---Vertea--- Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 MAJOR WIN. I agree! Though I like Elliot's work, Gallagher isn't bad. I look forward to his rendition of the Glatorians as well as the teaser in the back of 'The Rising' Quote

Ikki o' Moopyville Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 (edited) The image is *okay* -- it's the caption that shows Greg's lack of talent. Oh, and no words can describe how bad Elliot was. :-P -Ikk Edited August 31, 2008 by Ikki o' Moopyville Quote

Ikki o' Moopyville Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Several things... the proportions on his characters were way off, he tried to hard to make them look like the sets, which made them undynamic and boring, and eveything was 'shiny' -- from the sets to the buildings in Metru Nui, they all had that metallic feel. His drawings of the environments were also very, very dull. No, Carlos D'Anda all the way, baby! -Ikk Quote

Carlos D'Anda is my favorite artist, and second is Leigh Gallagher. ^_^ Quote
The Crazy One Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 I like the comic but did pohatu manage to survive bieng blasted? Quote
Pigbrick Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 (edited) Gallagher is a good artist but still it lacks any emotion or feel of strength. Carlos had amazing dramatic shots (thank you Ikki o' Moopyville for the comparison shot) but his drawings also gave emotional feel to the characters. His Toa weren't set copies but instead changed to give them a more human quality (Head sizes were smaller, shoulders were bigger, characters showed emotion through their eyes, etc.). I really haven't seen too many of the artist other than Sayger that have done this (Sayger did great villains but I felt his heroes were bland). Elliot... was awful. But please understand that Elliot is an inker and not a penciler when it comes to comics. Almost all his comic related work is that of an inker. I think he was kind of thrown into the position of a penciler when Carlos left. Also, did anyone else other than me feel sick from reading the dialogue in the new comic? Antroz: Not good enough -- I am truly one with the ship. Pohatu: If I catch up with you, "one" is going to be none. uhg... I know it's for kids but still... Edited August 31, 2008 by Pigbrick Quote
VBBN Posted August 31, 2008 Author Posted August 31, 2008 That stuart guy was crap as well. A very interesting comic-How did they change forms? Quote
Pencoin Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 <sighs> Adaptive armour and transformation power. Quote
Ikki o' Moopyville Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 (edited) Yep, they adapted to the vehicles. And Pigbrick speaks the truth! Carlos had a wonderful mix of set-style and actual 'living' drawings. Sayger went too much towards his own style which somewhat messed up the character design, while Elliot tried to draw awkwardly posed photographs of the sets. Another problem with Gallagher is the sleep-inducing colors. That's where Sayger excelled: he really captured the glow and sparkle of lava caves, storms, even eyes. Gallagher... I'd rather just have it in black and white. Actually, THAT'S no bad idea... -Ikk Edited August 31, 2008 by Ikki o' Moopyville Quote
Wrinkledlion X Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Gallagher's not in charge of the colors, the colorist is. Quote

Oh, and I had no clue Elliot wasn't the penciller, so... credit to THAT guy(Carlos, I think?). I did not much care for Sayger's style-real sloppy on the characters. The Piraka were fine, the Barraki were decent, but the toa just looked wispy and childish. Quote
Lord Thrawn Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Actually I believe Gallagher does the pencilling and colouring. Quote
Wrinkledlion X Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 (edited) Doesn't really make a difference to me either way. I'm color-blind so I've learned not to be picky. Personally, I think it looks quite nice. EDIT: And I suppose it's partially due just to this year's location. Everything (Especially the first half of the year's location) is colored pretty blandly in most portrayals. Lots of grey. Edited August 31, 2008 by Gunnar Quote
S-N Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Actually I believe Gallagher does the pencilling and colouring. Nope, Ulises Arreola does the coloring. Quote
Ikki o' Moopyville Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Dead on with the locations being bland in color -- that's a major reason I'm so excited about next year. Ever since Metru Nui, the settings have been boring, so lacking in detail. Every time there was some potential -- murky swamps, undersea forests -- it got blown to bits. I miss the dozens of images showing how cool landscape the islands had. -Ikk Quote
The Crazy One Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Couldn't of said it better Ikki, you share my opinions. I thought Metru Nui worked but ever since the piraka on voya nui, bionicle has never been the same.... Until now. Quote

Tyranide Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 I really like the Karda Nui swamp, not really bland IMO. :P But Gallagher isn't showing it very much(( That picture with Krika rising out of the mud in Ignition13 beginning was cool and EPIC, definitely best what Leigh drew for whole Ignition series up to date (I wanna see how he show Mata Nui! ^_^) Mostly pictures in these comics are so bland 'cause main action's happening in the air. Let's all hope 'til the end of this year and deal with what we have (it's better that Sayger's work anyway... I mean, why look at beautiful (sometimes) landscapes if only thing that I personally can see is awfully drawn characters? In 2007 comics, all characters looked like they were made of sticks.), and in 2009 we'll be standing on the ground again. Think if we'll be in whole new universe next year, we'll have many shots of places. Quote
Wrinkledlion X Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Yeah, I actually like the colors a lot, but I can see why others don't. I think they're kind of surreal and cool. They look just like the places in my dreams. Anyways, while I agree that part of the problem last year was Sayger getting lazy, for the most part I think it's had to do with the sets' gimmick each year. This year, though infinitely better, has a very photogenic location, but because the set-designers slapped wings and jets on everyone, we have to see the awesome illustrations in between shots of clouds. When we do see them, though, they're pretty darn cool. Last year the problem was even worse, because a deep-sea theme, combined with Sayger's laziness, meant most of the time we were swimming in front of a blank blue background. Occasionally we did get some good landcape images, though, like here and here. (And on rare occasions a cool character-illustration.) Quote

hewkii9 Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 (edited) Yeah, if Gallagher could only draw the swamp like the animations on Bionicle.com.... I'm actually feeling the old-school feeling again because of Bionicle.com now. Sure, we've still got heaps of explaining of things, the technobabble from Agents and Mars Mission seems like its trickling into the big vehicles [X-9 Blaster, tri-arm, potato, potahtoe], and more silly names and Makuta than you can shake a stick at ['not based on anything' Miserix, Felnas, anyone?], but the website is making me feel the mystery again. The little story recaps remind me of Takua's reports whenever a new Bohrok animation came out, and the placeholderish images are really good [the Codrex, Ignika on his board, that iconic Mata Nui surrounded by clouds, and then desert] really work. I think the problem with the websites between '05 and '07 were that they were chock-full of crappy ads and 'games', but the site's got that mysterious feeling again. Even the videos are better. There's two of them up now, and only one has a stupid 'meet the crapika and shoot the laser-bears' voiceover- the other has that good epic feeling, and the Codrex opening in it reminds me of Mangaia.
