I just watched Jurassic World yesterday (great movie by the way, highly recommended) and I noticed that many of the scenes depicted in the film's licensed LEGO sets didn't appear in the film. The Dilophosaurus Ambush and T-Rex Tracker are the most notable examples (the T-Rex is in the movie, but I won't go into any further details). That got me thinking about how LEGO often drops the ball on sets based on upcoming movies, whether because they want to sell something that appeals better to kids or because they haven't actually seen the movie yet.

The Iron Man 3 sets are probably the most egregious examples of this trend; according to the "Ultimate Showdown" set, the movie climaxes with Iron Man fighting a guerrilla-vested Mandarin in a Zamboni with flamethrowers. Extremis Sea Port Battle managed to not resemble anything from the movie and still spoil Killian's role as an Extremis-addled villain.

Can you think of any other licensed sets that weren't accurate to their source material?

My vote goes to the Mandarin set from Iron Man 3. That is so hilariously off :D

How about The Hobbit "Battle of Five Armies." It looks nothing like Dale, and instead of soldiers to represent the armies it has only named characters (except the orcs). Plus of course an extraneous orc siege weapon.

Snip-y

Hands down the concept art mandarin flamethrower golf cart. I don't think it should count though seeing how badass it is

Besides that if I had to think, maybe the turtle van set and the POTC fountain of youth/final battle.

Couldn't disagree more, the buildings look exactly like Dale with broken down stuff and the beige colour sceme, Lego did Named Characters on purpose...

Toy Story 3 Pizza Planet Truck?

May have been based on Toy Story 2 but I'm not sure

Don't forget that Lego have insight into these films a lounge time before actual release. They can end up designing a set, signing it off, then having the film changed, leaving them with an unrelated set.

Granted sets like the Iron Man 3 may have had creative licensed used instead, Lego probably heard that people wanted a War Machine figure, so they offered it. Iron Patriot then turned up as a giveaway with the game. The final scene in Iron Man 3 could never be recreated as a set, so the one we got in the end is a good enough payoff, especially with the unique Heartbreaker suit

They could've just had a few small cranes, a cargo box, and maybe a forklift as a set. Then 2-3 iron men and some extremis soldiers with maybe even an extremis Pepper. Would've been fine

As Fetzer said, a lot of the toy designs will be based on concept art, and pre screens of an uncut movie. A lot can change between point A and point B that we do not see.

The LEGO game makes references to elements of the movie that were not IN the movie, yet they have the voices, so it looks like it was filmed, just not added to the cut. The other option is that they just changed elements in the film to suit themselves, again possible, but the costs to get people to voice additional lines might be a bit extreme!

Alas, if only we'd seen Ben Kingsley in a flamethrower golf cart in the movie... But you're right; as far as I can remember, when Lego makes sets for movies that have been out a while (like LOTR or POTC 1-3) the sets turn out a lot more accurate than the current movie.

As far as least accurate, some of the very old Harry Potter sets were a bit wonky. Odd colors and things that weren't even in the movie...

It's not a great, or even good set by any stretch of the imagination, but it hardly is the worst Hobbit or LotR offender. That would have to go to the Mirkwood Elf Army. That set was a completely made up set, and to make it worse most of the minifigures in it weren't good. Gundabad Orcs without hair or armor, Mirkwood Elves with hoods instead of armor, etc. It could have been awesome if they had gave us some armored elves and based it on the water gates or something. It would have fit perfectly from the movie AND gave us useful figs.

Mandarin's golf cart has to take the lead, but Metropolis Showdown wasn't very accurate either. Sure, Superman and Zod fought, but not with the builds LEGO included. The main build should have been a LexCorp. truck, as seen in the film.

Captain America's Avenging Cycle was never in the movie if I remember correctly. Iron Man vs. Ultron was also horribly inaccurate.

MEA wasn't accurate and could have been replaced with a better set, but it isn't a horrible set.

Now, Umbaran MHC... that was inaccurate and horrible! Worst set I'd ever bought and its inaccuracy in order to sell the thing didn't help!

Captain America's Avenging Cycle is odd, but nothing can ever top inaccuracy that is Iron Man vs. Mandarin. There's been a few sets over the years that have had odd minifig choices, such as Iron Man in the S.H.I.E.L.D. Truck from Avengers.

Something else to consider is that Lego need to spread out figures in waves. Sometimes creating a set that doesn't feature in the film at all is a way to do this. Everyone loves Cap, so they give him you in a cheap (£12) set that also comes with chitauri foot soldiers to build your army. Same goes for Iron Man vs. Ultron, it technically does feature in the film, the background of the box resembles the city they fight in, Iron Man does fight the Ultron Drones and it has the correct suit, the MK45. Yeah the flying craft doesn't feature, but Lego need to have an actual build element to it. Could they of built the control panel for the Vibranium gravity lift? Sure they could of, but thistle craft gives more swooshability probably. And once again, 3 Ultron drones per set will quickly build you a formidable army for your Avengers to fight against, and whose going to complain about some extra Iron Man figures?

The Lone Ranger sets were really good, but most of them aren't even based off of scenes in the film. The Lone Ranger never raids a cavalry camp or stops a stagecoach robbery, and the silver mine looks almost completely different from how it does on screen. Great movie, great sets, but they don't fit well together.

I think the big problem I have is that its the final wave, its in a set with the words BATTLE and ARMIES and it has no troops except orcs. Similar to how you want armored elfs from Mirkwood Elf Army but to me worse since its THE set about the final battle. Its true that a random wall is even less relevant though.

They're slowly but surely getting there, what with Mk 33 Silver Centurion coming later this year as yet another game pre-order bonus.

I would kill for a set that had a bunch of Iron Man figs in it based on all of his suits.

I agree and would say the Bo5A set is the second worst from the line. I feel like Lego was fine with representations from each faction such as Thorin and Dain for the dwarves and Legolas for the elves so they didn't feel the need to include soldiers. This really disappointed a lot of fans though. No dwarf or elf soldiers and the orcs we did get weren't even the properly armored versions. The Dale ruins were passable at best. The bolt thrower was a complete waste of pieces for something not even featured in the film. The set was just a mess all around.

Well, after seeing Jurassic World...75916 Dilophosaurus Ambush definitely doesn't fit. It would fit more with Park, as there was an actual ambush-of sorts-in the first. Also, 75918 T-Rex Tracker...no. That huge vehicle, generic vet with torch. Obviously the torch is replacing the flare used to lure the T Rex.

But, as said above, TLG needs to spread things out. Got Gray in one, the T Rex in the other...so, yeah.

Gonna revive this thread, this topic has always been so interesting to me! Any other examples? I mean, the Ant-Man set wasn't so accurate (but for very understandable reasons and I love the creative liberty taken to make it LEGO related), and of course TFA Kylo Ren Shuttle is a major example of this.

I'm curious to hear more Star Wars examples.

Almost all the Harry Potter sets qualify to be in this list

Like this one: The "Chamber of Secrets"

Or Snape with a glow in the dark head

Chamber of Secrets looks good to me? It has the giant underground hallway, the mouth opens with the Basilisk. It's got the Sword of Gryffindor and Lockhart laying down.

Yeah, the HP sets are pretty accurate considering they were also made in 2002-2003...
