Set name: Obi-Wan Kenobi

Set number: 75109

Pieces: 83

Price: $24.99 | £xx.xx | €xx.xx

Release date: 2015

Obi-Wan Kenobi (for purposes of this review we will now just call him Kenobi.) was one of the two more controversial figures of this wave, because, like Luke, Lego is trying to take what is normally a human and turn him into an action figure using parts primarily designed for robotic beings. So did Lego manage to bring Kenbobi to justice in his plastic form? Let's find out.

Packaging and Contents

Box Front

20913104428_89383622d5_b.jpg

Kenobi is in a generic pose here, and it looks to me like Utapau is set as the background (where we can also see Kenobi and Grievous fighting.)

Box Back

20478385694_a392da71bb_b.jpg

Some people read the back of their cereal box in the morning, others read the back of a toy box. Or, something like that. Set highlights are featured here, like the extra lightsaber hilt and his ability to hold a weapon- that's right hold a weapon. Things have come a long way haven't they? Although to be fair I probably should have looked at the back of the box before doing these reviews, because i'm now realizing I didn't actually place the hands around the hilt like that in any of my reviews.

Contents

20914199049_124b729dab_b.jpg

Inside we have a loose torso the lightsaber blade, instructions and two bags of parts, and a bag with a cape.

New and Interesting parts

Tan pieces

20950363178_b683f9ff63_b.jpg

We have the new torso piece with printed robes, the 6m shell in tan (also seen in Grievous), and those random Technic plates that are making there rounds in these sets.

White pieces

21128082152_6418b7884b_b.jpg

We also have the new shoulder armor and calf armor in white, and a beast fin in white!

Cape

20479910663_5d18dc6982_b.jpg

Kenobi and Vader both use the same cape, and of course Kenobi's comes in a nice brown. This is a new cape, with a hole for a balljoint and two Technic holes, and is not the same cape that came with Furno XL.

Head

21074791226_4bb74ee4ac_b.jpg

Unlike Luke, I think Kenobi's headsculpt is absolutely fantastic. As a big fan of the animated Clone Wars show, this really strikes home with me and is a perfect blend of bringing a human face into plastic form.

Building Process

Leg

21108686441_779cd06a8c_b.jpg

Kenobi's legs start off fairly tall, utilizing the beast fins as calf armor, and also adding on a set of hip attachments to place the extra lightsaber on.

Legs

The extra hilt is a nice touch. I didn't mention this in any of the other reviews, but notice that his feet have beams to fill them out a bit more.

Arms

The kama is a nice touch and really helps makes him feel more alive and less robotic.

Finished Build

Front (Without cape)

Even without a cape he looks pretty solid.

Back (Without cape)

Back armoring is there, although it would have been nice to get the piece in tan reused from Grievous.

Front View

Kenobi looks great- I love how the cape is tucked undernearth his armor, it wraps nicely around his shoulders and neck.

Profile View

Even though you can't see his calf armor, it is in fact there and helps his profile view look filed out. It's also worth noting how nicely, again, the cape wraps around him.

Back View

Well, it's a cape, the back of his head and feet.

You want to go home and rethink your life

20479899503_feec7ab861_b.jpg

Like all of the other Star Wars figures he poses quite well. I can't stress enough how awesomely the cape flows with his poses.

Hello there

20479898283_3191aace82_b.jpg

Now would be a good time for open faced hands...

BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKU- oh wait, Star Wars quotes.

You know besides his price tag, i'm not really sure what to complain about here.

Size Comparison

21131997762_28bd0effc7_b.jpg

Like the other figures, he is quite tall, especially because he has the longer shins to compensate for the calf armor.

Overall

Now unless I'm missing something, this set is 25% more expensive than Jango, Cody, and Luke, which is a $5 increase in price. So the cape is $5? I guess if Grievous had a cape made to match his size the set would be upwards of $50. However in my opinion, just adding a cape to this set does not make it worth that insanely high price tag for what you get. He is an awesome figure and worth looking into if you are a fan of the character, but he is a perfect exaple of how increased licensing cost can really start to make you question what you are buying.

This guy's probably the Star Wars constraction set I want the most. It's a great-looking set in its own right but also

As for the price, don't forget that he has both the new shoulder armor, very solid back armor, and armor on the back of his calves. So despite having a lower piece count than some of the sets that have more Technic-based weapons and gadgets, he has a lot more meat to him than most of the other $20 sets.

I compare him most to Luke, since both have the same leg and body design- Instead of Luke's handcuffs and pistol, you get the loincloth, a cape and the new shoulder armor. I don't know how much of Luke's price the gun and cuffs are, but add that to the $5 and that's what extra there is to Kenobi. I'm not saying his price being more than the other three $20 figures isn't justified, but they are still on the pricey side as a whole- even with the sculpted heads.

Obi-Wan looks terrific, and they managed to capture the human look without venturing too far into the uncanny valley. It's a little disappointing that his price is so high. Over here, he is the same price as Mask Maker v Skull Grinder at $40AUD, and I don't think it's a fair price for what you get. Especially considering Grievous is just $10AUD more.

Still I'm keeping my eye on him, and will get him if a right discount comes along. I would really love one of him; Obi-Wan has always been one of my favourite Star Wars characters and this is a pretty well done representation.

This set is the perfect thing for getting my boyfriend into CCBS...

Really lovely model. Was not expecting the back armour!

They just don't feel like Lego to me.

Well, it is. System is not the be-all-and-end-all of Lego, y'know.

I think you're on the wrong board.

Because he stated his opinion?

Say I went to a forum for Cabbage enthusiasts, and stated that I hate Cabbage, and never want to eat it. I say that it's not as good as Lettuce, or Kale - it's just not a real green vegetable. I've never really been interested in Cabbage, but I still felt the need to tell people that are interested in it, that I'm not.

A bit silly, right?
