Vindicare Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 Whilst he isn't entirely Christian, doesn't the honorific 'Saint' give you a little clue about his role as a Christian figure? Not really. Catholic, on the other hand. Quote
Thego Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 Not really. Catholic, on the other hand. Are you saying that Catholicism is not Christianity? I think Catholics might be a bit upset about that. Quote
lorax Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 For me, I think Christmas is about spending time with family around lots of food. So I think a family house, dinner scene would be a perfect addition. Although I love Lego food and would love some new types of Lego food, so a candy store would be perfect for that. Quote
Pingles Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 Gonna try desperately to steer this train back on the tracks: I'd like to see a Holiday Dinner setting. Big Dining Room, little table for the kids. Maybe with a kitchen scene as well. Quote
Gryphon Ink Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Erm...Santa Claus isn't a Christian thing, it's a commercial thing. Christmas to Christians is the birth of Jesus, not god ol' Saint Nick. Sorry, but you're mistaken. Santa Claus has nothing to do with commercialism. He is an Americanized version of the English Father Christmas and the Dutch Sinterklaas, AKA St. Nicholas, a Christian folkloric figure named after the historical St. Nicholas of Myra. All of these figures were said to bring children gifts on Christmas Eve or on St. Nicholas' feast day, which is December 5. These beliefs go back at least as far as the 15th Century, possibly earlier (St. Nicholas lived in the 4th Century). There are some elements of Germanic paganism in the tradition as well, possibly amalgamated into Christian tradition at the time Charlemagne conquered the Saxons and forced them to convert to Christianity. What Christmas really means is a subject we can debate until the cows come home, but the fact is that Christians have been telling their kids that a mysterious supernatural benefactor delivered their Christmas presents since long before the Reformation. This has nothing to do with the doctrines of the Catholic church and everything to do with the folk beliefs of Christians. Santa, by one name or another, is actually a much older symbol of Christmas than the Christmas tree, an item that became popular in the 16th Century. I apologize to those who feel this discussion is derailing, but I really feel it's important to remember that this theme is called "WINTER Village" and not "CHRISTMAS Village". We now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion of Lego bricks. Quote
Doddsino Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Maybe not a Christmas tie in, but I would love to see more holiday themed sets such as New Year's or Halloween, although I understand why they wouldn't be big sellers. I think the candy store idea is pretty good, especially if we get some new chocolate bar bricks. Quote
Mr. Elijah Timms Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Candy shop sounds great... I'd go for that. There'll never be a loss of possibilities for this line. I think sooner or later we're bound to get another HOLIDAY TRAIN, and I'd be all for that. Hopefully something that fits the theme's retro yet timeless feel and design aesthetic. But I suppose it'd be much smarter to give us a few more houses before hitting us with a large train set. If I were involved with the marketing of the holiday theme, I'd release a few more of the smaller house sets to ensure that collectors were dedicated to buying these on an annual basis, and then drop the big ticket train piece. And we'd all buy it... because it'd tie all of these into one great display. Quote
tafkatb Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 If not for the fact that we're apparently getting a modular Town Hall next year, I would have predicted one for the Winter Village. A ski lodge would be pretty cool though, maybe with a New Year's Eve celebration scene. I would personally love a shelter/soup kitchen set since I associate the holidays with charitable works, but this village is presumably a utopian society where there would be no need for such things. Quote
Wingedman Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 I'd add my 2 cents and call for a Winter Village General Store, or Winter Village Cafe with either more carolers or a little charity bucket and a Good Samaritan. The cafe would go well with the bakery, although its perhaps too generic a shop to fit the theme. Winter Village Petting Zoo would be really far fetched but would be a good way to introduce reindeer, and puppies and lolcats. Also on another note, the Toy Shop is no longer available at the UK S@H :( I saw stacks of it at the Westfield store a couple of weeks ago though. I knew I should have picked up an extra. Quote
Mr Benn Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Hi Wingedman - just checked and the Winter Toy Shop is still available on the Lego site in the UK! Like the bakery, it just doesn't seem to feature in any other pages at the moment. http://shop.lego.com/en-GB/Winter-Toy-Shop-10199 Quote

Somehow when you search Winter village only the bakery and post office show up, but if you search toy shop, 10199 appears. Looks like their site revamp still needs work. Quote
Hewman Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I don't think it will happen (particularly since Grogall has 'guessed' candy shop, and he's never wrong), but I'd love a pub. A fireplace (we know it will have a light-up brick somewhere), much merriment and singing, a dart board on the wall and decorations everywhere. I'm guessing this will be too adult for Lego, but there is a pub in Hogsmeade in Harry Potter (although they might just serve butterbeer there) Quote

lightningtiger Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 'Hewman' is right why not a tavern....a winter tavern with big port kegs and a huge roaring fireplace. Wishful think eh ? Sadly we have to wait months before the truth comes out. Quote
Hewman Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 (edited) Oh a pub would be lovely addition, (MMV has a small type of pub in the downstairs of one of the buildings also). For some reason, I want the minifigs to wear lederhosen and Dirndl. That's because it's Oktoberfest! I was thinking that seeing all the winter sets have some outdoor component, there could be a beer garden. I'm not quite sure who'd frequent a beer garden in the snow though. Perhaps they could have a fire in a 44 gallon drum, although that doesn't bring a warm cheery image to mind. Or maybe they could all be dancing in their lederhosen to stay warm! lightningtiger Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I'm sorry but lederhosen reminds me of from the Ren & Stimpy Show ! Here's another suggestion....Winter Fire Station. Quote
LegoFan03 Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I'd love to see Lego to use Department 56 Dickens Village as an inspiration for Lego Winter Village. I like some people here ideas including Christmas tree farm, candy shop, winter tavern, and ski lodge. I think it should have train station, any building that would include a clock tower, hardware store, mill, a couple of restaurants, and butcher shop. Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 'Legofan03' your right....clock tower in a Town Hall, I remember a Christmas story but a clockmaker's son breaking the clock in the tower and it wouldn't chime for Santa to hear so he could land and make his deliveries. Now a hardware store would be excellent, old hardware store sold more than hardware....a child's sled could be propped up against the front of it along with shovels and the usual fair (footnote - Elvis brought his first guitar at a hardware store in his hometown...if my memory serves me correct ). Quote
andhe Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I'd go for a pet shop or sweet/candy shop, though the latter is quite similar to a bakery. Something along the lines of the general store/hardware store suggestion would also be good, with sleds, trees and other decorations and winter goods on sale (skates, shovels etc). Quote

I think a hardware store would be great, and I'd bet there is one in the pipeline. It's one of the things that almost every winter village display has. You could stock it with all kinds of things, and TLG could hedge if they want to and call it a "General Store" if they don't think "hardware" has enough kid appeal. It HAS to have a sled or toboggan for the kids to play on! Put a Salvation Army-style bellringer out front and maybe a small snow fort/igloo for the "secondary structure" that all the Winter Village sets have. This could make an awesome set. A tavern would be even better in my opinion, and although my first thought was that TLG would never do that, they have actually produced a couple of taverns in recent years. MMV has one, and so does the POTC London Escape set. So maybe it's not completely out of the question. I'd love an old-fashioned bookstore, too. Quote

scottwb2010 Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 I think we could come up with enough ideas for a winter village to keep this theme going for many years to come. Maybe its a pity there is only one release per year but then again thats what probably makes it such a greatly anticipated set. Well I'll throw in my tuppence worth and would like to see a police sttaion, yes even though there are loads of police in the city them but this could have a skidoo, a pub/tavern would be nice and maybe done like an apres ski bar to go with the theme and maybe a medical centre to deal with all those winter related problems like flu and breaks from people falling on the snow and ice. Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 Oh, no not another police station ! Well, I guess a police station would be handy if the Elves steal Santa's ride eh ? Also we only get one per year, well Christmas only comes once a year ! Quote
