I've never read anything New52, but was wondering if anyone could fill me in on what minifigures are New52 inspired. I know the red Nightwing is, Wonder Woman from the Grodd set, and maybe Robin from the Batboat, but that's about it... Who else? DarkSeid bigfig?

Darkseid is somewhat New 52, especially with size, although his design didn't change much. Green Arrow is New 52, and although it's fairly subtle, so is Cyborg. Batman's recent gray costume across multiple sets (i.e. Jokerland) is. Some of the characters didn't really get a visual overhaul in the New 52, like Green Lantern and Aquaman, but the minifig versions are designed to reflect their modern look, so they could technically count.

Yep! Something like this:

  • Red Nightwing
  • Batgirl
  • Polybag Martian Manhunter
  • Batman and Wonder Woman from the Grodd set
  • Green Arrow (both SDCC and Darkseid versions are New 52)
  • Cyborg
  • Hawkman
  • Darkseid
  • Batboat Robin
  • Harley Quinn from Jokerland and the new Batcycle Chase
  • Katana, Red Hood, and Captain Boomerang in the new Killer Croc set

Flash is too, but he is close enough to his classic version that people don't usually count him. Some characters like Green Lantern, Aquaman, Damian Wayne, and Blue Beetle also wear pretty much the same thing pre and post 52. Even counting those, I may have missed one or two.

He's based on Flashpoint not The New 52, as far as I know at least.

Oooooh, that might be right. Has he popped up as Plastic Man in the New 52 at all?

I plan on eventually ordering fleshie legs and throwing a red torso on him to make him 'classic' anyway lol

From Lego Wikia..

- Plastic Man's LEGO appearance is based on his appearance in the Flashpoint comic series. He has not had a proper appearance in the New 52 reboot, and thus his most recent design was used.

That makes sense - I'd forgotten that you see Eel get doused with something in Justice League #25 or whatever, but then he's never seen again lol - just assumed the costume was from later down the line, didn't realize that thread was never picked back up. I imagine he'd look like that in the New52 though, so it's close enough for me!

Is the polybag Martian Manhunter considered new 52, and the one in the Braniac set classic comic?

Yes indeed, I believe the only look he doesn't have in Lego form would be his post-Brightest Day appearance;

He's appeared in his new series in the post-Convergence DCU, but that's used his New52 look and a bunch of other alternate identities for him.

You are correct. The LEGO DC Comics Encyclopedia that came out yesterday confirms this as well.

Sort of. In the first issue of Justice League International, they show him on a TV screen in the background as someone they were considering adding, but after that, he hasn't appeared. As retrotaco mentioned, Eel does show up and gets thrown into a vat of liquid, but we haven't seen him since then either.

I know these events like New 52 are used to re-boot the universe and attract new readers who wouldn't want to familiarize themselves with the whole canon in order to follow the continuity, but man, it doesn't really simplify things, at least not for a casual fan like me. I started reading the comics a little after enjoying the Burton films when they came out and the TAS in the 90s, and the Dark Knight trilogy and the Lego got me out of my DC dark ages, but I'm just revisiting the old Loeb and Miller and Moore stuff, so mostly Batman, rather than the new stuff published in the last couple of decades. Way too much material to get into, and I don't really need another collecting-geared hobby that drains my time and money...

So true - they say they're doing it for the purpose of simplicity, but just look at Plastic Man - the old one doesn't exist, the newest one you can find is from an 'alternate Earth' that doesn't exist anymore, and then they re-introduced Eel to completely forget about him after they already retconned his JLI appearance out of continuity. Yup. Reeeeaaaal simple.

Who would've thought having dozens of writers across fifty-ish stories that mostly have to tie in together as one mega-continuity would ever get confusing? :D

My way of reading comics is like this: Read the story arcs I want, don't worry about the rest, and let future stories explain any little details from before that are relevant to the current arc. When that fails, and something doesn't make sense without the prior information, just guess. It's usually close enough to clear things up temporarily.

I've only recently(like, today) began reading comics again. I visited my local comic book store and picked up some of the 2015 Martian Manhunter series. This is completely overwhelming. I'd really like to read some of the classic comics that the movies are being based off of for both Marvel and DC, but I don't even know where to start.

What is this new MM 2015 series you speak of?

Also: If you like MM, make sure to pick up the reprinted TPBs of Ostrander and Mandrake, i read them a while back for the first time an they're GLORIOUS! I just wish i'd find any info whether Volume 2 (Rings of Saturn) was the last one or whether it was cancelled or what? It's been over a year and no volume 3 in sight?

The 2015 series began in August and features MM holding Earth in his right hand on the cover of #1. I bought 1-4 today and they were really interesting.

I've been looking at the collections you mentioned, but I don't have any spare cash at the moment. They look great though, I'm really interested in reading some of the older stuff.

Martian Manhunter's series has been really, really cool.

Mercury, honestly you'd probably do best waiting for DC's Rebirth event - it's going to position almost all their books into 'relaunch' territory, so they're expecting lots of new readers, and the Rebirth issues will be catching people up, will be much easier to dive into that.
