brunojj1 Posted January 10, 2016 Author Posted January 10, 2016 Hello Friends After a little playing around with the DTM building instructions, a other BMW has arisen. The BMW M4 DTM - Shell #18 I hope you like it I like it very much! Ok, we can go on with the project and make also completely white and black versions at least virtually. I´ll try to gain a stock of the required panels this year and build all of them in real when the time will allow it. Some decent stickers would be nice to add too if Jaap or whosoever is willing to invest some more effort for them. Thanks brunojj1, this is a fantastic creation, I have almost completed building this and I must say it has been an extremely enjoyable project - it shall sit proudly beside the Ferrari Spyder of yours that I built last year. OMR Pride is something I´m trying to avoid for myself, but let´s say it gives us satisfaction for some time, even if ignorant people sometimes even don´t recognize our shelfs during the visit . I was one on the yellow guys, but I still think this is the best looking Lego car along with Hartley's Huayra I've see so far (to be honest, I wasn't a fan of your previous stacked beam body designs). Thanks, I´m not sure about your statement , but again: your new car also isn´t so bad at all (understatement). There are many things I have to learn besides the maximum usage of Technic panels - e.g. about gearboxes and reducing part counts of course. And I´m always trying to think about the playability as major factor, not to overload my mind on the outer look (which is primarily set by the blueprints). This car doesn´t have too many alternating curves in the bodywork, it was much easier to make than the LaFerrari. I also didn´t ever try to make my entirely self designed supercar which would be a challenge too. @brunojj: should be not to hard to build this marvel with just 2 XL, 2 IR receivers (instead of 3) and 1 accu (for all motors and lights) for the prize of some slower speed - right? what do you think? or should i spend an extra accu for the servo plus the light? Don´t spend too much money, be creative ! The actual PF setup as given in the building instructions simply is what I had available at the time (I have only 2 rechargeable batteries and they are at least 2 years old). IMO the minimum requirement would be 2 XL motors, 1 IR receiver and 1 rechargeable battery accompanied with a 3:1 gearing. The speed difference is not that much. I have the strong suspission that new batteries will make some difference too. Quote
Kumbbl Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 (edited) thank you for your fast reply... i will try this setup: 2x XL 1x Servo 1x IR receiver V2 for the 2 XLs 1x IR receiver V1 for the servo 1x PF switch for the lights 1x Accu battery pack (quite new) for all stuff and forgot in my previous posting: Thank you very much for sharing this outstanding model and also this very professional BI for free! Edited January 10, 2016 by Kumbbl Quote
filuS Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 My setup will be: 2x XL motor 1x servo 2x IR receiver (most likely both V1) - one of motors, one for servo+lights 2x battery box (1 for motors, 1 for lights/servo) I will not be changing anything in gears and see how it goes. Considering I am build this mostly to sit on a shelf, I am not really hung on "max speed", as long as it moves I am fine :D Seeing different color combination for this model, I realized another thing I like about this build - full yellow body work, which gets a point for diversity. White/black/red supercars are pretty common, for obvious reasons - they look great and all, but after 10th red model, it gets a bit "boring". I would also like to have full blue supercar, but there are a lot of extremely rare blue parts (especially soft axles and some pin/axle connectors) and some commonly used panels do not exist in plain blue. That's why I think this yellow BMW and Hartleys blue Pagani Huayra are two of the best display models to build. And luckily, everyone has a chance to build one of them. So - we have Audi RS5 DTM (2014), BMW M4 DTM (2015), maybe year 2016 could the year of Mercedes AMG DTM? :) Quote
brunojj1 Posted January 11, 2016 Author Posted January 11, 2016 (edited) Thorsten even didn´t mention that he made complete building instructions for his favourite version of the DTM M4 ! They are online and can be downloaded for free: http://rebrickable.com/mocs/Thorsten50/bmw-m4-dtm-shell-rc All parts are available in the shown colours. He also prepared a unique sticker assembly which will be customized soon by Jaap Technic and be offered on his website. This car has been driven by Augusto Farfus. He finished 12th in last season. brunojj1 Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) Thanks Thorsten! Maybe this black Lego version is the most "boring" one because it mostly consists of black parts. But on the other hand - it is easier to build concerning the availability of parts. I´m waiting for some black pneumatik hoses to arrive and then build it with the minimum PF requirements to see if it still works well. A side note concerning the DTM driver Bruno Spengler: he changed his team during the 2015 season (MTEK) and then got number 7. He finished 5th - that was the best BMW ranking .... Now only the white M4 DTM version is to follow (Martin Tomczyk) ... And I won´t build the AMG Mercedes, maybe somebody else is willing to. Edited January 13, 2016 by brunojj1 Quote
brunojj1 Posted January 18, 2016 Author Posted January 18, 2016 (edited) Back in black. Everybody knows how rare the black 19L soft axles have been ever since. I´d come up with 16L at the fenders edges which look not bad too. All in all I like the black version, not too boring compared to the coloured. Jaap is really busy and a bit behind with the stickers. Doesn´t bother me, I made my own composition. Technically I tried the minimum PF version using only 2 XL motors, 1 servo, 1 receiver / 1 sender and 1 battery. The drivetrain is geared up by a 36/12 – 12/20 gear reduction. Of course the car is slower this way, but it works fine. Instructions are being updated and will be replaced in the next few days. Several pins were missing and some minor improvements had to be done. 3 different options for the PF equipment will be shown. The files will be substituted under the same links – just download them again. If anybody has difficulties with anything, don´t hesitate to tell it. Maybe we have a chance to win the race for the Top MOC competition on rebrickable! Honestly, I don´t expect everybody to say "Oh thank you for the instructions!", but it would be a little but nice compensation for the efforts. Edited January 19, 2016 by brunojj1 Quote

See what i have written At Jan 10th: "...and forgot in my previous posting: Thank you very much for sharing this outstanding model and also this very professional BI for free! And thumbs up for Thorsten, this crazy genious! 1 receiver can provide enough energy. Of course the batteries won´t last long. V2 is better than V1, but really not much. brunojj1 Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 ? It was a bit of German sarkasm, please don´t take it too serious and forgive me! My next car will probably be a blue Japanese . Quote
Lipko Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Aoh. I thought you were complaining about popularity, and that is my privilege Quote
Kumbbl Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 ? I suppose brunojj wanted to express that currently germans are not generally popular and liked all over Europe cause of current political circumstances... And i'm sure he meant it with irony and maybe a little bit of sarcasm ;-) I would say: no worries, lego joins us all together... :-) Quote
Duky Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Thanks for your great model and the instructions. I think i will try the middle option of the PF. What's the setup for that? I will gather parts slowly ;) Quote
filuS Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 (edited) Once I build it I will leave a "thank you" note on rebrickable, don't worry ;) As for the black 19L soft axles - let's hope they will become more available once people start building new 42052 - not only it contains one regular 19L black soft axle, it even has one as extra! And for all intents and purposes - we can easily replace them with pneumatic hoses. To Duky: I think middle option would be something like this, or at least I will be doing it in following way: - 2x XL motors + 1x IR Receiver v2 + 1x battery box - 1x servo + 3x lights + 1x battery box - 2x ir remote Edited January 19, 2016 by filuS Quote

Gear reduction 3:1 - 1:1 (I don´t count the differential every time). Can´t wait for the 42052 - will be a great part supplier, especially all these panels! Edited January 19, 2016 by brunojj1 Quote
flyboy01 Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 going to build this as soon as I get 2 more functioning XL motors. Does anyone have problems with a red version, reverse engineered? (I don't buy stuff online other than TLG). Quote
filuS Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Today I finished building this beauty with 2 XL motors, servo motor, 3x lights, 2 battery boxes and 2 IR receivers (v1 for servo+lights, v2 for both XL motors). It looks gorgeous in person, especially with the stickers from Jaap. Sometimes I ended up scratching my head in few steps in instructions but at the end I got it done even with few modifications to steps here and there. However, the car itself does not drive extremely well, it's very easy to trigger some sort of protection on batteries and it stops the car and I need to wait few seconds before car starts moving again. Maybe I should have chosen different gear ratio (I used version A from instructions), but since I am not going to be playing with it very often I don't really mind few hiccups during the ride. And I also did not realize how hard (well, I still can't get it done) it is to calibrate steering with servo motor. So, in the end my car is unable to go straight :D Big thanks to BrunoJJ for this outstanding model, Throsten for instructions and Jaap for the stickers! And together with Lipkos Audi RS5 DTM (in black) Quote
Vectormatic Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 (edited) So Guys, Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much it would cost to bricklink all the parts for this model, either with the PF parts, or with a Fake V8 and basic gearbox? The new porsche announcement got me thinking, im not a big porsche fan, but a similar scope car would be right up my alley, and im a big fan of touring cars (if someone does a 2011 4 door C AMG, id have a little crisis) Edited January 27, 2016 by vectormatic Quote

The adjustment of the servo must be done right at the step when the steering is being installed at step #50 on page 80. Have to appologize for Thorsten here because the instructions updates are still in progress, together with another unique blue/whith version of the BMW. He doesn´t talk too much (at least to me ), he just prefers to shut up and work. As soon as they will be uploaded, this information will be posted here. It depends a bit on the country you´re living. If you opt for a manual version to design by yourself, you would save some money for PF of course. Then good luck with it and please post it here too! Mercedes AMG (2 doors only) - that´s exactly what I´m dreaming of already as C - Model alternative for the new Porsche ! Do we really get seperate instructions for other PF setups??? or examples? I asked Thorsten to integrate somehow the 3 different PF / gearing options accordingly, we will see how far he could addapt them into the BI. Anyway I guess it´s not too difficult to figure out for yourself the best solution you can match with the equipment you have available. If I got you playing a little bit - it´s a nice success for me as well . Edited January 27, 2016 by brunojj1 Quote

Didnt think of that (havent really used rebrickable yet), i ended up finding ~1600 out of ~2000 parts for roughly €200, using the PF parts list (although that €200 doesnt include any PF), so im guessing a purely mechanical version would be doable for ~€250, unless i missed some very rare parts in this quick search. This isnt something i would be diving into soon, but i was quite curious how expensive MOCs like this are, now that im comfortable with bricklink, this stuff is more interesting then the regular TLG sets. filuS Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 I don't think that even without PF you could build this model for under €400 total. While you can get 80-90% of all needed parts from one store, the rest can be very hard to collect. For MOCs of this scale I usually end up buying from 5-6 stores as a result of few days on the bricklink finding all the hard-to-get pieces and combining different stores to satisfy all store terms. For example - if there is a part in a color that is available only in 5 stores on the entire bricklink, and there is only one store in EU which has €60 min buy, there is not much to do than either get in it another color elsewhere or simply buy there for €60. Then I end up moving pieces around the stores until I find the solution where I get all the pieces for the cheapest. And now imagine you have 15 parts like this. Postage/handling/paypal fees can add significant sum here as well. As I was building two models at once I can't say for sure how much this one alone costed me, but my estimation is around €600-650 with middle PF setup. Btw - I always buy my bricks new if available and not overly expensive, you could save up if you are fine with using used bricks. I think the cheapest big scale supercar MOCs would be either Kuipers Predator or original red Audi RS5 DTM by Lipko - they don't use that many rare parts and use very common colors. I have both of them, each of them built for around €400-450. Quote
mandylion7 Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 WOW, I'm usually not into BMW and occasionally I dig a certain technic model but this is out of this world!!! This is wow! Everything is done perfectly and I've never seen a BMW done in technics that was so perfectly precise. Especially the front! Quote

My experience with building such large MOCs is that you should try to start with a set for most of the parts. Rebrickable can help you find a set that covers most of the parts. Prices of loose parts on BL are on average double the price of parts in sets. When I have most of the parts collected using sets I look for the cheapest combination for the rest on BL using Brickficiency: http://www.buildingoutloud.com/brickficiency.php Saves you a lot of time and comes up with the best possibilities given you constraints (# of shops, location, condition (new/used).
