Best current set to start out on bricklinkink the ISD 10300 ?

Hi there!

I was just wondering... the "small" ISD 75055 is at EUR 89,99 acceptably cheap at Toy'r'us right now... does anyone know if it has enough useful parts to start bricklinking an 10300? (in LBG of course)

Maybe there are other sets, that are more useful for this task?

Or is it even cheaper to get a used original oder already bricklinked set at all?

If you want a 100% accurate set, id look for a complete one, overall 10030 isnt to exciting in terms of parts, but there are some rare ones, 2x30342 and 3x2573 are €250 on bricklink, the 14x30159 will be another €150 at least, even if you can get the other 3000 parts at €0.10 a part, that will put you above €700 for it all, and stuff like the 28 magnets, while not extremely expensive, will be hard to find in big batches (only 50 shops worldwide carry 28 magnets, only 10 shops have the required 14 black holders)

If you are open to modding/substituting parts to drive down the cost, BLing will be a good bit cheaper then a full set, and worth the effort imho

I cant offer any real advice on scavenging other sets though, but 90 euros for 75055 seems like a good deal, if you are up to selling stuff on BL yourself, you can reclaim another €25+ on the minifigs

Hi mate,

I recently read a MOC of similar size to the 10030 (sorry, I don't remember the thread or forum, google might be your friend) and he said that he was using 6 of the 75055 - plus additional pieces. I'm also lusting after a 10030 and although I could scrape together the $2000 that it fetches these days, I won't.

I can't help but think that we'll get a re-release sometime soon, here's my rationale behind it:

In 2013 we got a new UCS X-wing (10240), the original (7191) was released in 2000, which makes them 13 years apart. The UCS Star Destroyer was released in 2002, which in 2015, also makes it 13 years since it's release. The original set has a few problems with it, fragility being number 1 and a re-release would definitely benefit from new parts and building techniques.

There is a new star destroyer in Episode VII called the "First Order Star Destroyer," however I feel it wouldn't be wise for Lego to release a UCS version of that ship (at this moment in time anyway) as Episode VII won't have the nostalgic value for AFOL's, who are ultimately the target market for UCS models.

So I'm crossing my fingers and toes and holding out for a new version - I also recently bought a 75055 to tide me over until that day :)

When I bricklinked my ISD I mainly used parts of all of my sets. The sets that are most of help are the ones with much dark and light grey panels, and other small parts. The first lego star destroyer 6211 helped a lot but I don't exactly know which set helped best. You might want to look on rebrickable, it says which sets contain a lot of the parts, but I only saw other UCS sets like the second death star or the falcon.

Overall its a great set and I love of it looks but you need to get creative sometimes to make it affordable. I spray-painted the engine parts to make them cheaper and I used different magnet holders. They don't need to be the same because you can't see them. The black lever parts with grey base are also good looking and are much cheaper than the grey levers with grey base. Otherwise its a really good looking set and its worth bricklinking but it might cost you.

I looked into bricklinking a 10030 pretty extensively but ultimately found that it is much cheaper to just buy a complete one. For the price that Lego originally charged, you get a ridiculous amount of LARGE expensive pieces. You'll easily spend $1600+ trying to bricklink it. I bought a complete used one from bricklink about a month ago for $800.

As Jhaelgo stated, it probably makes more economic sense to buy a nice used one than bricklink an original. If, however, you're willing to do modifications and stray from the original, bricklink might be a good option.

I would suggest taking a look at the work Reflexes did, which I find most impressive. http://www.eurobrick...es#entry2218261

I'm actually planning on incorporating his engine design as I like it more than the original.

Edit: nvm, it looks like you're aware of his work.

Thank you for all the feedback!

As I'm a massive fan of greebling and modding bricklinked models I'd rather find solutions or workarounds for the most expensive parts... but I think some of the large plates are extremely expensive.

Just watch ebay daily... Before I finally got one at a good price I saw partial sets come up from time to time. If you have a lot of patience you can find them for a reasonable price.

Watch Ebay closely!

I picked one up for about $300, maybe a little more, it was about a year ago. It was missing about 300 pieces, but, I traded messages with the seller and requested additional pics. All rare pieces were there, wheels, magnets, holders, instructions, sticker. Most of the missing pieces were small, cheap pieces. I think I picked up all the missing pieces for less than $100, with shipping.

I had to do a lot of computer work when I got it. Inventory with Bricklink and making a making a file for missing pieces in Brickstore, but, it was worth it.

Good luck, Jamie

I just looked up the auction I won on paypal. It is not on Ebay anymore. I paid $366 for the ISD. I had other Bricklink orders then, I don't know what I paid for the missing pieces. So, I would guess about $500 total.

Good luck, Jamie

Hey, that's me. Still workin' on it, here's a progress picture from a few weeks ago: http://imgur.com/gallery/nSSaKHP

There are sections of it removed in this picture, and it's upside down. I ended up going quite a bit larger than the 10030, though, and I'm sure I've spent way more on parts than just the 75055s that I've scrapped, at this point. The project keeps growing in size or detail.

On topic, though, I'd say that the 75055 is a great value and has a lot of useful parts for MOCs. I don't know exactly how useful it'd be for the 10030, since the internal structure of mine is very different. Designing a new Star Destroyer has been extremely difficult and I've had quite a time of it. There's a problem that crops up every step of the way, it seems. I will eventually complete it, and I think the major issues have been worked out, but I would say that it's an enormous time investment.

I don't know for sure, but I think it'd be doable to build something based on the UCS Star Destroyer's directions and mod sections with expensive parts, as other posters have suggested. Also, the UCS Star Destroyer was limited by the wedge plates that were available at that time, and some simple mods could probably improve it quite a bit. I think there are a few threads with modded versions of the bridge, etc., which I think looks particularly out of date on the original model. I think that such a project would be a lot more rewarding than spending $2000 on a 10030, or whatever it costs now.
