Kylo has been seen without his hood in some of the trailers, but I must say he really needs the hood, that Helmet just looks so strange without it. (And I'm not rustling the toy for that, I think it looks weird without the hood in the trailers too)

Rey has a decent face and Poes is hidden enough, but Finns just really doesn't do it for me. Not as bad as Luke because at least he has more color to his outfit, but just that actors face in general is difficult to translate to a toy of this level, certainly not going to get Hot Toys quality here.

With that said, with a head sculpt, even if it's the best Lego could have done, I can still hate it.

Okay, I think that there is a new piece used on Finn. This piece should cover up his back, allowing the torso to be based entirely around the gearbox and leave only the gear sticking out of the back. This piece extends over the shoulders a bit to help cover them up and also contains the ball joint that the head attached to. This same piece can be used in Rey and Kylo.
