"We'll be heading down to the galley, once your make-up wearing comrade puts the mirror down." remarks the captin with a chuckle.

"Wonderful, some of that gin would be appreciated."

Jinnipher accepted the blade with slight surprise. Maybe Skrall wasn't so bad after all. Or maybe he was just trying to pacify her.

Nonetheless, she hefted the sword high and took a few clumsy practice swings. It was much heavier than her usual longsword, and harder to swing with one hand. The barnacles suckling on the metal didn't help with the weight, either. She scraped what she could off blade on the deck railing.

"It'll do for now," she replied simply.

"Good. Now how long have you been in Moone? Your expertise and knowledge of the surrounding country will be critical I believe to the success of this mission."

"Not long," she admitted. "I left maybe half of a century ago after I realized this wasn't the place for me. I haven't been back since. But it is home. You'd better believe you're going to need me."

"Pfft. That's the most backwards logic I've heard in awhile. I was born in the Hovels. Do you think I want to go back there because that's where I was born? Is that a place to call "home"? If Moone isn't the place for you, then it's definitely not your home." Karie replies.

"Just because I have better things to do than sit around and wait to be eaten by a dragon doesn't mean I can't call this place home. I was born and raised here, and the Moon Elves are still my people no matter how many differences I have with them. Try not to envy the fact that I have a home to return to, and those thieves and beggars in the Hovels couldn't care less about you. Maybe if you just gave them your share of the gold from this quest, then you could go back to where you belong. That is, if you survive here."

"Home is where the heart is. If Moone wasn't for you, it probably wasn't where your heart was.

That being said, could we please eat? Because I am really looking forward to trying out this barnacle..."

"Oh, then I'm certain you know all about me." Karie replies, acting smug and mischievous. "Trust me, being little miss Lone Wolf is only going to isolate you from others. Seems to be a commonality between elves- er, no offence, Warlen. You seem pretty cool. Oh, and I guess Flynn over here to!" Karie snickers to herself, still finding amusement out of Lind's botched elf disguise.

"...Home is a pointless concept. You are where you are, and you obtain the necessities. You can exist in one place for a long period of time, but there's little reason to get the idea that that location is your one true home. You can live virtually anywhere else."

ixvKNNds.png

"Now that we've all chipped in, let's head down to the galley to eat."

The party heads below deck to the galley, and meet the chef. Flynn presents the barnacle to the chef...

v8a6OjR.png

"I... Uh. Huh. I can do... something with this."

As he finishes up the swordfish, Chef Perdue presents Flynn with...

Barnacle Broth: Delicious and nutritious! Restores 20 HP and 20 Ether.

The party sits and eats...

----------------------------------------------

A day passes, and morning turns to night. The Excelsus soon has Moone in their sights.

5xk21wk.png

Er9SFkx.png

"I'll be damned... It really is covered in fog..."

ixvKNNds.png

"And more importantly - for the Excelsus, at least - looks like the dragon turned your docks to Driftwood."

Er9SFkx.png

"We got a small rowboat in the hold. We'll get as close as we can and row you over."

The party soon finds themselves crammed on a small boat, rowing towards the fog-cloaked Moone. The normally crystalline water was drenched a morbid black by the vorpal fog. They row through the shattered remains of the docks, jagged wood and stone supports bobbing pitifully in the sea. Before long, they reach shore...

Er9SFkx.png

"...Good luck. Armstrong and I will be remaining offshore, so Vorpalis doesn't get any bright ideas and sink us. When we see the fog start to dissapate... We'll be right here to pick you up, aye? 'Til then, best of luck."

The party steps off the small boat, and after a short walk, find themselves in the the center of what used to be a marketplace...

km1RGt6.png

The dark fog made it hard to breathe, each breath strained and scratchy... before them, in the center of the ruins, was a statue of King Faust with its head lopped off. The surrounding area was faring just as well, if not worse. Market stands, businesses, houses, all of them were crushed and obliterated, reduced to nothing but ash and shrapnel.

The party hears a voice crying for help in the North.

Sandman looks up the stars, seems to do some mental math, and speaks.

7YdqKPh.png

"...Our timing was bad. It's nearly midnight, and there is no shelter left here. If we make a run for it now, we'll be able to get to Cenauri and stay safe from the fog. We have to leave those people."

What will the party do?

Lind searched the area, to see if there was anything he could salvage.

"Yeah...No.

I'm not quite a hero, but every now and then, I still try and do something that's vaguely heroic. Leaving people crying out for help...Yeah, not heroic. I'm going to go see what the problem is."

"Yer not going to be able to save any more of 'em if ya get yerself killed Flisperer. We need to make for shelter, I don't like it as much as the next guy, but we need to look at the big picture here. If any of ya got opinions, speak 'em now." Skrall adjusted his equipment, downing a mead and readying himself to make a dash for shelter.

The Munchkin raised his hand to object, but then paused for a moment. "...This dragon does seem to be clever enough to lay a trap, and I promised to follow you by placing my vote in you as our leader...

So...let's all head for shelter. And say a prayer to whatever gods or God we follow for those poor souls..."

"That's assuming Cenauria is still standing. King Faust didn't seem to optimistic about our situation, and he said he has no idea about his kingdom's standings. I don't care what we do, but whatever it is, let's do this quick. I'd prefer not running into a big, ugly dragon. I've probably run into worse things, but a dragon's still pretty high on the list of things I'd prefer not running into."

"The Master Witch raises an excellent point. We have no idea of the condition of Cenauria. We might arrive there and find it torched like this place. However, we do have some idea of the condition of the locals, in that we can hear someone out there, which means something's still walking, in some form or another. And even if what we hear is enemies, or some sort of a trap, it'll give us more knowledge to work with than we currently have - and it's a surer shot of running into some form of life than Cenauria is, even if only by a little bit. Heck, we might even find out about shelter we didn't already know about, if we investigate the noise."

"Although ou changed your ind to the correct choice, you're very easily dissuaded, Flisperer." notes Sandman.

"I'm not dissuaded from my original opinion. But I promised to follow someone else's judgement as long as they were in the capacity of leader, and I'm trying to keep that promise."

"And let's say it's not trap, and it's just someone who is incapacitated. We help them out, and it's too late for any of else to get to shelter. What then?

Perhaps it goes against your instincts as a hero. I'm making a guess here by saying that, since we can hear the voice from here, they likely aren't in any sort of shelter. So even if we "save" thi person, we're all getting gassed anyway.

Put your bravado aside and think of the most likely option."

Sandman's voice, despite the urgency of the situation and the possible life that hung in the balance, still contained almost no traces of emotion. What was wrong with this man...? Pragmatism is one thing, but the hollowness of this man is another thing entirely...

"Obviously they aren't currently in any sort of shelter, but they may have been accosted, or injured on the way to some shelter - possibly one even closer than Cenauri.

Keep in mind, they are presumably alive. If this fog kills people, that means that they must have had some sort of shelter last night to not be killed. Unless the fog turns people to undead. Or, unless the fog only injuries or disorients people. But still..."

"...And?" Jinnipher raised an eyebrow quizzically.

Skrall hefted his pack and sighing made for the galley. "Criticism has the unique property of being ignorable, Miss. How about we all get some food and hash out our plan for when we reach shore?"

"Thanks for the sage advice, big guy."

Upon hearing the scream in the woods, Jinnipher's ears perked up. She urged to go help what could be one of her kind. "We have to help them! The dragon could be there and this could be our chance to slay him! Let's go!" Jinnipher started towards the sound of the scream.

She paused to snap back at Karie. "Do you mean to say that you're afraid, witch? In case you forgot, the reason why we're here is to kill the dragon, which will require running into it and not away from it."

"I severely hope that that isn't the dragon. Because we are so not ready to face him yet...

If we do go investigate, I should be the one to go in first - I can duck Flee in and out of battle quicker than any of you can, and I can report back to everyone on the situation - if the battle is too tough, it will save us some headaches."

She paused to snap back at Karie. "Do you mean to say that you're afraid, witch? In case you forgot, the reason why we're here is to kill the dragon, which will require running into it and not away from it."

"Yeah...We're supposed to kill that thing at the palace. Which almost certainly has an armory. With weapons stronger than these." Flynn/Lind flapped his cards and pointed at the Moon Elf's sword. Edited by Lind Whisperer

"The dragon, should he follow the pattern he's been following for the past few weeks, will be airborne. And don't ask me to shoot him. There's not enough diazepam in the world to get me to shoot a shot straight up at a fast moving target like that, especially with the fog covering it.

I'd also like to state that Cenauri is on the way to the Cathedral, where Sputnik was seen last. And, according to the King, he'll be neccasary in negating the beast's fog.

Listen to reason. What is the more likely scenario? There is shelter in a place we can see is utterly decimated, or there is shelter in a town that may very well be still standing? And even if Cenauri is razed, we're still closer to our goal. That person's life isn't worth it."

"You're recklessness is going to get you killed quicker than you realize." Karie exclaims, realizing that reason is something Jinnipher probably lacks in favour of impulse.

"Um... yeah, I'm afraid, but unlike you I'm intelligent." She turns to the rest of the group. "Look, if Jinnipeher's not going to back down, I'll go with her while you guys get to Cenauri. As much as I think she's a little twerp, I don't want to see her dead, and I'm powerful enough to ensure she at least doesn't get herself hurt."

Another eyebrow raised at the Sandman. "It's worth it to me. What's the point of killing the dragon if he kills everyone else first?"

"You're recklessness is going to get you killed quicker than you realize." Karie exclaims, realizing that reason is something Jinnipher probably lacks in favour of impulse.

"Little twerp!? Look, sweetie, you're barely a mature adult human and I could take you in a duel any day. So don't kid yourself into thinking you're smarter or stronger than I am. I was the one who protected the whole party from those octopi, so if anything you'll be the one who needs to be careful of getting hurt." There was a trace of exasperation in her voice that indicated that even though she held a grudge against Karie, she was grateful to have someone come with her.

Jinnipher gathered herself by pushing a strand of hair behind her ear in and closing her eyes and sighing. "The rest of you can run for it, but I'm going in there no matter what. Karie, Lind, let's go."
