Opproperaar Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 (edited) Doesn't 'Savoir' mean 'to know' :-/ ? Well yes, but my teachers always said that savoir can also be used to say 'can or be able to' though there's a difference between the two. Either one was to say I can't cause I had an accident for example while the other one was simply I can't cause I suck at it, However I do not remember which was which! :-/ One to express a disability of which you yourself is the cause while the other one is to be used when there's an external cause. :-D Hmm.... While trying to explain this I think my teachers have been playing tricks on me, this sounds so stupid when you come to think of it, but then again I was never too good at French so it might just be me screwing up X-D Edited October 1, 2007 by Hairy Ruben Quote
yellost Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 well, you can use "savoir" to say "I can" when you're capable of doing something because you know how to do it. and "pouvoir" is more often used when you have a permission (being from a rule, law or a metaphysical one) to do what you're about to do. hope that helps... But then again, since french is my mother language, I have a terrible knowledge of its grammatical rules, so I might be completely off track... But it feels right to me :-P Quote
