Well, I ran out of Technic sets to review, and this happened :)

Seriously: you have to press the side of the box to tear it open? A set this size? That's insane! A box that cannot be flattened!

Nice review Sariel, changed my mind about this set - not a day one purchase, but certainly a Bricktober acquisition. Most of your "cons" are inconsequential, so overall a set very favorable final impressions. Best part, we finally learn the name of your chief reviewer, Richard Hammond! Now waiting for the walker mod

Homing Hammond Missiles! You reviewed the UCS F40! And I think you dig it.

Now for my multiple bullet-point drivel:

  • See? The sticker sheet isn't that big.
  • Those new wedge-slope parts would deffo be used for big M-tron builds.
  • The roof, meanwhile, is a tad bit inelegant with the seams formed by the Technic beams.
  • Green plates? I surmised they're for mounting the model to your ceiling.
  • "You know there's a problem when even Richard struggles to get in." No he didn't. Even James May fit in the car when he shook it down in a DVD special.
  • "On the bright side, the car is much sturdier than it looks..." impressive, for a $300,000+ Italian supercar.
  • Good thing the enigne can open that far. Hammond should re-check the internals. The car might not start again for a Stig Lap.
  • Who was the voice-over in the Forza clip?
  • "The new wheels covers look great..." I'm with you on that.
  • "...it's a pity they are specific to one car, though." Most other 80's to 90's cars also have those wheels or would look just as good with them.
  • I agree with you on the rear engine cover. Boss work there.
  • If only the 90 in the price was in Philippine Peso... *sigh* Probably if there's a contest I can get into, but I don't build well.

Looks like a solid set, one that hols its own well with the Brit Green Leyland Mini model. It will be hard to motorize, yes--that's what you get with a super-focused supercar that has no driver aids, no A/C, a manual, and strings for door handles--but I believe in your power to motorize this. And I bet it will go quicker than the Mini, too. It's the first production car to break the 200 mph barrier, after all.

Now I seriously wanna go see its race model, the F40 Competizione. AND DON'T YOU DARE PUT MONSTER TRUCK WHEELS, TANK TREADS OR THE WALKER IN IT OR FERRARI WILL NEVER LET TLG SEND YOU A COPY OF ANOTHER FERRARI CAR!!!!!! They made a similar threat to owners who wanted to send the LaFerrari to be tested on TopGear UK, but the one in bold? *Vitruvius voice on* I made that up, it's not true *Vitruvius voice off*

Now go take your Richard Hammond to the actual Richard Hammond

.

Your video is great! I love your hamster.

Great review Sariel! One question. Could you publish a picture or more with all three cars together, so the VW T1 Camper Van, the Mini Cooper and the F40?

That'd be amazing.

Thanks. As for the picture, I don't have the Camper and my Mini is partially disassembled, as shown in the video. So the pic that's already in the video is the best I can do.

ok, too bad ...

But I'll have to buy this set nonetheless - I will post a picture with all three together then :)

it's possible to have a picture with the part list please Sariel?

I waited for F40 set for ages, now it happens and Im pretty dissapointed with it.Lets hope that bburago come with diecast F40...

So lets save money for Arocs!

I have to agree with you. But I have no choice, I must buy it to have the entire collection (T1 Camper Van, Mini Cooper, F40) comple - there's no way back now :)

Also I've already pre-ordered the Arocs. It's available for 155 € here in Austria (only at one/two shops) instead of 200 €. Great deal!

The F40 looks better in the video than in the official pics.

looks like a good set for the ferrari fans, thanks for your great review, but the best part was your host

Great video. Love the hamster.

Seriously considering buying the F40. I'm a car guy but generally not a fan of cars built from LEGO. However, this set nicely captures the look and feel of the Ferrari.

very nice vedio, really want one after watching this..

As I expected, a "solid" set. Great? Hmmm, maybe, maybe not, but definitively (very?) good. The proportions surely are off, but I think that's ok since it's a brick model. Like somebody said, not a Day 01 purchase but I will buy it for sure.

And I honestly think nobody can complain about the stickers. Those who do complain should first assemble a Speed Champions set (specially the 458 Italia).

User rafdk posted a pic of all three together on instagram - F40 seems to have a much lower roof line than both the camper and the mini, i think all 3 will look good displayed together

lego_creator_expert_icjpg.jpg

Most enjoyable build of the three.

1. Ferrari F40

2. VW T1 Camper Van

3. Mini Cooper

Which car is the least recognizable being made of LEGO bricks.

1. Mini Cooper - the smooth look of this still amazes me, it is almost not recognizable as a LEGO set

2. Ferrari F40 / VW T1 Camper Van

Most advanced and uncommon building technices used.

1. Ferrari F40

2. VW T1 Camper Van

3. Mini Cooper

Most hatted model for its extensive use of stickers.

1. Ferrari F40 - there should have been a way to get around using those black stickers (x4) in front of the car :(

Wish for next years iconic car recreated with LEGO bricks.

Audi Quattro Sport S1 - but with printed only pieces!

I am more inclined to predict McLaren F1, but your choice is just as neat.

I think a rally car for a break would be nice - McLaren F1 seems like a logical car for LEGO to recreate but we just got a supercar, let's wait till 2017 for the next one.

I thought some of you might like this ...

  • 4 weeks later...

I built this set yesterday and I agree with what many said before me - the main attraction is the build itself. Some ingenious techniques only matched by a few of the modular buildings. Very fun build!

The model itself looks pretty good when finished, better than on pictures. It's a bit blocky of course, and there's room for improvement; the bulky spoiler wing could easily have been made slimmer, for example. I I think because the front is bulkier than on the the actual car, it looks shorter and a little out of proportion. But overall, it looks good and relatively true to the original.

The biggest flaw is the extensive use of stickers. I can live with the logotypes being stickers, but the rest is annoying. The stickers for the popup headlights are awful, and same goes for the air intakes on the top. A pitty since the brick built intakes on the front-top and sides are excellent.

All in all, I give it an 8.5/10. Better than the Mini but not quite as good as the camper van. For the next model I'm wishing it's not another supersport car, maybe a 60's or 70's American muscle car?
