This is a rather simple mod to The Big Bang Theory set, which I just got around to building. I really didn't like all the studs on the original design, especially for something that seems more suited for display than play. Also, the telescope can now sit flush to the floor.

I couldn't think of a solution for a smoothed corner for the elevated floor, so I just left it out.

The "magic". A mistake in the photo below is that the studs for the table next to the sofa should be lower by one stud. As may notice, I wanted the tiles line up in rows to give the illusion that the floor is made of planks of wood. I ran out of 1x1 dark tan tiles so I cheated with the tiles under the sofa.

After the honeymoon period is over, I'm going to try to cram this into the Corner Cafe, including the smooth floors.

I like it, now I am just looking at my set and trying to decide if its worth making the same MOD, I'm tempted, but I don't have that many pieces to spare... hmmm, bet it makes dusting easier though!

Nice! I'm really surprised how much better I like the set with that change. It's honestly gone from "like the show well enough, but not interested in the set" to "hey, that's a good looking set of bricks and a nice tribute!" Might actually pick it up now... along with some extra tiles.

Yes, dust is always a concern, which is why I don't put anything up on display unless it's behind glass/acrylic. I've run out of display space and so this mod is now hidden inside a non-display cabinet. :cry_sad:

The great thing with LEGO sets is that there is usually something that can be improved upon.

Back to the Future Delorean: fixed hood.

Ghostbuster ecto1: plan to mod to fit all four busters.

Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine: plan to mod to fit all five of the gang.

Even before I was able to ordered the Big Bang Theory set, I saw early reviews, immediately took a dislike to the floors and started planning with LDD/Bricklink on how to fix it.

This is really how the set should have came out. The nontiled floor just looks bad and cheap. And this set is neither of those. Good job on fixing it. When I get to building mine I'm going to just do this AS I'm building it.

This why people should only support a project where they like the design and not just the idea (coughbacktothefuturecough). At least, supporters should have left suggestions for the creator on how to improve it. I wonder if smooth floors were ever brought up or if this is one of those projects where the creator puts up the design but then ignores it afterwards.

I'm pretty sure many people already do just that, actually. Note also that they obviously vote on the project design long before anyone ever sees the final set.

Furthermore, sets are always going to be redesigned according to various internal design parameters that TLG can't share anyway. If they were going to approve only projects that were already designed exactly the way TLG would release them, it would just mean that no Ideas projects would ever get approved - well, maybe one every fifty years or something like that, but essentially none.

At least, supporters should have left suggestions for the creator on how to improve it. I wonder if smooth floors were ever brought up or if this is one of those projects where the creator puts up the design but then ignores it afterwards.

Supporters leave suggestions all the time, but not everyone sees the need for all floors to be tiled; studs are simply part of the inherent look of LEGO. Looking over the comments for the original project, I see lots of people had suggestions about the minifigures - what legs to use, what hair elements, what torso decorations, etc., as well as entire other characters to have, and various aspects of the apartment that should be included, what other sets should be done to go with it, and so on. Unless I've overlooked something, though, not one person suggested tiling the floors. It apparently just wasn't a priority for the overwhelming majority of people.

Note also that adding a layer of tiles over nearly the entire footprint of the set would have raised the production cost, and possibly the selling price with it, of a set that was already the most expensive Ideas set yet released.
