Posted August 26, 20159 yr Yes,as always It is a build with a difference from me. I though it might be cool to build a truck virtually, and for you to watch, you may even learn something new. https://www.youtube.com/user/Alasdairryan/live Edited August 26, 20159 yr by Alasdair Ryan
August 26, 20159 yr Good to see you using LDCad! How do you find it? Hot tip: There are a lot of keyboard shortcuts that will really help you out. I especially use the following: "P" to turn the "pin" on/off "C" to center view on current selection 1, 2, 3, 4 to quickly switch between preset stepping (just saw you went into the menu to change that) ctrl + 1, 2, 3, 4 to change rotation stepping EDIT: You can also use the arrow keys to rotate the held selection in 90 degree increments, very helpful and a lot faster than switching to rotation mode on the pin (as I also just saw you do) EDIT 2: Also, the part snap feature works very good with most Technic parts in the library. I don't know how long you've been working on that assembly, but it could easily be built in less than a minute, gears alligned perfectly and all Edited August 26, 20159 yr by D3K
August 26, 20159 yr Author I am still getting use too it I will get the hang of it eventually (I have a HND in CADD so I can use quit a lot of different software).
August 26, 20159 yr I'm watching it yeah! But it's obviously slow! But I don't understand what you mean when you say "you may even learn something"
August 26, 20159 yr Just throwing a couple of helpful hints in your direction Also (depending on what you're used with), you might find it helpful to go into the View menu and select "spin" for rotation control instead of "trackball" I too have used a lot of CAD (mainly Creo Parametric), and see very few similarities to Lego CAD software (except that you build something in 3D ) EDIT I'm watching it yeah! But it's obviously slow! But I don't understand what you mean when you say "you may even learn something" Maybe he meant he'd may even learn something Anyway, I'll check back in a couple of hours, hope to see some good progress both in the build and use of the software! How long do you plan to keep going? Edited August 26, 20159 yr by D3K
August 26, 20159 yr Maybe he meant he'd may even learn something Also tell us a bit more about what kind of truck you building! I'll check it time to time aswel! Seems fun!
August 26, 20159 yr Author It defiantly is slow it would be quicker in mlcad or LDD I guess. Softwear I have used: MLCAD SR3D LDD AutoCad Inventor 3DMAX Blender photoshop illustrator I plan on going the full day,I am going for a 6x4 truck Edited August 26, 20159 yr by Alasdair Ryan
August 26, 20159 yr Oh cm'on switch to LDD/ SR3 then! It will be faster and nicer to watch!!! I think I'll do something like that aswell one day! I'm enjoying watching you!
August 26, 20159 yr I say keep going with LDcad, it's quick to get a hang of it! Believe me, I have used MLcad a lot as well, and find LDcad to be probably ten times faster, and I am by no means an expert! But seriously; have a look into my suggestions, as I'm sure you'll find some of them extremely helpful and time saving. You can switch effortlessly between snap/no snap
August 26, 20159 yr I say keep going with LDcad, it's quick to get a hang of it! Believe me, I have used MLcad a lot as well, and find LDcad to be probably ten times faster, and I am by no means an expert! True if you know how! I'm not familiar with LDcad, does it work well with Lpub?
August 26, 20159 yr True if you know how! I'm not familiar with LDcad, does it work well with Lpub? As mentioned, it is a lot faster than MLcad, but if you plan to make instructions, there are some things you need to keep in mind. While it features stepping, .mpd support for submodels, etc, as far as I know, it doesn't have the "list" from MLcad (at least the version I use, but from what I understand, this has been implemented in a newer build?), nor the rotation step function. But I found it easy to build and step it in LDcad, and then use MLcad (or you can do it in LPub, if you're familiar with that) to rotation step. When I make instructions, I tend to export all from LPub as pictures, and then use MS PowerPoint or Publisher to arrange the final .pdf (makes it easy to add arrows, some helpful text, not having to dive too far into the more advanced functions of LPub). But I guess it all depends on how you prefer to work yourselves. If you already spent a lot of time becoming an expert in LPub, I don't see why not to use that knowledge to its full extent @Alasdair It's good to see progress already! Watching your stream reminds me very much of when I started using it, and how different I use it now Most notably, I used the 2D function a lot in the beginning, but now I hardly use it at all! Good luck, this is very interesting! Edited August 26, 20159 yr by D3K
August 27, 20159 yr Author I am now getting used to it a lot more now,I have changed the design a bit from yesterday. You can follow me live for day two now. https://www.youtube.com/user/Alasdairryan/live Edited August 27, 20159 yr by Alasdair Ryan
August 28, 20159 yr Author Day three is just about to get under way I hope you can join me for some more building. http://www.youtube.com/user/Alasdairryan/live
August 28, 20159 yr anybody else want to watch, you can here me and alasdair on skype he designs his truck.
August 29, 20159 yr Author Day four is about to get under way, thanks goes to Allanp last night,as we got closer to finish the chassis. http://www.youtube.com/user/Alasdairryan/live
September 1, 20159 yr Author After two days break day five of the virtual truck build is about to get under way. http://www.youtube.com/user/Alasdairryan/live
April 6, 20168 yr Author Though you might like to know I am live streaming currently I am going to start on the cab/body. http://www.youtube.com/user/Alasdairryan/live
April 6, 20168 yr So Ryan as I've followed this since the beginning I'm curious to see how it evolves! Not sure about the suspensions choices....front indipendent and the rear ones don't convince me either But it looks nice all together...really can't wait for the cabin! Are you making something that exists in real life? or will be a generic truck?
April 6, 20168 yr Author I am also working on a bulldozer. Not sure about the suspensions choices....front indipendent and the rear ones don't convince me either That was Allanp's idea blame him not me.
April 6, 20168 yr I am also working on a bulldozer. That was Allanp's idea blame him not me. LOL that's fine then...he doesn't know how to build  I'm only joking! So what truck will it be then?
April 6, 20168 yr EDIT 2: Also, the part snap feature is very good with most Technic parts in the library. I don't know how long you've been on that assembly, but it could easily be built in less than a minute, gears alligned perfectly and all Is this part snap feature only in LDcad? I tried looking for this feature in MLcad, but couldn't find it.
