I don't think you need an expensive DSLR if your primary goal is LEGO photography.

I like the Panasonic line of Travel Zoom cameras. They are relatively inexpensive and fit in my shirt pocket for travel. Most cameras today have automatic functions that can out perform many who choose manual settings. The Panasonic camera I mentioned has very good automatic settings and fairly easy to use manual settings. Most travel zoom type cameras have similar capabilities.

I believe a tripod (which you can get for $25) and good lighting are at least as important as the camera. The reflector that fred67 mentioned can be had for under $10 and properly used, with some sort of diffusion to prevent glare will do just fine.
