Zarkan Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 Well, I finally got to open Lewa Nuva, since my mom had purchased him for me a few weeks ago (at my request) but I had to pay the money off before I could open it. :-P The final analysis? He's the best of the Phantoka, hands down. No real design or logic flaws at all, unlike Pohatu and Kopaka, and he has a lot of cool pieces and a decent mask. Plus, he's just plain fun to play with! *y* On a side note, has anyone else here noticed that the 2008 joints are stiffer when connected? I mean, stiffer in that they don't move quite as loosely. Because this new way of doing the pieces may have been the reason why one of my Tanma leg joints has partly snapped. >:-( Quote

And one of my Vamprah joints just snapped :(. I think I'm anti-new-joint. What was wrong with the old ones? And the new ones remind me of the Bionicle bootlegs. Quote
JINZONINGEN73 Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 Out of curiosity, what color are these parts that are snapping which some of you are experiencing in the current sets? I kinda' thought it was a Lime / Orange thing mostly. Quote
Makuta'sdarkslave Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Onua Mistika Wise and powerful, Onua Nuva challenges the Brotherhood of Makuta with his jet rockets, Nunrah ghost blaster, multi-resistant shield, and high-tech wings. Icesaber Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Out of curiosity, what color are these parts that are snapping which some of you are experiencing in the current sets?I kinda' thought it was a Lime / Orange thing mostly. Well, all of my long double-sockets in lime snapped when I took them off Hahli Mahri except one, and one of my short double-sockets on Ehlek in lime snapped. But in the new ones, it's a black short double-socket that snapped. But I've heard people saying that their orange-yellow sockets from Ignika snapped, dark bley from Solek, and a bunch of other '08 sets. So I would say it's safe to assume that in the old sockets, the problem was the new lime sockets (not the ones before like Keelerak and Nui-Rama), but in the new (and IMO inferior) sockets, it's more of a general problem that's happening to many of the new sets, regardless of color. goggleson Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Pohatu- orange just looks wrong, bad idea. Lewa-Looks too heavy, mask looks like Gali's origional :/ Kopaka-not very different from the past but looks awesome! Not sure about that massive cannon though :-X Quote

Icesaber Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Yes, I agree. It seems that the quality of Bionicle pieces has really degraded this year.... |-/ I took three different Gali hooks from different years: the blue one from Gali, the silver one from Nivawk, and the silver one from Vamprah. Vamprah's seems lower-quality plastic, a tiny bit more rubbery. It's more transparent. And it's constantly falling out. So yes, the quality is falling. Quote

Although GITD pieces are always appreciated, I think a good distribution of those is essential at least; and Krika definetely doesn't need any more brightness in my own opinion. Well, all of my long double-sockets in lime snapped when I took them off Hahli Mahri except one, and one of my short double-sockets on Ehlek in lime snapped. I would have to agree on that point also. All of my breaking joints problem consist only of lime green joints from the Mahri onwards, and also some double-sockets from Kadras, but those I really was putting into a point with a lot of pressure. About Federation of Fear: I found this episode quite entertaining, a good balance of exquisiteness, and mythology. I believe it might be the best latest text I have read that reminds me of the initial mythology felling of the storyline. And as such, I also consider the ending as great, both from the point of view of how it's told and also of its implications. Tren Krom also reminded me of the Prim concept from the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. Quote
Zarkan Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 It's easy to see why Tren Krom sounds a lot like something from classic fiction - Greg himself said that TK is in a sense his nod to H.P.Lovecraft. A giant eyed tentacled mass of tissue isn't exactly a new idea, although it's great to see something like that in Bionicle. *y* Quote

A giant eyed tentacled mass of tissue isn't exactly a new idea, although it's great to see something like that in Bionicle. *y* I don't actually have my Lovecraft books with me, but at least form the Dark Tower viewpoint, this coincidence of phrases seems to be at least interesting. Brutaka tried to close his eyes. It didn’t help. He couldn’t get the image of Tren Krom out of his mind – a writhing, crimson mass of tentacles emerging from a gelatinous central core, with two dead yellow eyes that somehow followed every movement without ever moving themselves. For one moment she saw it plain: a huge round lump that couldn't be called a face in spite of the lolling mouth; the segmented body, scratched and oozing from contact with the rough walls; a quartet of stubby armlike appendages, two on each side. Those ended in snapping pincers. Of course King was also influenced by Lovecraft, but I would also like to re-read a similar example in the Lovecraft books actually(I know there are many, I'm just looking for a very good one like the before seems to me). Zarkan Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Well, yesterday I opened the second of the bionicle kits my mom purchased for me on my request. Working outside really did pay off - even if it did make my arm feel horrible today. :-P As I expected, Antroz is the best of the winter Makuta. Not as much because he's really special, but more because the rest just aren't that great. Vamprah looks incomplete with his stubby legs and slapped on wings, Chirox just looks silly with his ridiculously long monkey arms that make the Inika's seem mild in comparison - and Icarax, well, he's just a mess. :-X Okay, so that's all my opinion, but it seems that Antroz and Mutran are the only Winter Makuta I like, and Mutran is the only other one I'll probably ever get. Oh well, at least the Winter Toa are all good. :-/ :-P Quote
Shakar Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Do you even have Icarax? I know what I'm going to say seems rather corny, but Icarax is one of those sets you need to see in person to judge properly. I had my doubts about the set, but when I finished building him I was very satisified with the model. None of the pictures you've seen, box images, comics or in hand pics, make him justice. Oh well, at least the Winter Toa are all good. :-/ :-P I liked Antroz as well, though I think his lower torso could have benefited greatly from an armor addition like Vamprah and Chirox have. I am actually a huge fan of Mutran, but I also have to agree with Shakar. I didn't think that much of Icarax, but I fell to temptation and bought him off Shop at Home since it saved me 5 bucks. He is actually a great set once you get him. The gear arm is not a hindrance and there are numerous poses in which it looks great, and he is much bulkier than the other Makuta due to his lower torso armor and use of piston-style functions to keep his hips sturdy. I think like most sets (such as Krekka) he looked better in person and pictures don't do him justice. Unfortunately, though, in-person doesn't sell sets, it is what the pics show that does. And Pencoin is right, I don't get this idea that Chirox has unusually long arms. The arms on my Chirox are normal-sized when you follow the instructions for the set. In fact, there are really some of the neatest arms I've seen, they're made by folding up a double-socket and a Piraka arm. His arms are actually more humanoid in length than those of Antroz or the Nuva Phantoka. Are you judging the arm length by the secondary pics on Lego Shop? Because I have seen in the CGIs and in some pics that they unfold Chirox's arms, but when you build him with the instructions you are told to fold up the arms to create the shoulders and wings. It is a cool idea, I think. Plus, I figured since they were bat-like and not human-like they didn't have to follow humanoid arm standards. I have stretched out CHirox's arms sometimes in a flight pose and it looks menacing. VK Quote
