Obviously this wasn't done on purpose but it is funny how close they were released to each other though. Of course now you’ve said that the VW bus appeals a bit more. But it’ll need an overhaul to have look like the later model above, but if that removes the dreadful roof line it currently has then even better. Only just found out about the Delorean, straight on my wants list! Is going to be comparable in size to the 911? Quote

ModeRed Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 All these reviews just whetting the appetite more. I did wonder if there are people looking at this set with a view to creating a standard Delorean from it… Quote

MaximillianRebo Posted March 23, 2022 Posted March 23, 2022 Reading through the description and specs on Lego's website and I realised the word 'DeLorean' is never used. While the vehicle is obviously a DeLorean (how could it be anything but?) and the front grill features the DMC logo, the model is called the BTTF Time Machine and the plaque also just says 'Time Machine' manufactured by Doc Brown. They even use the quote "Are you telling me you built a time machine?" without the payoff "out of a DeLorean?" Probably all tied up in whatever rights agreement was made between TLG, the film's IP holder and the car company. Quote

Yeah I thought that at first as well, but then I found this a page. https://www.lego.com/en-us/lego-delorean-is-back Quote

1980-Something-Space-Guy Posted March 30, 2022 Author Posted March 30, 2022 (edited) Here is an interview with the set designers: https://jaysbrickblog.com/news/lego-back-to-the-future-delorean-designer-interview-sven-franic/ Interesting tidbits: They purposefully gave us the BTTF Part II figures to give us new minifigs. They don't have the technology do to every piece in drum-lacquered silver. They used a robot to test the wheel mechanism a bunch of times. They avoided the question regarding why the word "DeLorean" does not feature prominently on the set. They tried to have the doors stay open, but they couldn't without sacrificing stability. I assume this is just a licensing thing. Even though DeLorean...kind of(?) isn't a car brand anymore (I think they tried to make cars again a few years ago, no idea what happened with that), I know the brand itself still exists and they sell other stuff. I would assume that Universal owns the trademark for the time machine, though I'm not exactly sure how that works since it's clearly based on a real vehicle. It's a little odd, but I would guess it just boils down to complex licensing issues. Did the Ecto-1 specifically say Cadillac? I don't think that the Ideas version did, but I can't remember for sure. LB2341 Posted March 31, 2022 Posted March 31, 2022 (edited) Yes, the Ecto-1 did have the Cadillac branding on the engine in the Creator Expert set. Edited March 31, 2022 by LB2341 Quote

Says it's already sold out on Lego.com It was released on April 1st, but don't worry! It says "temporarily sold out", which is completely normal for a new, popular release. That means they'll make more and in due time, anyone interested in one will be able to buy one. If anything, the fact that it sold so well hopefully shows to Lego that this franchise has potential! BrickMonkeyMOCs Posted April 7, 2022 Posted April 7, 2022 The issue with the self-closing doors can be fixed by swapping the pair of #2780 friction pins in the hinges for the older (1980s-vintage) #4459 friction pins. Quote

This is great to hear. Do friction pins lose their friction noticeably over time? And would you happen to have a picture of how the car looks with the doors held open? It must look really cool! Quote
NathanR Posted April 7, 2022 Posted April 7, 2022 50 minutes ago, BrickHat said: Do friction pins lose their friction noticeably over time? Not unless the pin is subjected to excessive wear and tear, e.g. you use it as a pivot that is constantly moving. The black technic pins with friction from the 1980s were notorious for their excessive clutch power - once inserted into a technic pin hole, it was almost impossible to remove them, you had to use pliers! The redesigned version that appeared from ~1990 to the present day were made to be much easier to work with, but this meant they had lower friction as standard. Quote

I remember those quite vividly with the first Technic set I had, 8054 in 1989. I also remember the various techniques employed to get those pins out, and can happily concur that they were brutal. 1980-Something-Space-Guy Posted April 14, 2022 Author Posted April 14, 2022 For anybody looking to buy the set, it might be worth keeping an eye on your local stores. I've read on Reddit that somebody's store gets new stock on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I just went to my local store today to buy something else and was very excited when I saw the built model. Surprisingly, I then found three DeLoreans on the store shelves, and I took one of them home! I was not expecting to buy it on this trip, and I was hoping to buy it at a later time. However, given that I have waited years for this set and that I had just seen it built, I couldn't resist! Quote

We might just have to wait for a while. I saw that. It was really very well done. In terms of additional sets, is there anything at all they could do that would be more popular and generate more revenue than the current time machine? I'd love some minifigure scale sets, but at least one would have to include the time machine, which might dent sales of the big one (could just add to it though). And then you've got the play scale market of kids and some adults, which isn't as big of an overlap with BTTF as the 18+ model. If they do it, it would probably be sensible for them to wait a couple of years. Hope I'm wrong though. Quote

I really think they could do some great sales with either a minifig scale time train or train DeLorean + locomotive. The train scene is so memorable and exciting that I think it would be great for a playset. Quote
Brickdad Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 Not been on here for a long time! Son fell out of love with Lego and I couldn't afford to buy any of the ones I was interested so moved on (making music has consumed my free time!). However, after a trip to the shops I spotted this in the window and knew I HAD to have it. However, none in store and none online (apart from the usual eBay sellers). Do any of you knowledgeable eurobrickers know the likelihood of this being made again? I have activated the email reminder from Lego store and noted that it stated 'temporarily' out of stock but I want this sooooooo bad! Quote
