StickFig Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 "It's true, but you got to be careful, the other week, someone tried to sell me a fake. It didn't even work right, it only pointed north. How useless is that?" "Wait, faker than this?!" Matthias can hardly believe his ears. "There's a start." Momentarily confused, Matthias looks at Daneeka and starts to reply, "It's just showing us back the way we..." Finally the gnome realizes that the doctor and Holla are looking at the later's compass, which appears to have a new direction, so he shuts up and starts walking in the direction indicated by Holla's compass, carrying the anvil with him. Quote
Zepher Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 "If we are able to track down the other half of the map, we may not find ourselves so lost," says Daneeka as he follows behind Guts. "Of course, we can only hope that it is in the Wastelands. The compass may be taking us as far as half way around the world. What sort of range does your device have, Guts? Do you know?" The heroes march through the desert. Sand gets in their shoes, and the sun beats down. Daneeka keeps them hydrated, but it is difficult going, still. Every once in a while, the compass quivers and the needle changes where it's pointing ever so slightly. "Strange," remarks Daneeka as he watches over Guts' shoulder. Quote
Scubacarrot Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 "Maybe there's some sort of interference. We could be walking in circles, for all we know." Guts digs for treasure. Quote
Zepher Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 Guts digs again, and is rewarded with another bone. "There could be interference," says Daneeka as he passes the heroes another canteen. "Or the map itself could be moving. If you were to direct the compass at me, and I were to pace, would it not do a similar thing as it is now? We have half the map and were willing to go into the Wasteland. Perhaps someone else has retrieved the other half." "If that is the case, it may be a good sign. A person across the globe pacing would not excite the needle to movement - the map would have to be markedly closer than that." Quote
The Legonater Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 (edited) I thought we were going towards the area on the map? Though I suppose this would be more prudent. Edited October 24, 2015 by The Legonater Quote
Zepher Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 OoC: Ah, I can see how the wording of Guts' request could go either way... it was a little confusing. I thought he asked for it to point to the other half of the torn map aka the area where the physical map is. He meant for it to point to the area the half you had displayed... my mistake. Quote
StickFig Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 (edited) Matthias sets the anvil down and pulls his own compass out again. "Point to the physical location which corresponds to the mark indicating the Fountain of Youth on the other half of the map that Master Guts has," he says very carefully. Zepher Posted October 26, 2015 Author Posted October 26, 2015 Matthias sets the anvil down and pulls his own compass out again. "Point to the physical location which corresponds to the mark indicating the Fountain of Youth on the other half of the map that Master Guts has," he says very carefully. Matthias' compass spins wildly. Guts', still locked on to the other half of the map, stays strongly pointing in one general direction. "I think I got an easily confused model. Daneeka, can I suggest you work on an upgrade for these things?" "There are some ancient magics even I cannot overcome. I would hypothesize that the Fountain's location is purposely shrouded. As we have just discovered, these compasses are not particularly rare - if the Fountain were that easy to find, I don't think the outpost would have only three denizens. It would probably be a humming thriving city, with innumerable tour guides leading interested foreigners directly to the Fountain." "So we must use our wits." The sun has started to get particularly hot and painful. Even Daneeka is sweating at this point. Quote
The Legonater Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 In that case, we should continue on our previous course. Let's find the other half of this map. Quote
Zepher Posted October 26, 2015 Author Posted October 26, 2015 The party trudges a little forward until, in the distance, they see some shimmering figures drawing closer. Strange wanderers? Do you have water? Do you have food? My horse grows thin hu hu hu." "You can't pass through the Wastelands without our say so," chuckles a hobgoblin from behind the party. "Many have tried. And now their bones litter these grounds. He he he. But we bring them back, don't worry." "If you're lucky, the shamans might bring you back too..." "Hu hu hu. StickFig Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 Setting the Anvil aside very deliberately, Matthias jerks the Fireball Extraordinaire into position and attacks Kanvyral from the back row. Scubacarrot Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 "We run, in a sandstorm we all die." Guts throws a smokebomb. Quote
Zepher Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 The heroes flee and plunge into the incoming sandstorm. With a snarl, their advisories follow them. Sand whips at everyone's faces. The heroes stumble along, barely able to make each other out. Their enemies howl behind them, around them. And then suddenly the sandstorm stops, dying entirely. The heroes turn around. "You're not being very kind to our newest friends, are you?" says the winged creature. "Out of my way or I eat you too." "I think not." He looks over his shoulder. "Are you prepared to fight, heroes?" Quote
The Legonater Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 You must be an adviser of the Soul Sucker. Or the Soul Sucker himself. There's no need for conflict, we're just passing through. Quote
StickFig Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Just short of yanking the Extraordinaire's trigger, Matthias becomes very aware of the approaching sandstorm, and as Holla's smoke bomb topples across his field of vision almost in slow motion, the gnome decides that his party leader definitely has the right idea. Somehow tucking a cannon that's bigger than he is under his mechanically-enhanced arm, Matthias hoists the Anvil () and flees a few steps before being overtaken by the storm. As the dust settles a little too quickly, Matthias again switches from anvil to cannon and regards the newcomer with suspicion. "We're ready to fight, though, if it comes to that," he adds, not satsified with Rone's attempt at de-escalation and doing his best to sound big and menacing. - which isn't saying much. Noticed the "Anvil of Torrik" in Matthias' inventory - typo or thinly veiled clue that the anvil isn't what it seems? Quote
Zepher Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 OoC: Just a typo, sorry. "No need for conflict? You've already found yourself a conflict, hero. Are you hoping to leave us to fight your battle?" "I say we kill the nazar staalo. Trying to run from battle! Or at least leave them to die." "Do not be foolish, Medusa. You know the Sar wants them alive." "Enough talk! We'll kill you all!" Quote
Scubacarrot Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Guts wondered if they had not just have traded in one group of psychos in favor of another. One problem at a time. The marauder drinks a Mead, Smelling Salts and Nostrum. "It's called advancing in a different direction." Quote
The Legonater Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 "No need for conflict? You've already found yourself a conflict, hero. Are you hoping to leave us to fight your battle?" Scubacarrot Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 "I believe what we've got here is one, hostile group of desert raiders attacking us, the ones with the bones, then the other, for now neutral, group showing up with the winged, pale, fellow in the lead." "Who is this Sar, and why does he want people alive?" Quote
StickFig Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Surveying his pockets, the gnome comes up with nothing worth using to prepare for what looks like a very interesting battle. Zepher Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 "No intention of fighting a battle. So, what, you're looking to run and saddle us with your trouble?" "Peace, sister."
