Ah yes, those legit pictures posted on BZP. Fact is, I was hoping ever since the prototype pictures in the dealers catalog came out that the Phantoka might look better when quality pictures came out, but alas nothing has changed. I think it's really those dumb belly housed energy balls that kills the whole line - WHOSE idea was THAT? :-|

On the positive side, Antroz's mask looks great, and I'm not so upset about the Toa Nuva now that we know about the orgin of their new looks. Climate adapting armor suits that cover over their old armor? Very cool! *sweet*

Unfortunately, Kopaka suffers from a serious lack of weaponry. No shield, no sword, just one of those crud-launchers. That makes him worse than Kongu - only launchers and not an extra one to conpensate for his lack of melee weapons. |-/

Then there's Pohatu: I don't like the mask that much, but I REALLY don't like his weapons: those propeller thingys have to be the worst idea for a non launcher weapon ever. Not because they aren't bad for attacking, but because they are his only method of flying, meaning when he's in the air, he can't attack at all without falling to the ground. :-|

Rant over for now. :-P

I actually like the launchers, I think it is a neat way of doing launchers without a gun-like weapon (which is the newest trend.) I also think they go pretty well with the Phantoka's design scheme.

I know! So far that's the coolest thing about 2008, IMO.

Yeah, he's got nothing but the bayonet. But on the bright side, that makes him the Toa that the new launcher looks best on.

Really? I always thought that he could possibly stay in flight with only one propellor on, I didn't see him as necessarily needing both. That means he can fly, shoot people with his launcher, and slash them with his other propellor. Plus, it is a new concept, neither a jetpack nor wings. Plus for innovation! :-)

I like these new pics, although it's a shame that the Chirox one is so small. I can't wait to see what he looks like. So far, I am going for all the Nuva so far, along with Toa Ignika, Chirox, and Antroz. I'm just not a big fan of Vamprah. I think it's his mask; other than that, he's okay. But the mask destroys him for me.

Spoiler (highlight):

Their mutation is that they no longer have bodies and are left only as heads and spines (kind of like sea serpants). After they nearly kill the Mahri, it is implied that Axonn has killed them (referenced, not shown).

Ugh. That's...I don't know how to put it. Ugly? Freaky? Creepy? I mean, they weren't my favourite villains (though I loved Zaktan's personality, he ended up being a puppet like the others- afterall, the only BIONICLE villains that aren't puppets in the hands of some other major villain are the Barraki, TSO and the Makuta), that's an horrible way to end up.

Check the new pics.

They look great! Pohatu not so much, but the others rock...Chirox especially. I really hope he features yellow eyes, since they currently don't exist in Toa Metru brain/eye form.

Relax you guys, Greg said somewhere on BZP that Axonn took the Piraka to a place they could do no harm and be interrogated by the Order. :-P So as awesome as it would be, the Piraka ain't dead just yet.

Oh, and that graphic novel is likely 'just' a compilation of the old ones.

Some of them look good, but Kopaka Phantoka needs new forearms before anything else can be done. It is lucky he is in Metru Grey, it shouldn't be hard to find some shorter peices. He has the Monkey syndrome some of the sets have suffered from. Read my lips Lego: Hands do not look natural when dangling below the knees.

Why would they include another new artist if it was simply a compilation?

I was hoping for him to CUT THEM TO LITTLE PIECES WITH HIS GIANT AXE.

Ahem...sorry. :-$

Digging the chest cavity. The rest is a little unimpressive though.

Is it me, or is the new blaster not as compact as it looked in the first pics?

Not sure why I thought they were smaller...

I LOVE pohatu's hand clamps. Most useful looking. Disgustingly so.

Likewise, the new forearm pieces are awesome... so many things I see them for... and bless my megablocking eyes, but are those forearms also twins? SYMMETRICAL twins?

:)

Kopaka's nothing to look at... save for a cute silver blade weapon (1 piece is not enough to warrant paying 9 or 10 bucks). His backpack wings are designed well, but meeeeeh.

Chirox... NOT feelin' it.

Vamprah... not a bad assortment of wing dealies.

So far, Pohatu. Winner.

I like what I see. I know they're basic, but I dun care. :-P Playability is number one for me, and these look fun. Very. Especially the riding-the-Phantoka gimmick, although it is kinda suggestive... e.e;;

Oh by the way, the Midak ammo is the same piece as the zamor sphere. But it looks like these don't fall out all the time, which is BIG plus.

And, hmm. Solek (white Matoran) is the only one with those limbs...

I think it's obvious they're no good for MOCs, no need to push it more. :P

The heads look Inika-ish, but they're compatable with Toa Metru-style masks, a.k.a. every mask in the last four years (apart from the Inika ones...)

The phantoka are shaping up to be amazing; it's the matoran I'm now worried about...

Look at the pictures and you'll see they appear to be some limbs slapped on a one piece body with a head attachment. If this is true, we're looking at less than 20 pieces per matoran...>.<

However, that aside, those arms (the ones on Radiak and Gavla exclusively, and on the upper limbs of Tanma/lower limbs of Photok) appear to be great for MOCing - will certainly give custom bodies a new look =P

I am really liking the Phantoka and Matoran, especially Toa Ignika (as seen on the last page of the .pdf instructions that Jinzoningen linked to.) !

My thoughts:

Chirox: Easily the best of the Makuta Phantoka, IMO. He has style, the Hordika legs actually look good on him, I like his aerodynamic feel and I love his mask. I am also really liking the new bodies; they have style, thought I'm interested to see how they work on creations other than the Makuta. I really like the use of two-toed feet, LEGO is really taking advantage of their older pieces, I like how they slightly change them to make a completely new piece. They did this with Kalmah in 2007, the feet used to be Hordika, but they changed them slightly to look better.

Vamprah: My least favorite, solely because of his mask; personally, I just don't like it. But I have to give them credit for a very interesting design, and use of four legs. He is the first quadriped canister set in three years. Here's hoping they give us a quadriped Titan again! 2007 lacked one of those.

Pohatu Nuva: Hooray for the return of functions! Okay, so it's a spinny stick, but it IS a start! Combined with what GregF said will be more advanced functions later in 2008 and Karzahni this year, functions seem to be returning ever so slightly! I also love Pohatu's mask. The only problem with the new Nuva is their design similarity to the Inika; I had hoped for new armor. However, the Nuva really do improve on the Inika designs. They've bulked them up, given them more STYLE, and still retained some little bits from the original 2002 Nuva. Hey, Pohatu is still the shortest. And I love his mask; it looks like the Vahi, which is one of my favorite masks of all time.

Kopaka Nuva: I find his design an improvement over the Inika. Notice, oh, I don't know, BACK ARMOR! Long have I waited for back armor. It first appeared with Brutaka, then Vezon had it slightly, the Mahri had it but they lost front armor in exchange. Now Kopaka has that Inika shoulder piece as back armor, which I love! I also like his wings; they are very solid, nicely fitting of a Toa of Ice. I really like his little bayonet piece, and the best thing about him is that the Midak fits very nicely. I am glad to see that his hands really do attach to his bayonet, I had feared that it was merely a pose on the canister front and he held it in some ugly position in real life.

I am glad to see the Matoran have two body types, further increasing their value. Photok looks ugly now, but Solek, Radiak, and Tanma look superb. Gavla and Kirop are also nice. I am intersting in the new heads, I wonder if it would be possible to attach them to the Phantoka Makuta, this Chirox can have those big red eyes like he does in the poster.

It is a shame they let down on pieces and use pre-bent pieces, as Jinzoningen said, but then again these pieces look really nice and come in a great variety, so it may not be so bad after all.

What do you guys think of Toa Ignika?

Well, now it is time to clear things here...

All these new pics of Matoran and instructions were found by me and friends on LEGO.com.

They can be found here.

Nice work, Tyranide! Did you find them by searching one by one with the multi-digit codes? That must have been a lot of work.

I also bring news from BZP! Shop at Home has now uploaded pics of the canister sets and Toa Ignika. They are not available, but if you go to the Matoran links (the ones Tyranide got), and type in the four-digit set number of the canister sets or Ignika, you can see three pics of each one from Shop at Home.

To change the pic view, change the second digit pair to 13, 23, or 33.
