It appears much smoother with the nice flow to the engine part, but unless you use stickers, I suppose the constant red stripe would be absent.

Then if you are using a Mac computer, like me, I would suggest getting BrickStock—it is a similar program to LDD Maneger though perhaps simpler.

Happy second page to your topic!

Woah! This thing is great!! Can't wait to see the finished X-Wing. May i ask how are you going to make the wings? Red five or rubber band style?

Thanks for the comments everybody! New update for today. Tinkered around bit and the wings work. WHOOOP WHOOOOOOP! Slapped some blocks in for proportion of the new x wing canopy and added a functioning lower hatch like in the movies. I will be definitely trying it with the bands. Ironically attempted at trying out how lego attached the wings on Poe's model and it made the hexagonal shape a lot more define. Now I only need to work on the bottom, the cannons, the gearbox, and the fine tuning. It won't allow me to attach certain parts I know I can in real life so we may have to wait until I can get parts to see it in the flesh.

I took your advice about the engine nacelle placement and worked on a solution that the build would support. Also, the cannons are simply placeholders for the moment...

those slopes don't look half bad. I am curious where this is going. I am liking the upgrades. though I am not sure about the wings quite yet.

The wings looks good. About the wing cannons, I suggest you to look at the solutions on 9493 or my T-70 and see how they turns out.

Thats great. But are you sure that the rubber bands you will be attaching are not some odd rainbow color? i think they are color coded.

Still not done but really close. The only parts left are working out some odds with the wings, getting a good attachment mechanism for the bands, and figuring out what to do with the landing gear and laser cannon tips.

The wings are coming along fantastically—great job!

Though I think the four cylinder structures are to exaggerated for the S-foils when closed—it presents an illusion that the wings are too short (from the forward/reward perspective).

It looks pretty nice but the engine still need to be lowered a plate. Not sure about those huge cheeks either. Might be better with plates stacked instead. I really do like the back and the look of the engines overall though.

You can see here how the engine intakes almost touch.

Hi Khatmorg! Thanks for the compliment and comments. I've reworked the engines already and I know if I go any farther it will affect the wing stability. It's also a little difficult for me to know exactly how it will handle in LDD rather than bricks so once I get it done "in the flesh" I'll consider going further getting the wings/ engine alignment right. The build i used to get the engines as they are is pretty complex and I don't know how I can get the engines lower a stud without having to start over from the ground up.

I personally prefer having the large slopped wedges over plate built sides. I started off with stacked plates on page 1, and felt I didn't achieve the "hexagonal" tapering shape of the fuselage with plates and decided going with the huge wedges.

Having just looked at the photos, I just realized I need to work on the lazer tips, too.

Alright, officially done minus the laser cannon tips. Everything is done in LDD inside and out. There is some stuff that LDD is a little glitchy with and won't let me put some connections in that I have tried and work in real life. however, all that is here checks out for stability and all I need to do is order the parts. The canopy piece and some printed parts for the inside of the canopy will be used so the tiles there are just placeholders for the moment. I finally got the landing gear to sit stable with the offset engine thrusters, too. The nose gear got bumped forward as well. x%20wing%20front%20gear_zpsdyunnjxk.png

Almost a year out on this and still working out the kinks. I've got almost everything finalized minus the laser cannons (I think they're too long?) and the most important part: working S-foils!

LDD keeps pooping out on me doing some connections so the project is done until I get actual bricks. I took everyone's advice on some parts and now all the colors of the bricks you see in the model are done. Everything can be purchased and has been made in the colors seen. I switched over to the traditional nose rather than what I was going for because the parts are not available in the colors I need yet. When the parts are finally available I'll edit.

Update is going to be pic heavy and will have a new thread tonight on another project I whipped up and will see about posting an LDD file for if anyone is interested. Hint on other project: CHROOOOOOOOME! Well, maybe.... Depending on $$$$$

One of the things I became slightly obsessed with was the cockpit for some reason. I have no idea why, but I wanted to make it more detailed. There's many photos online and ironically the cockpits actually were different in all three films from the OT so I didn't shoot for something to be accurate as possible.

I reworked and completed the rear cargo hatch. This build was quite funky to me, but I enjoyed the result with the inverted 2x4 tile on the bottom; it breaks up what would be usually just a normal plate up build.

The new X wing canopy was available in extended, so without further ado...

The moment you all, mostly myself, have been waiting for...

In two words: I'm satisfied.

With the Engine design and the thinness of the wings, I am having a hard time devising how to get the mechanism for the bands to work. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? I'd truly appreciate it! This is what I am working with.

Looks great, the cockpit is excellent and I really think the effort spent on it is justified - fab job.

what kind of mechanism did you incorporate into the s foils? rubber band? or ratcheted wings?

I would love to see a shot of the interior.

  • Author

Thanks for the compliments Hold! Green, the mechanism is the same as 9493. I just can't for the life of me figure out how to get the rubber bands to work on the back of the wings. Also by interior shots are you meaning interior of the cargo bay or?

I was mostly talking about the mechanism used on the S foils. You mentioned its from set 9493. I dont like the mechanism used for the newer x wings. It somewhat destroys the sleek look they were going for. Moving it over to the rear just seems more appropriate to me, its just I haven't found a way to do that with Poe's x wing and its irritating haha.

That's one of my major gripes about that model, too! Putting the huge winding crank on the top makes it look toyish to me. Then again, I am talking about a building construction toy designed for children.

Exactly. In attempt to eliminate the top crank, I moved it to the bottom. Works perfectly fine and is hardly noticeable against the black, and it actually makes for a practical spot. Bad part is that you have to remove the rear gray landing gear. Still working out the kinks however. I'll probably be making a post about the mod later later on.
