i'm going to quote *yoda* (or paraphrase for those who are really anal)

this is lego. and in lego world, they will come up with their own names for this race(s). no need to bring in elder scrolls, LOTR, D&D, etc. :-P i guess we will know in due time what they are called.

Norro, may I ask why you think Lego seems to be copying Megablocks?

Well this looks like a line that was initiated shortly after MB's dragon/ship line started taking over toy store shelves and selling well. It is 'legofied' but definitely not a lego theme/original idea...

There is a lot of logic to what you say norro, my TRU is full of megablok dragon related sets, however they sure don't sem to sell that well. The boxes are always the same old damaged ones so im not sure they sell that well.

I'm here, my Dark Master. *vader*

Ok, I'll turn this emoticon into well written thoughts

I'm a bit depressed... thanks for the pic all the same ;-) I don't like fantasy so maybe I'm being a little harsh, but my first impression is 'I can't believe it took Lego 5 years to copy MegaBlocks.' It just shows who the dominant retail brand really is... certainly in the states where mass market retail space is so important.
you know, when i look at a MB set, i always think, "how is that a building toy, there is such little to actually build." and when i look at this set, i get the same feeling, when i compare it to 1990's sets of similar price and size. so in this regard i definitely get a MB feel. and at taking a second look at this image, im really not impressed with it.

i think i was looking at the individual elements at first, really trying to take in all the new stuff... but i was missing the bigger picture, the building set. and as a building toy this is pretty weak. however, we did come from KK2, so keeping that in mind, this is still a set in the right direction.

i bought all of the smaller sets for castle 2007, mearly as a parts-pack. and i see the same thing happening here, and i definitely feel it with the hidiously built dwaves mining set coming out next month (???). it seems to me, LEGO has some great new elements, but as a building toy, the sets are really lacking. its like they are paying their new element designers well, but the set designers are minimum-wage :-D

I notice the same. But I remember reading when the MB dragons first came out that they were big sellers state side. (Of course that was at the depth of Lego's economic slump). Judging by Lego's extremely slow turnaround time, I would guess this line was first pitched around then, even if the final set designs were helped along by ambassadors within the last few years... pure speculation- gotta love it! X-D

Oh and BM, I couldn't agree more!

I guess then it could be a case of megabloks and TRU turning out far to many, i hate going into toy shops and seeing good lego space taken up by megabloks :'-( .

That Goblin sword looks awesome. It all looks awesome!! :'-)

I doubt I'll buy this set.

But I do like some of the new parts. Thanks for the picture.

WOW! Great find Ikki, thanks for sharing! I didn't expect to see pics of the 2008 sets so early on, since we haven't even seen a more decent pic of Dwarfs Mining yet.

When I look at the picture, there are three things that immediately catch the eye: the dragon, the ship and the new Troll faction. Lets start with my impression of the dragon. Although I'm still somewhat ambiguous about which kind of dragon I like best (Viking or Castle style), it is nice to see a dragon on the good side. I like the green colorscheme, it emphasizes the good nature of the dragon. I also really like the mean looking head armour, but in comparison the printed body armour is a little disappointing, I would have liked the body armour to be a seperate piece similar to the headgear.

It is good to see the Crown Knights return, but I do wish they had chosen a different minifig instead of the general. It seems to me that riding a huge dragon is highly uncomfortable, even aside from all sorts of hefty maneuvers, the back and shoulders of a dragon will move up and down quite a bit just by flapping its wings in normal flight. In short, dragons do not make for a very good fighting platform. The general as seen in this picture has two major disadvantages: his armour is way too heavy and bulky for aerial combat and will hinder both himself and the dragon, and his lance won't do him much good either. I'd love to see a specialized dragonrider here with light armour (perhaps an archers torso?) and javelins or a longbow for weapons.

Lets have a look at the new Troll faction. First of all, I really like the overall look. The earthy (dirty) colorscheme and crude unsophisticated appearance really sets it apart from the nice and shiny Knights and the dark and sinister Skeletons, yet at the same time it also emphasizes the beastly nature of this fantasy race. In that respect, I'm not sure if the straight-edged look of the octagonal shields is appropriate here. The heraldry is kinda nice, simple and straight forward, but a bit cartoonish. However, I do wonder why they have chosen to do a skull design again, even if it is a troll skull.

The minifigs themselves are very nice. I like the skin color, faces and torsos, although it's likely that the borrowed Viking torsos will have been replaced in the final product. Same goes for the ugly wig like prototype helmets, of which the final design will probably look a lot more similar to the headgear of the big troll. The big troll itself also looks very nice, I especially like the armour and spikes.

I also like the big guy's club, but I would've liked it even better if it were brown, as wood seems to be the most logical choice of material to make clubs with. However, I'm not sure what to think of the new swords. They're large, irregular and pointy, and very unlike any of the previous sword types produced by LEGO. Though the crude appearance suits the Trolls, it might be just a little too much.

My impression of the ship. As some members already stated, it is remarkably similar to the Viking longboat in overall design. However, I do think it is different enough to be a great ship in its own right. The colorscheme and crude design is very recognisable as being of Troll origin and fits the theme nicely. Although the picture is incomplete, I'm guessing there is some kind of spiky thing on the bow to ram other ships with, which is again very troll-like. I also like the turnable masts and the unusual shape of the sails. The large skull printing on the sails is a bit much in my opinion, but I'm positive it'll do well with kids. And I just love details like the big drum!

I do however question the necessity of the two small rowboats, in my opinion they take up more space and cost more money then they are worth. I'd rather have more minifigs! Another thing that bothers me just a little, is that the bottom of the ship ends rather abruptly at the rear section, just like the Skeleton ship. This looks kinda odd to me, since ships of that era were usually of a more rounded design.

Overall, I would say: a great new faction, a nice dragon and a decent ship. Well anyway, these are my thoughts and considerations when looking at this picture. I hope you found them worth reading.

- How did the troll get on the ship? :-P

Erm... if I had to guess, I would probably say on foot, since trolls don't fly very wel... X-D

So, is that a new cage door piece? I haven't seen it before...

i was gone 2 days and i fell out of my seat!

dwarf in cage, dragon, looks like zombie oars man, and a knight whos driving without riens or a seatbelt! :-D

perfect!

Seems like I haven't been paying enough attention to this particular subforum lately.. :-$

Anyway, I like the ship, reminds me a lot of the ships in Warcraft II, which is a good thing. Though, many things about this Castle theme reminds me of Warcraft ;-) Good to see a ship with a proper length, the skellie ship is way too short.

As for the new cage door I just wonder if it will also be used for the new police station, since I guess they will need some cells too..

And something I haven't seen anyone else commenting, isn't that slope on the top of the bow a new piece? 1x4 18degree-slope? Guess that could be useful for something..

I'm pretty sure the reason to use a skull design is to emphasize that the Lucy&George faction (thanks Asuka ;-)) is allied to the Skellies.

I think your right about warcraft, the new sets remind me more of that game than LOTR. The Troll looks alot like the troll that was pictured on the last version of the game, not to mention the orc's and dwarfs too.

Using the cell door in any new police set just seems like a no-brainer to me, as lego tends to reuse a lot of there pieces over and over again i'm pretty sure we will be seeing lots of it.

That's what I've been saying as well. I just recently started playing Warcraft III and I see many similarities with the factions of the present Castle line, which I think is kinda cool!

I thought as much. Still seems somewhat illogical to me though. I mean, the Troll civilization most likely predates the necromancers rise to power and would have had a heraldry more symbolic for their own race, would they really have changed that just because they formed an alliance with the necromancer?

Tying into a game like warcraft is a stroke of genius on legos part as i've said before, this way they dont have to pay extra for the license also.

So as i don't play warcraft anyone care to tell me what other factions are in the game that lego could use?

Well, we're still missing Elves. Would like them with a green and brown colorscheme and living in trees. And the Undead faction has some room for expansion as well. More demons and zombies, war machines, etc.

Like most i think an elves line would be great, there would be a great range of elve related sets that lego could give us.

I would also like to see a main leader of the undead faction other than the sorcerer, don't get me wrong i like him but it would be nice to have another villan.

__________

You got the Skeleton Captain though, wasn't he good enough for you? X-D

The skeleton faction does have a lot of room for expansion, it needs a few more leaders and special figs.

I think that everyone here would love to have elves! :'-) Just imagine it, a forest tower suspended between two trees, housing elves weilding a new long bow design. At the bottom of the set the skellies with their new leader hold torches to set fire to the elves home. Or something, you get the picture! :-$

TTFN! >:-)

On the skellies leader, the balck knight from the Joust set is considered by the Lego site the army general.

Speaking of Skellies, what happened to the Necromancer? So far we haven't seen him on the 2008 sets pics.

Still, remember this?

In 2008 we have two Impulse items, six new retail products including account exclusives and a very special item coming at the end of the year too (wait and see!). That
