"...Jinnipher. I agree, we have to save Faust. But you're in denial if you think Vorpalis isn't the one telling the true story."

"Save Faust for what purpose, Gabriel? Ya've been goin' on about startin' to feel normal and actually bein' affected by the things around ya. Ya can look at me straight and tell me ya'll blindly and unfeelingly still follow this man after all he's apparently done? If'n yer waitin' fer a chance to show yer humanity, than now would be it."

"I got hired for a job. I like to keep my contracts. You won't always make friends, but people have to admit you always keep your word." That, and the pay's nice. Letters of Rec. are hard to come by.

"Not to disparage your words, but I really don't think Vorpalis is the sort to really feel like having a heart-to-heart. He's too hel-set on revenge for that..."

"Sod ya are, Flisperer. That renowned thief ya tracked down, did ya do it out of duty or did ya feel the fellow was wrong? Those star lizards ya keep goin' on about, duty or somethin' more? Contracts with a devil deserve no respect and will bring only ill upon the one who blindly accepts them."

Jinnipher looked at Skrall incredulously. "We've been over this before, ogre. Revenge?! One deceitful king doesn't warrant the destruction of an entire country! Faust can be dealt with after this. But this dragon is as good as dead."

"Destruction of an entire country? Ya see what ya want to see, no one has been oppressed undeservedly. I'll admit we've seen horror and we've seen destruction, but the fault lies upon Faust for bringing it upon his own kingdom not upon Vorpalis. Ya wish to make amends and to right the wrongs, then humble yerself and admit yer fault."

"I've seen enough to know that this could get a lot worse. That creepy demi-being could show up again." Karie replies.

"And where will ya stand, Karie? Ya've been in Heroica long enough to know that we are not always privy to all the necessary details, ya know we've been wrong before. Can ya honestly side with Faust, contract or not?"

8a1lPNl.png

"You will have to forgive me for jumping to conclusions - you murdered two of my associates and impersonated them to infiltrate the city. And it appears that some of your compatriots have already drawn their swords..."

"An understandable reaction and were the truth plainly known, they would be here today standing by your side. As for my companions... they may not yet comprehend their error, but I ask for yer patience, we are too often people of war and not consideration."

The dragon's voice softens.

"I loved Mercution, you must understand. It was home. And Faust's recklessness and greed only cemented its fall from grace. Moone is really all that remains of its culture. And it pained me to see Faust taint it. But you are correct. When Faust's rule is fully wiped away - I know there is a few stragglers that will still cling to him, despite the disgrace he is, and my work here is not yet done. Mermont is done with Faust. But the other towns, spreading the news may incite rebellion. Some towns laid low if only because they thought Mermont would drive me out and slaughter me. The news of Faust's confession may only incite more rebellion, panic, and crime, a tragic fact of conquest. Faust's reign is over, and his supporters in Mermont are nearly gone. But there is other factors that need to be dealt with. But, yes - Moone will have to rebuild. And when all is said and done, I will ensure that that is the case."

If you truly wish to cooperate, drop your weapons, I will detain you, and I will send you back to Eubric on the next boat."

"Sounds like a noble place yer goin' for and ya'll do me the favor of allowin' me to continue here, if ya'd have me. As grim as it may seem, with the loss of Bulk and Melody, sounds like ya could use some replacements. As for my companions, if ya kill them, it will only inspire more to come, even with Faust's death. You will not win in the end via blood shed, it is hearts that must be changed and eyes that must be opened." Skrall slowly lowered the hammer and then unsheated his great-blade placing it on the ground, while continuing to loosen the rest of his equipment waiting for responses.

"Whose to say I'll retain even a percent of what the fog has done as soon as I step out? If I break contract, my career is over. Nobody hires a hitman that bails out on the job. If I do that, I lose my humanity and my job, and the latter was all I had before this mission. At least if we complete this and I do revert back to what I was, I still have my reputation to fall back on.

I lived in Moone for four months before Vorpalis came. And it wasn't too bad. He's a liar, he's a deciever. But Moone was... functional. More so than Eubric."

Perhaps even that scientist who designed that mist machine I destroyed.. That is fact I will not hide from you.

You mistake me for a republican or monarch. I am a dictator and conqueror by trade, hunter. And although th end result is worth it, the road of a conqueror is paved with blood. Blood I do not always relish spilling, but blood nonetheless.

"Do you know who goes about parading their power, Skrall? Tyrants. And Vorpalis is one of them if he's going to show off his power by executing someone in a public place. Why? Because he is in a position to abuse said power." Karie retorts. "You're siding with someone who instead of going about this in a peaceful manner has executed and destroyed villages that oppose him. You saw the destruction at the harbour, and you want to tell me that the dragon is right? For terrorizing and murdering people? Do you not see the problem of a Vorpalis controlling this area?"

"That is correct. I have my regrets. But this conquest is not among them.

Skrall. If the party decides to fight, I expect you to stand with them. A leader must never abandon their people, no matter the circumstance. That.... And it would be an honor to fight one such as yourself."

I had expected to have the honor of facing a gentlemanly, dashing master rogue...and I found a quivering, cowardly little thing of a were-creature, that would sell out his honor for a few more miserable months of life.

As for the star-lizards...sometimes a threat must be eliminated, before it can come into existed. It's bloody, dark, horrific work...but it prevents even more horror.

Faust isn't a good person...but he isn't a devil. I made no contracts with a devil when I signed on. I signed on to retrieve a person's property. As for what happens after that...I am uncertain how to proceed."

"What he said. Lies aren't good. But functional is better than destruction. It's like with the Houses. They're corrupt, but they're less corrupt than if the Wolfgang took over.

Faust is a lying traitor that stole a throne and made a comfortable world for his people. Vorpalis is a hero that was betrayed and took out his vengeance upon the country he formerly protected. Both of them are messed up. But Faust at least had a functional country."

Tyrants and dictators are the worst sorts of people for a nation. I will not aid the creation of one through idly standing by."

Father Steve sadly shook his head. "No, Jinnipher...Heroes are people that stand up for what they believe in. We do work that we're paid for.

We're mercs. We're all mercs..."

His voice trailed off as he remembered similar emotions that an respected brief acquaintance had expressed...

"Then I have misjudged ya and sadly so. For if ya can not see that such action will only lead to the final destruction of yer beloved country than ya are no more fit to rule it than Faust." "And ya would protect that property even when gained in such a despicable manner?"
"...All I know is that the only ways all of this could end well, would require both sides being willing to talk this out peacefully and come to an agreement. And they won't, and aren't. And that I won't let a self-professed dictator begin his rule. Dictators only bring pain, never peace."

Seeing that the Steel Knife had bounced off Vorpalis's chest unnoticed and not wanting to loose it, Father Steve subtly picked it up and returned it to his pocket.

"Then I have misjudged ya and sadly so. For if ya can not see that such action will only lead to the final destruction of yer beloved country than ya are no more fit to rule it than Faust." The closed his eyes for a brief moment and breathed a long sigh before stooping and rearming himself. "I will let you have Faust for he is yours by right, but I grant ya no more than that Vorpalis. Remain here for anything else and we shall kill you."

Father Steve pulled Warlen close beside him and shoved Jinnipher in front of the two of them, to hide their conversation. He whispered furiously. "Warlen, you have to cast Sleep on Aeolus, now. Jinnipher, here's a Fire Bomb - use it to distract Vorpalis somehow, while I'm getting Faust out of here, or else your king is going to die. Warlen, I'm going to get up on that stage. While I do so, cast Darkness around me, like we did earlier with the corpses. Only this time, cast it until I'm off of the stage. Karie, I'm going to need you on the other side of that stage, to support me when I jump off it with Faust. He's too heavy to carry alone. Or Gabriel. Someone. And if this isn't a good plan, then tell me a better one. Because I'm not seeing it."

"Dictators are the bastion of change, heroes. The only ones who can get anything significant done. Some of the greatest leaders and the most horrible monsteres were dictators. In my thousands of years, I have been both - but as I have said before, I regret nothing of this conquest."

7YdqKPh.png

"The road to Hel is paved with good intentions, Vorpalis."

8a1lPNl.png

"So it is, Sandman - Gabriel. So it is."

Vorpalis stares piercingly at Gabriel.

8a1lPNl.png

"There is something discordant in your heart and mind, sniper, and much of it seems to be centered around the Moon Elf at your side."

7YdqKPh.png

"...What are you saying?"

8a1lPNl.png

"You make an observation, and so can I - although I normally don't wax philosophical like this. It's rather... dross.

But enough prattle!"

Vorpalis throws back his head and lets out a deafening, earth quaking howl, his guards beginning their charge, the crowd descending even further into confusion...

QM Note: I'm updating from mobile right now, so only expect some dialogue snippets for the next few hours. By tonight, though, battle time!

"Yes. I like that plan.

Just so long as "get given our Letters of Rec." is between "stopping Vorpalis" and "deal with Faust".

People who've been "dealt with" tend to leave rather nasty comments on their reviews."

Warlen gazed, outraged, at Vorpalis. He opened his mouth to say something, but the others said it all for him. Hastily, he attempted to cast sleep on Aeoleus, before sculling a Mead, Nostrum, Smelling Salts and Hurricane in turn.

Drawing out the pile of robes from the bottom of his pack, he pulled on the robes.*

"Vorpalis!" he yelled, holding up the hand his ring was on. "Do you remember your brother?"

*I should have the robes and ring equipped.

"Yes. I remember him. Do you expect me to be mad? He died how he wanted to, and judging by the ring, he died at your hand.

In fact - I recognize you, Mystic Knight. We've met before, haven't we - before you ever set foot on Moone!

So I beat you, if memory serves, but you killed Lethauros, eh. You gave him the death he wanted - and for that, I thank you. But now I'll return the favor."

OoC: Lind should be *Hastened*, *Lucky*, and have 1/6 Chance of Avoiding Free Hits(Cloak of Deception). Also, Jinnipher has 1 Fire Bomb, Karie has my Grand Potion, and I'm -1 Nostrum, and -1 Smelling Salts, and +2 Fire Bombs.

Guillotine Front

7RnFQOy.png "You'll die TONIGHT, Faust..."

Aeolus, Level 0 Humanoid *Immune to Negative Effects!* *Can only be hit by ranged attacks!*

HP: 1200/1200

Distance To Guillotine: 3

Note: Aeolus is dragging Faust to the guillotine. Every turn Aeolus goes without taking damage, his distance to the guillotine decreases by 1 - if the distance hits 0, Faust is executed and the quest fails. Killing Aeolus saves Faust.

"Aw, NO! You are not killing the guy I'm comprimising my intergrity for a paycheck from!"

Father Steve first targets Aeolus from the back row with his Steel Knife.

If Assasination is rolled, Father Steve then throws his Darker Ethereal Deck towards The Mermont Spearman A.

If Assasination fails, Father Steve targets Aeolus a second time with his Darker Ethereal Deck.

If Damage is rolled, Father Steve uses his second round to target Aeolus with his Steel Knife.

EDIT: Looks good, except that Lind isn't wearing the Medal of Valor, as per the 3 artifact limit for 20-29s rule.

OoC: Skrall should have the Paper Doll instead of the Lucky Doubloon equipped.

"I don't think ya heard clearly, Vorpalis. Ya get Faust and that's it, ya want to stay longer than that, it's yer death warrant yer signin'." Skrall slugs down a Smelling Salt and then fires at Vorpalis from the back row with his Hunter's Crossbow. "Sandman take a shot at the Fanatic from the back row."

Battle Order:

Lind

Karie

Sandman

Warlen

Jennipher

Skrall

"I'm not one to go against the Party Leader, at least not after...I'm trying to make it a rule, is the point.

But you somewhat resigned that position when you surrendered to the enemy.

Gabriel, if I can't assassinate him, target Aeoleus with everything you got until one of us kills him. You're under contract to Faust, not Skrall, and your first duty is to him(Faust). If Faust dies, you and I have no purpose to be here. Warlen, you might crowd control the Citizens with some Darkness, and Jinnipher, you might give that Fanatic a hard time."

"This is not an argument worth having right now.

And your idea of Warlen's crowd control would kill those civillians."

"I can also say pretty much the same thing about your position, Skrall. Time will tell... This, unfortunately, is a scenario where might makes right."

"If we stick to the back, most of us can shrug off the effects of the crowd. If you'd like to have a discussion about party headship, I'll kindly remind ya to remember why yer still here on this mission." Skrall nodded though at Sandman. "Wing Aeoleus if ya can."

QM Note: If someone could put in an action for Warlen I can get this rolling.

If Assassination and Sniping fails, Warlen targets Aeolus with a Darkness spell twice, If Assassination or Sniping was a success, Warlen targets the Mermont Mage. If the first spell KO's the Mage, he targets the Mermont Swordsman with a Darkness spell, if not, he targets the Mage a second time.
