Tuinman Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 (edited) at 1:15 I think it's the burning hot dog stand from the new Fire Station set (Klaus-Dieter mentions that in his description). So probably there's more to find in the movie... Edited September 23, 2015 by Tuinman Quote

Dannylonglegs Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Oooh! Prison island sounds promising... I'm not typically one to purchase police sets (especially big ones) but it does sound enticing. Anyone know what the primary colours of the set are? I'm sure there's a lot of dark grey from the (brickbuilt! ) rock structure, but is the main facility all-white? Or is there some light grey? Any brick pieces? Also... what colour is that hot air balloon? tan? Dark green? Sand green? I love those pieces! ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote

At this point, Lego City has become so mind-numbingly repetitive, boring, and predictable that it'd be impossible for them NOT to repeat themselves. How many different ways can you make a freaking fire truck? Edited September 23, 2015 by Joebot Quote

When I watched this, I just passed it off as the Ladder Truck from 7208. Now on closer inspection it has a different ladder which is the same as the ladders on the 2013 fire engines. Looks a bit of a hybrid between 7208 & 6002 Edited September 23, 2015 by scottwb2010 Quote
polarscribe Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 (edited) Repetitive and boring? Since when did LEGO Town or City ever have a car ferry? A prison island? An auto dealership? A LEGO Store? A service truck with a Porta-Potty? Highly-detailed buses? A museum? A logging truck? An articulated auto transporter with two full-sized cars? OK, so yeah, there's going to be some perennial repeats in the Fire and Police subthemes (which are perennial repeats because, y'know, people buy them for their kids, because kids are always going to want them, and so they're going to make a ton of money for LEGO) but there's also a ton of innovation going on throughout the lineup. Everything is more detailed and realistic than Town ever was, and keeps getting better. And all of this is with a release schedule far more fast-paced than Town ever had. We are in a golden age of LEGO Town/City-themed sets, quite frankly. I really don't get all the bitching and moaning in this forum. If something comes out that you don't like, just don't buy it. duckpond Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Hi, I am new here but have been watching this thread for quite a while, very keen to see the new releases. Just want to share what I found upon actually visiting the link to this Lego City Studio thing at lego.com/citystudio . In the banner, the third one (scrolled), I think it shows 60128 Police Pursuit car by reading its number plate. I hope it is okay for me to also put the link to that image here: https://citystudio.lego.com/new-assests/main-banner-carousel_state-3_2256x564.jpg Quote
CM4Sci Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Yep! That is not the red car in the set, though, it's more of a pickup. Quote

Of those sets you rattled off, two are from 2016 (car ferry and prison island). And the prison island HAS been done before, although I'll grant you it was a long time ago (6598). That means there is ONE set coming up next year that is something truly new. One. Out of about 20 new City sets. I would personally not describe that product line as "innovative," but whatever. Glad you're enjoying the sets and the designs. That's cool. Where you see "detailed and realistic," I see oversized, out-of-scale, ugly monstrosities that don't fit on my road plates. But I'm old and grew up in a different era of Lego Town, so my tastes are likely quite different. Nobody's "bitching and moaning." People are just expressing their opinions in polite, friendly ways. Some people (like me) are disappointed in the product lineup. Hey, it happens. And so we come here to talk about it. It's a discussion board after all. So, let's discuss things. Quote

Of course, since it's preliminary, they might have just used colors already on hand, and the final version might be different. Quote

Out of about 20 new City sets. Er, no. It hasn't been done before. To say that a one-room shack which is part of a larger set is equivalent to a complete stand-alone flagship set is absurd (and I own 6598). That's two sets from the first wave of 2016 City. Add in "Tire Escape", that's never been done either. We haven't the slightest inkling what else might be coming down the pipe in summer and fall. Remember that LEGO is out to make money; police and fire sets are perennial sellers. 10% of sets being "new" things they haven't tried is actually a pretty good ratio. What if they're terrible sellers, and nobody wants a ferry or a prison island? The other stuff will have to make up the difference, sales-wise. They have to mix risks with proven sellers. What "new" things would you'd like to see in City that have never, ever been done before? And how would they be done in a way that appeals to 5-12 year old kids, the line's core audience? Where you see "detailed and realistic," I see oversized, out-of-scale, ugly monstrosities that don't fit on my road plates. But I'm old and grew up in a different era of Lego Town, so my tastes are likely quite different. I don't think we grew up in different eras; my first LEGO was 6386 Police Command Base. I lament the fact that LEGO hasn't done larger road plates, and I lament the loss of baseplates more generally. But the fact is that the sets are far better scaled and detailed than Town ever was. They're only "oversized" by the undersized standards of O.G. Town. Look at the ambulance from 6380 Emergency Treatment Center vs. the 4431 ambulance and tell me there isn't a vast improvement in design, realism and playability. Joebot Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Er, no. It hasn't been done before. To say that a one-room shack which is part of a larger set is equivalent to a complete stand-alone flagship set is absurd (and I own 6598). I wasn't comparing the new "Prison Island" to 6598. I haven't actually seen the new Prison Island set, so that would be a foolish thing to do. I was just answering your question, "When has Lego ever made a prison island set?" The answer is set 6598. That was my only point. What "new" things would you'd like to see in City that have never, ever been done before? And how would they be done in a way that appeals to 5-12 year old kids, the line's core audience? Oh geez, you can find all kinds of great City wish lists here on EB. Usually right around this time of year, in fact, when people see the actual list of upcoming sets, and are inevitably disappointed. But, off the top of my head, a zoo is the obvious answer. It blows my mind that Lego has never made a mini-figure scale zoo. Anything to do with animals would be successful, I would think, like a vet. How about a whale-watching boat? The Farm sets from a few years back were pretty lackluster. I wouldn't mind seeing TLC take another crack at those. Maybe a Safari theme? Beyond that, I think more things like restaurant and shops. How about a comic book store? TLC could get some more use out of that Marvel/DC license! Or a hobby store, or a candy shop? An arcade? Or maybe kids don't go to arcades anymore. An Apple Store then! 100% agreed on the lack of baseplates!! I can't argue that the newer sets are more realistic. However, I would ask this question: When did "realism" become the goal for Lego sets? If I wanted to build a realistic-looking model City, I'd get into model trains. Lego has its own unique charm and appeal that has nothing to do with being realistic. For example, if we really wanted "realism," then we should be clamoring for a new mini-figure. A mini-fig is laughably unrealistic in its proportions. And yet we love them because they're so wonderfully "Lego." Quote
scottwb2010 Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Having read Klaus-Dieter's descriptions again, that Red car at 0.18 could be the one from set 60119 Ferry. And he does say that the 60107 Fire Ladder Truck is very similar to the one from 2013 so thats more than likely the one at 0.18 to. Quote
paul_delahaye Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 (edited) There was a blue vehicle and caravan in one of those clips, there was a new caravan set next year I think? Wonder if this is 60117 Vans and Caravan? There is also a nice little TV camera man, that would make a nice little polybag next year. Actually, I guess it is, the number plate matches the set number Edited September 24, 2015 by paul_delahaye Quote
ilikeboomerang1 Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 This will be one of the best years of CITY, alongside 2007, of course: Police supercar! Prison island! Supercar! Blue Chrysler Town & Country! Prison island! Stud shooting fire truck! Garbage dump truck! Tire escaping! Ferry! Gigantic monster truck! PRISON ISLAND!!!! Quote
Oederland Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Well, you can't deny that there are repetitions, and some of them are unnecessary. It's not just about similar sets released every two years, it's also lack of creativity in part. Take the ATVs/buggies. Just looking at City sets, there was a fire ATV in 2010 (30010) and a police ATV (30013), in 2011 we got a police ATV (7279), in 2012 a firefighters ATV (4427), a police ATV (4437), a prisoners ATV (4440). Unsurprsingly, we had another police ATV (60006) in 2013. What about 2014? A police ATV (30228), an arctic team ATV (60035), a prisoners ATV (60043). And in 2015 there's a police ATV (60065), a space ATV (60077), another police ATV (60086), a firefighters ATV (60088), it's surprising we don't get any sea explorers ATV. Leaving aside that I don't seen many ATVs in real life, so likely they are misrepresented - I was a kid myself, and I doubt children are that crazy about ATVs. However, I understand why TLC throws them in everywhere, as they are a play feature (vehicle to move around). But they are also very simple and you don't have to think much about the design. TLC has greatly improved with regard to the larger vehicles/trucks, but the normal cars look somewhat poor / flawed, possibly due to the oversized mudguards and the often missing doors. And they definitely have a problem with designing nice smaller vehicles IMO. A similar topic, helicopters. Look at the Deep Sea sets. It's quite absurd that we get only one set with ships for the explorers, 60095 with the large one and the rubber boat ship (plus the wreck, which doesn't make much sense IMO, why should a modern-looking ship contain gold, but anyway). No small boats in the other sets, not even rubber boats. But a large plane and a large helicopter. Well, great... On the other hand, there have already been various enhancements. For example I like the fact that many of the police or firebrigade sets now include play features like the small scenes with fire to extinguish, a criminal in a car to chase, ... It's also a fact that we get nice building sets in the Creator line nowadays. In contrast, the buildings in the large City sets often look dull, loveless and partly out of place, e.g. like the car shop in 60097 City Square, considering the term "City Square". Maybe they should have released the car shop & associated vehicles in a separate set. It was similar with 60026 Town Square, instead of the superlarge crane truck and the road sweeper (IMO weird in that context, but maybe there are town squares with sweepers like that) they could have added another building, or some more details to the restaurant, or a small park with a few trees or some flowers around the monument. The set looks as if people decided to throw together random stuff, two buidlings, bus, now let's think, we need another large vehicle vehicle vehicle... okay, crane truck, now, what could we do with this large crane, wait... okay, let's add this small statue.
