Actor Builder Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 xon67, I just now noticed Bob's Kabob stand! It's perfect! I would love an LDD file of that, if you could. kibosh, I think we'd all love to see your finished product of Emmett's Apartment! I hope you make a thread for it when it's finished...Or better yet, a Work in Progress thread! Quote
Lind Whisperer Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 These are beautiful. :cry_happy: :cry_happy: :cry_happy: Quote

I think a WIP topic would be great to see, too. Lind Whisperer: Thanks for the comment! Quote

This is exactly what I want to do. While recreating it exactly from the movie would be nice, it's more important to me to have it fit within the standard modular framework. Quote
BlackStar Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 (edited) Is panic a username? I don't see any posts by them... Hey kibosh, yes it's me. It's a bit of a story, but I'm BlackStar of the demogroup Edge of Panic, so that's the confusion =) Indeed I linked to the building before but it got edited by a mod. Anyhow, I've been closely following this topic and it's really brilliant. I am anxious to see more buildings :D on my ideas page there are two versions, one is like the movie, the second one is a modular I built. So Xon67, what are your next plans? Currently I'm planning to do Emmet's mech fullsize version, but it's hard to reverse engineer it since it uses multiple SNOT techniques and appears only very briefly in the movie. Xon67 Posted October 17, 2015 Author Posted October 17, 2015 Hi BlackStar, There are only a few more buildings left in Emmet's neighborhood for me to recreate at this point. I have an interior of Emmet's apartment and a mostly-completed Batwing: However, multiple versions of each have already been posted by others, so I didn't feel I needed to post mine. I've been thinking about a few more builds from the construction site and possibly the downtown area. I actually have screengrabs in preparation for creating for Emmet's Mech. I thought it would be cool to build from the time I saw it in the movie. But as you mentioned, it's all built sideways with SNOT techniques. It's definitely a more complex design. The videogame intructions are for the smaller version and don't help. Should we each work on ours at the same time and share notes? We might get further a lot faster that way. We each might get stuck at different places and can help each other out--or you could work on an arm while I work on a leg. What are your thoughts? Quote
Xon67 Posted October 18, 2015 Author Posted October 18, 2015 Couldn't get Emmet's mech out of my head. Had to start it. Here's my WIP on it's foot. EmmetsMechFoot by Xon 67, on Flickr Quote
Hobbythom Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 This is a wonderful undertaking you have started! Tip of the head to you good sir! Quote
BlackStar Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 (edited) Hy Xon67, yes that would be cool! Here is what I have so far: https://dl.dropboxus...397458/mech.lxf I started this a long time ago, what I did what create slow-motion versions of the two parts in the movie where the mech is most visible. The first one is when Emmet is assembling it, and the second one is when he meets up with the rest of the team, and does a full 360 turn. Also, I found some still shots on this website: http://www.expandedc...lego-movie.html that show the bottom. When Emmet assembles it, there are numerous parts shown: 2512 2653 2780 2950 30094 30394 32324 3649 3649 3795 3795 3823 4151 43121 43710 47758 47758 50163 55817 56145 56891 56891 61905 6580 6583 6589 67408x 87407 87408 These parts are already in my LXF. Please DO post your Emmet's Apartment! I am very curious to compare it against mine. (I think I put like 40 hours in that thing to get it right) :D Edited October 18, 2015 by BlackStar Quote
Actor Builder Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Wow! I can't wait to see your collaborative Construct-O-Mech! Make sure to share the LDD file please! Quote
Xon67 Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 (edited) While work continues on other builds, I thought I'd give a peek at how I pieced the Green Grocer together into what was shown in the movie. As I said previously, I first created a 4-story Green Grocer and mirrored it left-to-right. Then I sliced off pieces to create additional parts of the building. I also created a type of armature to work out the angles between the various pieces (shown in the picture below) using bricks arranged in the dimensions of the major pieces of the building. This allowed me to move large assemblies of bricks more easily into place by having them "snap" onto pieces of the armature (while also helping to identify collisions between bricks so they could be removed). Without the armature, I found that LDD would try to align bricks on its own in ways that I didn't intend (at strange angles and incorrect levels). _movie green grocer assemble by Xon 67, on Flickr Edited October 20, 2015 by Xon67 Quote

Actor Builder Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 Oh my G O S H, I am so excited for this Construct-O-Mech! I might just end up being the crazy guy that tries to build it in real life. Quote
BlackStar Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 (edited) Wow, job well done Xon67! Great job on identifying that slope, I used 2x2x2 for this and I knew it was wrong since I came 2 studs short on top op of it. I did not imagine that the part would be so huge! Also very cool that you use the same trick for random placement as I did (it took me a while before I found out you could move parts this way.), by using parts as an X, Y and Z arrow. (They should really add this in a normal way in 5.0) Anyway. How shall we continue? Currently I do not have super much time, but assembling and reverse engineering this would be extremely cool! We could even submit it to Ideas as a copro, but seeing how well my apartment and building did and considering that the build is now already at 500 parts, I take it it will require 2000-3000 parts in total as a rough estimate. However, since I built both the apartment and the building, that's not going to stop me, and I guess I won't be the only one. So what I'd like to do is use this LXF, then post it back on sunday with additions I did, and we round-trip it a bit until we're done. I guess you have more to do, and I can give one more, possibly the most insane, suggestion if you run out of work waiting for me =) Metal Beard's Sea Cow, fullsize. :D Or, the saloon interior/exterior =) Edited October 22, 2015 by BlackStar Quote
Terrasher Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 All the buildings here are incredible. Although, the one that stands out the most to me is that "large building" made mostly from GG chunks. The angled build and street are incredible well executed! I wish I had half the skill and imagination (and bricks ) these master builders have! Quote
Xon67 Posted October 23, 2015 Author Posted October 23, 2015 (edited) BlackStar: Those slopes stopped me cold until I looked at enough frame grabs to convince myself that the slopes were three studs deep. Than I spent more time combing the parts library looking for the appropriate piece. When I found it, I about did a backflip, I was so excited I found it. That's one of the things I enjoy about re-creating these builds--figuring out the designer's thought processes and identifying the pieces and techniques they use. Like you said, when you get time, build some more and re-post. We can keep passing it back and forth. Terrasher: Thanks for the comment! I appreciate it. Here's one final pic of the "large building" with the comparison to the original set. _movie green grocer compare by Xon 67, on Flickr Edited October 23, 2015 by Xon67 Quote

I'm curious about the furniture design, I'm starting to plan my own layout hopefully in the style of Bricksburg. All I know is it'll have a train line, modulars, and Winter Village buildings on either end. I'm hoping to kit bash sets to start building out the buildings like Emmet's apartment, the interior is so well designed. Quote
BlackStar Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 (edited) Hey Lego Dino 500, here is the link to my apartment version: https://www.dropbox....rtment.lxf?dl=0 I was on Ideas on this page https://ideas.lego.c...s/79366/updates You can also get all parts standalone here, which makes it easier to build. On the Mech: I wanted to work on it today, however, my girlfriend and I got into a pretty serious car accident yesterday. Luckily everybody walked away, but 3 cars are totalled :/ Cool version of the apartment! Also, the Sea Cow is looking pretty mighty as well :D Nice job! Edited October 25, 2015 by BlackStar Quote
