Im very interested in this theme however the dolls turns me off just a little bit.. if it were actual minifigs they had been instant buys. How do the dolls hold up? Worth it even if you prefer minifigs?

My local toystore is selling the "Starlight Inn" really cheap and Im really thinking of getting that.

Starlight Inn was the first Elves set I bought (at my wife's request ). It is a really good value, and the Elves minidolls themselves are quite charming. They aren't as versatile or customizable as minifigs, but I don't regret getting the set. It convinced me to pick up some other Elves sets (at a huge discount, mind you).

I wish the minidolls integrated better into what we usually accept as "in system", but the unique parts are astonishing, and the set designs themselves are some of the best I have seen from LEGO in recent years. I'd recommend buying at least that set to start off with, and see what you think after that.

I don't really have any preference between mini-dolls and minifigures. I think the actual "built" portions of the Elves sets are generally strong enough designs that they would be good buys no matter what type of figures they include! I don't think there are any Elves sets I'd really consider "duds". Nothing of the sets' playability or display value is really lost if you swap the mini-dolls out for minifigures, other than the ability to fit two characters side by side in the front or back of the Pegasus Sleigh.

I think the mini-dolls themselves can be surprisingly lovable once you have your hands on them. They have all kinds of great molded and printed details, and feel considerably more "lifelike" than minifigures (and a good match to the human-like characters used in the theme's promotional material). Proportion-wise, they're about the size of a generic battle droid from LEGO Star Wars — in fact, the battle droid torso, arms, and legs could make a good mini-doll android. And of course, their hair and hand-held accessories are fully compatible with classic minifigures (capes, unfortunately, are not, due to the mini-doll's thinner neck stud). Even if you just think of them as a "novelty" rather than a part of an actual collection, I think they do add to the sets.

My daughter (age 4) has a combination of minifigures and minidolls. She tends to play with whichever is to hand at the moment.

Even when my son (age 8) is playing (who also has Mixels and Minecraft-type figures), I don't see any inclination to avoid minidolls. when he's playing with an Elves set (or dragon), he reaches for a minidoll. When it is a Minecraft set, he reaches for a Minecraft figure. Etc.

I picked up the Adventure Ship the other day, and while I quite like it, it doesn't really display with the other sets well IMO. The other sets I have look very natural, I mean that the buildings fit into their natural setting well. The ship, however, sticks out in its design; it looks more like something built than something that grew over time.

I still really like it, but I am thinking of modding it into a smaller boat and using the rest of the pieces to build a small dock or shanty, so that it fits better with my display. I'll post pics when I'm done.

I got the Starlight Inn yesterday, and was able to put it together today. I quite like the lavender rocks, but it will definitely be de-pinked... as for parts, I like the teapot, the printed tiles like the wood and the compass, and, surprisingly, the baby dragon. I like the little guy so much, that I'm considering collecting all the baby dragons and all the adult dragons, too... which means buying nearly every set this wave and in the summer wave. I'll have to get a set with an adult dragon before I decide further; the Secret Marketplace and the Dragon School are next on my list!

FYI I was in the Belgian Lego store today (Wijnegem) and they have some of the summer sets on sale. I saw Ragana's castle and the Crystal mine, and then I ran away as as fast as I could before I could see any more because I really shouldn't be buying any more Lego right now :D

That seems quite early though. I thought these were announced for august?

The New York Toy Fair display cards listed them for August, but those cards only apply to the North American release dates. From what I've seen the Elves sets are June releases in many European countries.

The LEGO Elves site updated today! Mostly it's just reorganizing the content on the front page, but that comes with some AMAZING new art!

Emily vs. Ragana

Ragana

Elandra in captivity

Aira and Fledge

Naida and the water dragon egg

Azari and the Book of Dragons

Wow, those are really nice! I really like how they went all the way with the scary, 'gothic'-like design of Ragana (and here structures in general).

The castle is too pricey for my budget atm, but I'm really digging the look of that set (and the parts as well). Way to go, Elves!

I wish Emily came with an alternative angry face, so we could recreate this. It looks stunning!

I found Azari and the Magical Bakery and Aira's Creative Workshop at Barnes and Noble today. Had to get them considering I haven't seen them in other stores in a while... and they're no longer on the US S&H. I passed on them before, so I'm glad I found them.

While I don't plan on keeping them together, I really like the sets and all the diverse colored parts, especally the lava falls mechanism in the bakery set that reveals the Fire Key. Now I think I want the Adventure Ship before that is sold out... I just found out I have some VIP points to spend!

Wow, that would make an amazing wallpaper, but I just don't like how Elandra looks in it.

I'll second that. It looks like the dragon is trying to hold in a fart.

They are likely talking about the current summer wave. It's available at s@h now, but every physical store I checked says it's not out yet.

Unless it's an actual whole new wave, and it's unlikely, but post pics of that magazine anyway.
