Great idea for the contest. One thing looks a little off to me compared to the image of the yellow crane you posted: the width between the 2 legs (to be clear: between the wheel pillars). This space looks bigger on the yellow crane or compared to your build the upper structure that moves the container is more to the left. This looks off balance to me compared to what the real life crane would carry in weight from the container. Feels like the lego model would tumble if it tried the same weight to scale as the real life model (or need alot of counter weight).

Hope this makes sense, having a hard time explaining this XD

And as functionality is what Technic is all about, I just simply don't understand the reasoning behind this crane.

That is a quite limited view of Technic that thankfully not everyone shares.

I love this crane, size is a challenge by itself.

I definitely agree with this :) All those different views is why we have such a variety of models. It's good to have variety. This inspires people. It's good to have people take different approaches when they build MOCs.

It's just that this particular model doesn't resonate with what I personally like most about LEGO Technic. That's all :)

Also, size is rarely a challenge by itself. Most often, size is a challenge combined with something else (be it functionality, rigidity, strength, low weight, strange shape). One of the main reasons I don't like this crane is that I have this feeling that it's possible to build the same crane in the same scale with way fewer parts without sacrificing strength (by relying more on the rigidity of the studded bricks/plates). There seems to be a lot of redundancy. It just doesn't really seem carefully thought-out yet. I would have found it way more interesting if it looked a bit more optimized, or used an intricate truss design. But I understand time is short, so this will probably not happen within the deadline :)

I have the same thing with real-life mechanisms for example, like buildings or bridges. I'm not impressed by a strong support beam. I'm impressed by a thin but strong support beam. See what I mean? I'm impressed by things that look like the result of a difficult design process (no matter the design criteria). That's why I'm not impressed by size alone. I'm impressed when size is achieved despite some other difficulty.

Looks impressive Doc, well done!!!!!

As we have learnt with our recent bridge building sessions, building on this scale presents many challenges due to size and weight.

What can seem fairly straightforward or "easy" on a small scale changes dramatically as sizes increase. Even the faithful "rigid" technic bricks have a lot of flex in them which we both learnt first hand LOL.

Again, well done. Good to see the bulk parts put to good use!!!

Correction - won't open on my iPad mini but works ok on main Mac computer.

Nice video.

lol that's a huge crane jeeeeez :D

i don't know what people have to complain about... it's like people would complain about sheepo's cars because they're too big XD

i agree with the idea that it's not necessary making big stuff, but why not?

i never build big, but i give a lot of credit to who ever does it because it takes quite a while to make it sturdy... you know, lego parts bend a lot

and lego has no limits by the way

Doc_Brown - how can I get in touch with you? You dock crane is amazing and I NEED a construction plan... Please, does anybody know how to contact Doc_Brown?? Thank you so much.

Hi, @lucano and welcome to EB.

Please read the site guidelines and try not to revive so old topics, unless there is something important to add. Asking for instructions is not that. Doc Brown hasn't been active for 3 years, you can see that by hovering over his profile name.
You can wait until you have enough posts to send him a PM, or, just by looking at his posts, you can see he has his Flickr gallery linked. You can send him a PM that way, too.
