Posted July 29, 20159 yr so after ages waiting for a good deal i finally bought oneoff ebay for 40 Euro....it had a few of the unique/rare yellow and black #3713 bushes missing...but thankfully i has them in my second hand parts bags. The set i got was filthy!....like really REALLY bad. Anyways i had always planned to take it apart and keep unique/rare parts...of which this set has many, and rebuild the set and use as many brand new parts as i had collected. From a parts perspective this set is highly unique, it has tons of parts only found in this set, many more are very rare and only found in a handful of sets....most not even Technic related. You should take a peek at the parts list, as far as i know this set is also unique from how it is built....the chassis is built frist, then the entire blue outerfame is bult and just placed on top. the colour scheme is also quote unique....check out the parts and the colours used! i am deffo gonna build the A and B as soon as i aquire all the parts i need, i need to but a second hand set to ensure i got thr wheels and the really rare stuff that i cant find brand new parts for. http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=8435-1
July 29, 20159 yr Looks naff. What tons of unique parts are you talking 'bout? Tons means at least more than one to me, possibly several kilos ;) Loads of common beams, pins and whatnot is what I see Cheers, Ole
July 29, 20159 yr I find this set attractive as well. It was on my post dark age return wishlist. It contains quite a few rare or expensive parts indeed.

Tons means at least more than one to me, possibly several kilos ;) Loads of common beams, pins and whatnot is what I see This set is from 2004 when LEGO was going crazy with making in every part in every color they could think of. There are indeed a wide range of rare and unique part colors in this set. In fact, I think this set has more rare parts than any other set I own. Unless you own 5000 copies, it is not tons though. ;-)
July 29, 20159 yr I think it's pig ugly, I own it for the purposes of a complete collection, but I don't rate it for it's looks.
July 29, 20159 yr It's the only set that has dark gray engine cylinders. It also has black and dark gray 5x7 beams with quarter ellipse. These parts are super handy but unfortunately super rare. I only have eight, of which four are from this set. It also has the rare trans dark-red 3x7 bent beams that you can find in the Nitro Menace 8649 as well. Not sure why they went for those though. It also has a few connectors in tan and white, such as the 2x2 split connector or the 3x0.5 beam with pin. It also has the 2x6.5 suspension arms in white. The mirror parts I have not yet found any other use of, but which might be nice to have studs at an angle. The many blue 1x2 bricks with axlehole from this set are also the only ones in my collection. Not sure why those 1x8 bricks are in the set though. The set contains the inline axle joiners in blue and dark gray, I believe both are not very often occurring in other sets. And aren't the wheels unique to this set as well? I do agree that the model is not very nice to look at, and while the main model is OK-ish, the alternative model is wholly uninspiring. Somehow of the main model I think the proportions are off, it looks "toyish" with the very tall windscreen and the low bonnet/hood. It's also very open, but this set is from before the new panels were invented. Also the towing arm is fixed, so from a technical standpoint it's not very intriguing, even though it has an engine, steering and suspension (I always liked the rear suspension though)

July 29, 20159 yr Dear Eric, I know when/why TLG went crazy back then (probably more than most folks here) but I still do not see this set as 'unique' or having loads of rare parts .. a few maybe, but not 'loads' ;) Then you must not be looking very closely! Rare parts include: Black bushings Black pulley wheels Black 5x7 thin elliptical liftarms 1x9 links Ball joint steering arms (6571) Rare tires (only came in 2 Technic sets) Lots of uncommon blue parts Blue pin long with stop bush DBG engine cylinders (unique to this set) DBG knob wheels DBG #2 axle connectors DBG 5x7 thin elliptical liftarms DBG pin connector perpendicular 2x2 bent (44809) LBG 1x2 gear rack (unique to this set) Tan axle and pin connector perpendicular split (unique to this set) Tan 1x3 cranks Trans red 7x3 bent liftarms White bushings White half bushings White pin connector perpendicular 2x2 bent (44809) White steering arms (unique to this set) White steering knuckes Yellow bushings Yellow pin connector perpendicular 2x2 bent (44809) Yellow pin long with stop bush As I said, this set has more rare parts than any other Technic set. This clearly identifies it as a 2004 set. What is really striking about it is that, as you build it, you see that almost none of those parts really needed to be those rare colors. They could have been common colors and the model would have looked nearly the same. I have parted out a few of these in the past because they can often be acquired for much less than the value of their parts. Also, if you happen to need some of the rare parts, they can be nearly impossible to buy individually on Bricklink.
July 29, 20159 yr Then define the word 'unique' for me then, please Yeah, I can BL too, so no this set does not have a 'tons of parts only found in this set' .. that was what I objected to Now, list the the parts ONLY found in this set .. : Cheers, Ole

Most of the parts listed are not unique to the set, but many are very rare or hard to find. I agree the OP was exaggerating a bit, but the core thought that this is a very good parts pack for rare parts is accurate. I'm not a big fan of the word "tons" used as an adjective because it is nearly always hyperbole. According to my list above, I found at least 4 parts which are unique to this set in a particular color. 8880 is another model with plenty of rare and unique suspension parts, some of which never came in another set in any color. Obviously, most molds for new parts are made with the intention of using them on many models, but sometimes they are not for whatever reason. The pneumatic cylinder brackets, for example, were only used twice and only the first time was for a pneumatic usage. Fiber optics, micro motors, and air tanks were also very rarely used. I've heard the stories of much money the company developing some of those components to then only use them in a handful of sets.

Yes....there was no way for me to get the wheels and engine blocks without buying a used set, BNIB sets are very expensive, and even second hand sets can be quite pricey. I got mine cheap as it had no box or manuals, and some parts were missing + filty. I took it apart and dumped the vast majority of the parts, as i had been collecting brand new parts for this set for over a year, as they popped up etc. Its amazing who rare those black and yellow bushes are....i got the white ones brand new very easy. have all of the blue liftarms new....i had just under 700 parts new, but this set has parts that are only found in this set. looks wise its not that great, but blue is a nice colour, pendular rear suspension and full independent suspension on the front. its boxy and framey to be sure....but it has a certain something that compelled me to buy it.
July 30, 20159 yr I own this set and I was quite happy with it when I bought it. The suspension works really well and it offers lots of playability for kids. It's not the best looking set, but we're talking 2004. I think any kid would still love to play with this set.

For a 2004 set it's pretty nice, I recall most of the Technic sets from that period to by pretty Sci-Fi-ish in terms of the bodywork, yet this car appears pretty plausible. And the functions and feats are nice, especially the double winch. Nice to have those dark grey cylinders, as well...
July 30, 20159 yr I never knew why they have called this set AWD ... when it is only RWD with V6 monted on front... stil it looks nice especially those tires.
July 30, 20159 yr I never knew why they have called this set AWD ... when it is only RWD with V6 monted on front... stil it looks nice especially those tires. It's an internal TLG reference to how the design was passed - A Wonky Directive. I built one with none of the rare parts except wheels and steering rack and I like it.
July 31, 20159 yr @Richard: what do you mean when you say you have no way to buy the wheels? I just checked Bricklink, tires start at 27 cents. Ebay is the worst place to buy lego period.
July 31, 20159 yr the wheels are the same as used in the RC Racers cars of that era, too.. I have a stack of them (along with this set) This was the 2nd set I bought, after coming out of dark ages.. (I got 8436 truck for my birthday that year) I ended up buying 8435+8436 together off someone on ebay for AU$100 (so I have 2 copies of the truck!) Can't say I've had them built all that many times over the years.. but they were great parts packs! a good start to my studless collection Compare this era of studless sets, vs recent years, and you'll see quite an evolution in building techniques. Back then, there were still a lot of parts used from the studded era (even-spacing, 4-wide diffs/universal joints) This resulted in a few odd ways of building Now that everything has evolved to 'odd' parts (3 wide diffs/joints), things are a lot simpler

To add: White Spoked Wheel, White Technic Steering Wheel (Both are exclusive to this set) I know both of these well since I needed the white wheels (as pulley's) for JC's Demag Crane (Which Eric promptly changed to the much more common LBG wheels)
August 1, 20159 yr Richard isn't a fan of BL. Has he ever said why? I purchased this set for under 25 Euro a few years ago, minus the large quarter ellipses. It was some time before I got them replaced! Now that I've had it so long, I forget how rare its parts are, like the bushes. However, right now the only blue 1x15 beam I have is from it! I probably would not have wanted it if it hadn't been on the back of the instructions for 8418, the first Technic set I ever played with. One reason for its uniqueness: It is the only set done by its designer. If he had stayed on, we might have had some more idiosyncratic sets like it! Edited August 1, 20159 yr by BachAddict
August 1, 20159 yr Author i have no good reason for not using bricklink....i just dont. i am just used to using ebay, it has served me well thus far and i have a good relationship with several ebay stores/sellers. if i am missing a part they are kind enough to go on bricklink and buy the stuff i need...course they add on a charge, but that capilalism...and maybe srupidity on my part. as for the set, a big part of me wanting it as you say is its uniqueness, in terms of the rare colours used. i agree with Blackbird that they could have used standard colours and it would have looked the same. most of the rare colours are used in the inside of the chassis...you dont really see them. i thought since it was 2004 that maybe TLG were trying to use up their inventories and get rid of certain parts in certain colurs.....?, but then they go and produce yet more parts in colours only found in this set, like the tan parts and the DBG engine blocks? its a weird set on many levels. One reason for its uniqueness: It is the only set done by its designer. If he had stayed on, we might have had some more idiosyncratic sets like it! I got the blue beams brand new ok, the hard part to find were the 1x13 liftarms on blue...but i got them just recently, i bought 20 of them brand new, they were shiny and spotless :-) most of the parts can easily be replaced and found brand new, save for the parts already listed above. as i have said before on other threads my aim is to get the set as cloase to BNIB as possible. To add: White Spoked Wheel, White Technic Steering Wheel (Both are exclusive to this set) I know both of these well since I needed the white wheels (as pulley's) for JC's Demag Crane (Which Eric promptly changed to the much more common LBG wheels) yes....the sterring wheel as you say is only found in this set in white, i found an ebay store that had them brand new...he is selling 4 of them in a lot VERY cheap, if you want to do a search yourself. i would even say the steering arms were very rare as well, at least they were before the cargo plane appeared: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=6572&colorID=1&in=A that cargo plane actually brought back several parts in rare colours back into circulation, the same with #32250 part, which had not been seen in several years: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=32250&colorID=85&in=A that is one good thing about TLG and Technic, each year they do seem to rereleas parts that were rare....for someone like me who is actively building old Technic sets and buying parts it is great!
