Jern92 Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 Oh wow the back actually looks pretty bad IMHO. Those large tan panels argh. Couldn't they have added another layer outside, or used normal bricks? Quote
dr_spock Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I guess they assume you'll display the back against a the wall of your house or shelf so it is not visible. Oh well, there is always room to MOD it to your personal tastes. 4000 pixels? Looks like 1000 pixels to me..... That's because your web browser resized the picture for display on your screen size. I can tell it is 4000 pixels because it took forever to load on my slow Internet connection. Quote

Couldn't they have added another layer outside, or used normal bricks? I think they may have considered that, but it may have causes a problem when opening the hinges or not have allowed it to open all the way. Quote
Elrond Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I guess they assume you'll display the back against a the wall of your house or shelf so it is not visible. Oh well, there is always room to MOD it to your personal tastes. You can't put it against a wall or you won't be able to open it completely. As Aegis suggested, it has to do with how the building opens up. I guess the designer had to choose between either saving the outside or the inside. Quote
Xyver Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 That back really is horrible. Considering the rest of the building was double walled, you would have thought they'd do that to the back as well. Will definitely have to work out a way to fix that before I put this on my layout as it will be visible. I actually may squish the whole building so that it sits 8 studs from the front rather than 5 so that it's inline with all my other buildings. It won't matter if I lose the opening functions or the interior layout as that won't be seen anyway (which is a shame as there is a lot of great details). So that will make it easier to put an extra row of bricks at the back Those brown doors on the lockers look great and will no doubt come in handy for other builds, hopefully they will pop up in other sets as they would make a great wooden front door for a house. There is obviously a line of tiles below the top floor, but only on the outside. I wonder why they are used instead of plates as they don't go around the full building so its not to take the level off. Quote

What a fortuitous set-up for that joke. As for the set itself, I quite like it, all in all. The fire escape looks amazing and I'm glad to see it. The back does look quite hideous, though when opened, it allows the column to maintain the same color scheme as the rest of the interior, so there is that, I guess. I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting, but the interior feels a bit sparse to me, though I do like it, and I love all the allusions to various scenes in the films. When it was first announced, with the price and piece count, I was immediately on-board, in my mind. Now that I've seen it, though, I'm a bit more hesitant. It kind of reminds me of what happened with the Helicarrier: I loved the idea, but the execution wasn't what I wanted. I like the GBHQ much more than the Helicarrier though, and it's still pretty high on my list, but there's some uncertainty. Currently, I don't own any set that retailed for over $200, because, as the price goes up, so do my standards and it's harder for my opinion to get from "good" to "great" to "holy !#% I can't believe that's real" for x amount of dollars. All that nagging and whining aside, I still really like it a lot and will probably get it, especially once I see it "in the brick". That and the Stay-Puft dimensions set. That minifig is GORGEOUS. legonerd54321 Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 Any idea if we WILL get a designer video for this set? Quote
The Jersey Brick Guy Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I am going to buy 2 of these sets because I am obsessed with Ghostbusters. (Open 1, Keep 1 closed) Quote
WetWired Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I am going to buy 2 of these sets because I am obsessed with Ghostbusters. (Open 1, Keep 1 closed) I was thinking the same, but now I'll probably get 2 open the 2nd to make it larger like my original one. Quote
CM4Sci Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I am going to buy 2 of these sets because I am obsessed with Ghostbusters. (Open 1, Keep 1 closed) TWO?! Wish I had that kind of money, haha Quote
kelceycoe Posted November 13, 2015 Author Posted November 13, 2015 TWO?! Wish I had that kind of money, haha I actually was going to get 2 to modify it so the car could fit better but I think it would cause more problems with all the leftover space I'd have and just be more demanding of more money. Then again, I could make Janine and Louis Ghostbusters and they'd have their separate bedroom to share with Winston. If I were to do it I'd buy one and buy the second without the minifigs. I already have 2 Ecto-1s so I could modify it so all four get fit and all 4 of their proton packs (video coming soon) if you don't mind them sitting in a straight line inside lol. Quote
toasted_one Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I agree that the back is hideous and what I am about to say is an eye-roller comment but this does look like the backside of a typical New York City building. I highly doubt they were trying to achieve that. Quote
8BrickMario Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 The back is awful, but I like the set too much to be bothered by it. It won't even be visible while on display, so it's like an uneven Christmas tree. Just turn it to the wall like there isn't a problem. Quote
legonerd54321 Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 What image shows the back are we talking about? Quote
LEGODalekbuster523 Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 Try looking at it next to an actual 1000-piece set and then get back to us. ;) Whatever. Think I'll stick to the Dimensions Ghostbusters packs - way more affordable IMO. Quote
kelceycoe Posted November 13, 2015 Author Posted November 13, 2015 What image shows the back are we talking about? It's on LEGO's Facebook page. The best way to mod this is is to extend the back by another square baseplate the offices are on. You can pretty much figure the rest from there. You can easily turn this into a modular with minor modifications. You'll need another baseplate, put your modular on this new baseplate, remove part of the sidewalk first from the GB Firehouse (left side recommended) and add the bricks with holes into the Firehouse. You will need to make sure they align with the modular with studs. With little know-how its much simpler than you think. Quote
Hobbestimus Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 While we're on the subject of modifications, I'm not crazy about the included official Ghost Trap. But assuming that it's a sticker like the rest of the set, it's easy enough to make one like this from it: Purist Trap MOC by Hobbestimus, on Flickr Quote
TheLegoDr Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 The problem I have with the back, is the way my shelves are in my LEGO room. They are deep enough to fit a standard modular, but something like this would have to be with the long side facing out. Now the back could still be up against the corner wall so as to not be seen, and then just leave the one side open all of the time for viewing. I don't know..I will see what happens. Quote
6ix Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I'm not worried about the back of the building... more about the size. I think it will *just* fit in my display cabinet, if at all Quote
larsy Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I'm not a ghostbusters fan but this looks amazing. Won't get it though. Quote

I got all four with equipment to fit in my unmodified version. You shouldn't need to modify it, unless you just want to. It is LEGO, so modify away! Edited November 13, 2015 by Actor Builder Quote

legonerd54321 Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 (edited) Oh.....that back. Now I see why it's really ugly. Time to fire up Bricklink when it comes out. Also, a little nice play feature I noticed on the back of the box is that you can put the ghost trap inside the containment unit. I like it. Edited November 14, 2015 by legonerd54321 Quote
CM4Sci Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 I don't see why you guys are complaining, you won't even see it if you display it properly. Quote
