MrHerofan Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 It's really sad to hear some of these stories. It must have hurt to hear, that, like why can't some lego fans appreciate both types of lego? While there are some really great system people out there, when it gets to constraction they talk about it as if its a small kids toy, as if the system brick is anything else. Quote

While there are some really great system people out there, when it gets to constraction they talk about it as if its a small kids toy, as if the system brick is anything else. One of the really sad things is that it has the unfortunate effect of making the constraction community even MORE insular (all these doom and gloom predictions spring to mind...). I remember saying around this time last year that we should all try a little harder to be more accepting of everyone, but there's some progress that still needs to be made =) Quote
CM4Sci Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 sometimes can be awful like FNAF's fandom Oof, hmm. I happen to be a fan of those games, and I agree the fanbase is absolutely terrible. I'm not particularily fond of BIONICLE fans either (no offence guys!) but I think the BIONICLE sets are fine. Don't really see where I'm going with this. Quote

DraikNova Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Considering some parts of the fanbase, I've honestly got to agree with CM4Sci. Quote

Aethersprite Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I would like to think that Huw is simply ignorant and doesn't care. I don't think he would go so far as to hate the theme; after all, he did bother to review 2015 Tahu last year (and posed his shoulder armour pieces horribly, IIRC). Still, 1) we're the only theme to have gotten leaked prelims for the entire wave, and 2) Nuremberg is in a couple of days and CCBS traditionally always gets decent coverage there, unlike other themes. Don't despair! Quote
CM4Sci Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 If it were my job to report on eveything, I would write down as much as I could, even if I don't know the correct terms for things you guys use, "bones?" "??? blue?" I don't really like BIONICLE but I even drew those pictures of the 1HY 2016 sets. I didn't mind. Everyone went ballistic over them. Like seriously, 300 replies in 10 minutes after I post one on TTV. Quote
Shakar Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Short preview of Journey to One up on the Facebook page. Looks pretty great! Quote

Bigger Fish Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I really hope the voice acting is good, the narrate sounded off. I really like the style and have been waiting for this for so long. Quote
Dr_Chronos Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I must have watched the Tahu video at least 15 times already and I'm still clicking replay. The quality is absolutely fantastic and the cel-shades work much better than I though they would. Most importantly for me is the amount of dynamic angles and movements, which was something the animations lacked. Everything feels so alive. The effects were also very impressive. I was dampering my hype for JTO but now it has hit maximum overdrive! Quote
MrHerofan Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I don't know, it almost seems unfinished for me. I've seen it twice and I get the feeling that the budget on this show is smaller than that of most LEGO shows. Like the narration felt very generic and while the movements are good, it still looks unfinished to me. Quote
DraikNova Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 (edited) Eegh, that accented set-accurate CGI . It's so off-looking compared to the backgrounds. Edited January 25, 2016 by DraikNova Quote
Aanchir Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Agree. I'm a great fan of Bionicle, but the fanbases can be sometimes been terrible. " (This is real) "Great" one for this, and what's next? Lego System sets burning party? Any fanbase will have its bad elements, especially when it's a large one with lots of different perspectives. Members of a lot of fandoms also often seem to have a nasty habit of seeing other series and fan communities, even friendly ones, as "competition". Some people just seem to have a hard time raising up series they like without tearing down others. Anyway, loving this Tahu character video. The Journey to One style looked cool enough in stills, but seeing it in motion and watching the interplay between the detailed, largely set-accurate characters and the more expressive scenery and effects is quite thrilling! I also think Tahu looks much, much better in this style than he does in the actual sets, since his hips and upper legs aren't so scrawny. The style is set accurate to a point but it's also not afraid to add extra articulation and fill in gaps. In this way, it feels lifelike without feeling particularly "unfaithful" to the original designs. I dig it! Quote
TheDesuComplex Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I am loving this preview a lot! It's been said many times why this is good with its really good blending of 2D and 3D, and it is really blowing me away. Looking forward to seeing the series in action come Febuary 20th. Quote
One Very Agile Cat Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I like the animation. Reminds me of Telltales' game series. I think the backgrounds are a little plain but it's overall colourful and expressive without needing silly looking faces on the masks. I get the feeling that the budget on this show is smaller than that of most LEGO shows. Probably because it is. Lego has made it very clear they don't really care about Bionicle. It's just another property owned by an unfeeling, impartial corperate giant. This is not Bionicle G1 where there was an actual sense of devotion by people involved. I'm surprised they sprung for a show of any kind. Eegh, that accented set-accurate CGI Would you prefer set-inaccurate CGI? Quote

I know that LEGO is just doing the theme to just do it, but even with the first hero factory series or the first four episodes of Ninjago when it got released, looked like they had a bigger budget than this. It is unfortunate that the theme seems to be getting less love than others. Quote
Kalhiki Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 (edited) Not bad. Kinda reminds me of the current TF series Robots in Disguise (the art style of which I love). That sorta cartoony CGI hits a good spot on me. Backgrounds aren't too great, but eh. The action will be with the Toa anyway. Now all that's left is to hear the voices! (Hope the narrator isn't the voice of Tahu...) Edited January 25, 2016 by Kalhiki Quote
DraikNova Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Would you prefer set-inaccurate CGI? I'd prefer if the CGI was a little more abstract and stylized, so that characters look like they fit into the scenery and aren't just pasted over them. Quote

I'm surprised they sprung for a show of any kind. Having met several of the people behind the Bionicle reboot, I'll be the first to tell you that you couldn't be more wrong. The people creating Bionicle G2 care deeply about what it is they're creating. That care obviously doesn't override the business angle of the theme (questions of profitability, target audiences, etc), and it never did, even in G1. That's part of why Bionicle succeeded when other wildly ambitious LEGO projects like Galidor and LEGO Studios were failing left and right. But it's extremely insulting to insist writers, designers, and marketers don't actually care about what they create just because you don't appreciate the decisions they've made with it. Perhaps the creators of the Bionicle reboot don't care about what you think personally, but judging from your general ignorance and willingness to assume the worst of them, they probably shouldn't. Seriously, sounds a little uncalled to me, even though the guy you were scolding was objectively wrong. Sorry. Insults to creative professionals like writers, designers, etc. are a pet peeve of mine; always have been. It's one thing to say you don't think a designer did a good job. That's just criticizing their work. Designers aren't infallible — they screw up sometimes and don't always know what their audience wants. And if they don't deliver, you have every right to criticize that. However, if you say they "phone it in" or don't put in an effort or aren't devoted to what they do, then you're insulting their character. That's a lot worse, in my opinion. LEGO being a profit-driven company (as they've always been) doesn't mean their designers are mere drones who only value the company's bottom line. A designer doesn't even get hired by the LEGO Group, let alone get to a position in the company where they get to make big decisions about a theme's direction, by not caring about their work. Seriously, sounds a little uncalled to me, even though the guy you were scolding was objectively wrong. Seems pretty justified to me to be honest... I'm normally really mild-mannered here on Eurobricks but I would have said the same. What really annoys me is when people berate Lego for being "lazy" or"not caring" about anything, especially Bionicle, because Lego is a company that devotes so much time to please their fans and make great toys for kids. Lego even goes above and beyond pas most companies to make sure they deliver the best products so it's really aggravating when people think they're just another uncaring, corporate giant... Quote
