I voted Wild West for the following reasons:

- Wild West was a short-lived theme with a small collection of sets (making them more unique).

- I liked a number of new and existing pieces used in the Wild West theme including but not limited to the tan baseplates (printed and standard), the large amount of barrels, the green door and window in Gold City Junction, the printed Keep Out sign and WW stickers, the black fence pieces + many others.

- The theme introduced the first Gold Mine (among my favorite of the collection).

- Outstanding figs (although not enough and too many cloned throughout the theme (my biggest complaint)).

- Wagon wheels (although mostly black)

- The return of the Cowboy Hat, but none in black.

- The large number of "boobie-traps" used in the theme.

- And most importantly, if the WW theme had not been built, Grave Stone would still be just an idea. ;-)

Definately WW all the way!

I voted for pirate, having owned both pirate and WW sets. I personally think that whilst the WW buildings a perhaps more "useful" in the sense one could almost create a normal functioning town, the Pirate sets and ships just edge WW on the action side, I.E watchout towers and ships. (In my opinion anyway.) Also, on the subject of ships, I really like the lego Ships, something WW never had (Or at least to my knowledge) that was a substantial size.

hmmm... it's interesting that you compared individual elements between the two themes, B. this is one thing i hadn't weighed in my initial comparison.

for me, in looking at the individual elements, i think it's a wash... the pirate theme explored those great imperial buildings. im especially fond of the white castle walls with red brick pattern. coupled with the yellow corner stones, its a marriage made in heaven *wub*

though, as you pointed out the western theme introduced some great new molds... including the snake and all the indian pieces.

I keep visiting this thread, but I still haven't voted! I know whichever one I vote for, I'll regret not voting for the other! X-D

I think there is potential to see a new pirate line in the near future (a couple of years or so). I don't think there will be a new wild-west line. So just given that, I'd say go with western.

Good choice archenemy! *y* nothin beats those outlaws!

In unrelated news, recent pirate attacks have cost the life of a man not unlike Batbrick. We'll keep you posted.

I have to admit that I'm a little surprised to find this poll somewhat balanced. I was expecting many more Pirate fans on EB to vote for Pirates. Perhaps the indoctrination to Phes's Stockade is starting to wear off (no offence Phes, you're the Pirate ruler around these parts).

Good poll. *y*

I think that Pirates and Western are very similar with the way their third party (Islanders or Indians) were way too downplayed, and did not reach full potential (and so detracted from the theme in total). I voted for Western, because I think it has more depth, but overall I think that Islanders is the best strain of any in either theme.

of the sub-themes, islanders definitely beats the indians, and that is a huge advantage that the pirates theme has over WW. though i find myself liking bandits far better than the actual pirates (i know there were only three bandits, but those three figs were so well developed). the imperials and calvary are about even...

in comparing sub-themes we've got:

1) pirates vs. bandits

2) imperials vs. calvary

3) islanders vs. indians

so who are the cowboy equivalents in the pirate theme ??? it seems WW has the advantage of having more sub-themes.

C'mon... who can take the cowboys and indians seriously? P, leeeaaase!

It's shocking this poll is as close as it is, perhaps I need to get more Pirate enthusiasts to invade this forum and show the westerners who's boss! :-D

I belive that Western is a bit better for a few Reasons

- To have a real good Pirate battle you have to have at least say 2 people playing (Which is hard if you have a older brother who doesnt really use lego, like mine...)

- Western is more Inventive since on the WWW movie its in the age of invention!

- You can have shoot-outs by yourself!

- Once you build a magnificent ship and you want to play with it what are you gonna do? You dont wanna blow it up and also moc ships are usually built with many gun decks, how you gonna open every hacth and get every cannon pointing out without breaking bits and pieces?

- Western is more accessible with push and pull mining and open back houses which is much more playful in my view.

I do like pirates but overall western is cheaper, easier to moc and mocs to be proud of!

Pirate mocs are great but It takes months to make ships then after a while you wanna make a new one right?

Your gonna have to break it up arent you if you need say 1 piece. Also pirate ships need lots of crew, lots of cannons, lots of sails, lots of bricks, just... lots of money and time!

WHAT??? Western rocks and the pirates megablock. :-P

I find the Western theme to be more versatile. You've got several fractions that are well covered (setwise). Not like the pirate which has some pirates, some soldiers, crappy natives and a useless amount of imperial armada sets.

Which is better?

*knight* Castle X-D .

In all seriousness, I would start by looking at price. Typically Pirates are in greater demand and shorter supply than the Western figs. This makes building Pirate stuff exceedingly expensive. Western also has the added benefit of not requiring as many specialized parts (boat hulls, masts, sails, canons, rigging etc.) meaning that it is easier to MOC at a reasonable price. If you don't already have a good foundation of Pirates minifigs, you would probably want to go Western as building up a strong Pirate collection may cost you a small fortune.

Both themes are good, but the Western line is probably cheaper.
