Heroica RPG - Quest #143: Making Amends

"When they killed the lord of all the demons, his entire horde completed evaporated, so its doubtful.

"Well, that's good."

Calamity, Jinnipher, you ready to head out?"

"That reminds me..."

The black knight reached into his Bag of Holding, and removed his Ruby. He tossed it to Calamity.

"Karie's a smart cookie. I trust her. And by extension, if she doesn't trust you - well, neither do I. But either way, that gem of yours is only good if you aren't fighting dark-aligned creatures - and if we're going up into the mountains...well, we have no idea what we're going to be facing. So, stick that into your Bag of Holding for the moment."

[Scubacarrot]

"I'm ready. I was just admiring the menu. Can't afford anything."

The black knight reached into his Bag of Holding, and removed his Ruby. He tossed it to Calamity.

"Karie's a smart cookie. I trust her. And by extension, if she doesn't trust you - well, neither do I. But either way, that gem of yours is only good if you aren't fighting dark-aligned creatures - and if we're going up into the mountains...well, we have no idea what we're going to be facing. So, stick that into your Bag of Holding for the moment."

Calamity smirks. "Karie is a bigotted airhead that fell into a powder box and thinks she can continue acting a hero with a baby on her breast. But... Thanks. I'll be sure not to set you on fire."

[Palathadric]

I monitor the exchange, not sure if I'm willing to share my possessions with the unusual girl.

OOC: I forgot to mention that I'll be away for the weekend. I'll be back to full participation sunday evening.

Calamity smirks. "Karie is a bigotted airhead that fell into a powder box and thinks she can continue acting a hero with a baby on her breast. But... Thanks. I'll be sure not to set you on fire."

"I'd appreciate it if you left that conflict at the hall."

"Well, that's about as good as it usually gets. It reminds me of this time when we had to destroy this machine that was spawning demons that were taking over this gnome community. We had to kill the inventor too...because he stupidly refused to let us kill the chief demon."

"Some are beyond reason."

Jinnipher nodded. "Let's go."

OOC: I forgot to mention that I'll be away for the weekend. I'll be back to full participation sunday evening.

Gabriel nods, and heads to his room. He comes back, dressed in armor and tactical equipment from head to toe, helmet in one hand, and a large handcannon in the other.

"Let's. We have one day until Masson's birthday. Not much time to spare."

With that, the party shows themselves out of the Albatross, and beings their trek through the Eubric Mountains. The air is crisp and the soil rocky, steadily making their way up a slight incline. Lush trees and fallen boulders dot the landscape as the party continue on their trail. Eventually, they encounter someone who resembled a man...

His head was nothing but a brightly burning flame. He was holding a piece of parchment. He hears the sounds of footsteps behind him, and turns around, revealing how featureless he truly was.

"Morning, travelers. The name's Garson."

"Morning, travelers. The name's Garson."

"...Morning." Lind decided to try and handle this in a casual manner.

"Beautiful day for a walk, or a bit of reading, isn't it?" Lind nodded towards the piece of paper the strange individual was carrying.

[Endgame]

"You could say that. This isn't reading material, though."

Garson raises the paper over his shoulder, not even breaking his stride. The parchment showed a picture of a similar flame-humanoid, but the depicted person had a pinkish-range flame instead of blue. Apparently the being's natural glare interfered with the AIUPPUP's contrast, as the photo had a bad glare and faded colors.

[Lind Whisperer]

"You could say that. This isn't reading material, though."

Garson raises the paper over his shoulder, not even breaking his stride. The parchment showed a picture of a similar flame-humanoid, but the depicted person had a pinkish-range flame instead of blue. Apparently the being's natural glare interfered with the AIUPPUP's contrast, as the photo had a bad glare and faded colors.

"Friend, foe, or bounty?"

"Sister."

"Sister."

"Ah. Long-lost, or recent? What happened?"

[Palathadric]

I look on quizzically as Lind speaks to the strange being, keeping up my gait.

[Endgame]

"Ah. Long-lost, or recent? What happened?"

"Oh, no, I've been stuck with her for life, heh. I'm just out an errand, and I figured I'd bring the picture along... Gotta keep family close, right?"

"Most people know their siblings. I'm an outlier."

"Ah, you're missing someone, Mr....?"

"...Gabriel. And no, not anymore."

"Ah. That's nice."

I look on quizzically as Lind speaks to the strange being, keeping up my gait.

"You never seen a Kelvos before, sir? Hah. Can't really blame you. We're not the most common humanoids out there."

Calamity holds her hands near the being's head, trying to find out how hot he burns.

[Palathadric]

I look on, at first assuming Gabriel knew the being, but then realizing he did not.

Strange that he divulges personal information so freely, I muse.

"You never seen a Kelvos before, sir? Hah. Can't really blame you. We're not the most common humanoids out there."

"Well, don't let us disturb you. Gabriel is in some hurry here, apparently. Have a remarkable day."

[Endgame]

Calamity holds her hands near the being's head, trying to find out how hot he burns.

Before her hand even reaches the outermost layer of the flame, Calamity is forced to pull her hand back, burnt quite well. The man was even hotter than he looked - surprising, considering he was apparently a living fireball.

"Oh! Sorry, miss, I was busy speaking, and... Well, that felt just a bit tingly for me, but probably wasn't too good for you. Here."

Garson reaches into his cloak. Calamity notices that he's holding onto many chemicals, vials, and creams - moreso than most of the heroes here. Garson grabs Calamity by the wrist and begins treating the burnHe takes out a vial of shimmering water and pours it on the wound, before beginning to apply some sort of gel.

"You know how the center of a candle's flame burns blue, because its the hottest? That's my entire head. Best be careful."

"Well, don't let us disturb you. Gabriel is in some hurry here, apparently. Have a remarkable day."

"Yes. We are. But we might as well let this guy treat the burn for a couple of minutes before we proceed. We have twenty four hours, at least.. In the meantime... Garson, got a light?" Gabriel removes a packet of cigars from his pockets.

"What do you think? Just don't make the same mistake your friend did, please and thank you."

Gabriel lights his cigar by brushing it against the corona of Garson's head, and goes to lean on a nearby tree. He takes drags of it, puffing out smoke, staring at the scene with a stony look in his eyes.

Lind shook his head at the strangely acting sniper, and stretched.

"So...Garson. What brings you out here?"

[Palathadric]

"You know how the center of a candle's flame burns blue, because its the hottest? That's my entire head. Best be careful."

"So, is the rest of your body normal and only your head fiery, then?" I say, my interest piqued.

"Yes. We are. But we might as well let this guy treat the burn for a couple of minutes before we proceed. We have twenty four hours, at least.. In the meantime... Garson, got a light?" Gabriel removes a packet of cigars from his pockets.

"One thing I learned from my days of heroing is that time is a funny thing. I think it's best not to assume everything will be alright, but to accomplish the work first. Nevertheless, you are the boss here, so I will rely on your judgment.

"Smoking is not good for the health, though. You're apt to die young making that a habit."

"What happens when you touch water?" Calamity asks happily, content to let her burn be treated.

"So...Garson. What brings you out here?"

"I suppose. My limbs are still a little bit fiery..."

Garson removes one of his gloves as he treats Calamity, showing a mostly normal hand - except that it was engulfed in the blue flicker of a flame. Toasty.

"But everything else is just about normal."

Gabriel simply shrugs, and takes another drag of the cigar.

"My nightly routine, up until a few months ago, was drinking enough to get three men drunk, having sex with a prostitute or two, and then snorting Pixie Dust. I consider this an improvement."

"What happens when you touch water?" Calamity asks happily, content to let her burn be treated.

"If it rains, or just like, a cup of water? Steam. If I was to stay in the ocean, well... After a while, it would start to hurt. That's a bit difficult to evaporate."

The black knight was a bit unsure as to why Gabriel was pausing on what was apparently a very important mission.

Gabriel simply shrugs, and takes another drag of the cigar.

"My nightly routine, up until a few months ago, was drinking enough to get three men drunk, having sex with a prostitute or two, and then snorting Pixie Dust. I consider this an improvement."

What charming behavior.

Gabriel, meanwhile, seems to be cracking a smile.

"What? Have you known me to be anything but professional, Lind? We've been walking for about two hours now, and we have been talking to this Garson guy for only a minute or two. Rest your legs. The incline is gonna get a lot worse real quick, so I don't want any of you going into it with a leg cramp.

And if its my former routine you have issue with, well... Should've said something in Cenauri."

Garson shrugs in response to that question.

The black knight shrugged back.

Gabriel, meanwhile, seems to be cracking a smile.

"Yes sir." The black knight leaned against a tree.

"It's your routine, and you're welcome to choose to make what choices you make."

Lind decided to poke about in the grass near the side of the road with his shovel.

"So, Garson - what corner of Olegia do your people originally hail from?"

Jinnipher hikes along with the group, mostly opting to stay silent among the usual chatter and casting an occasional glance at Gabriel. She was extra careful to do it only when he wasn't looking, of course.

"It sounds like you have a lot of experience with demons, Monk. Though I don't think I'll need your help with an exorcism if this one-" she jabbed her thumb towards Calamity. "Manages to summon something bigger than an imp."

Yet, if the girl had any reservations about Karie or Lind, she couldn't be all bad. Still, the Moon Elf silently reserved her judgement.

She eyed Garson for a moment, then shrugged. "A Kelvos, huh? I've seen stranger things. It's a wonder how anything you touch doesn't just ignite. Talk about an incendiary personality."

Gabriel simply shrugs, and takes another drag of the cigar.

Jinnipher stood next to the Sandman in the shade and crossed her arms. "Don't you still drink enough to keep you slaving away at that piano? Really Gabriel, fighting bad guys suits you better."

"Well, I suppose if you want to die young, that's your business." I say, shrugging.

"What? Have you known me to be anything but professional, Lind?

"I wonder if the prostitutes told you that..."

"It sounds like you have a lot of experience with demons, Monk. Though I don't think I'll need your help with an exorcism if this one-" she jabbed her thumb towards Calamity. "Manages to summon something bigger than an imp."

"I suppose I do. It's part of my life, really. I haven't seen the girl summon anything thus far. I think if she the power to summon a demon that could threaten our party, she would have attempted to do so before now, and would have probably tried to take over the world already. That's how those demon summoners usually work."

I chuckle.

[Endgame]

Gabriel is about to respond when Lind takes out his shovel, and digs finding five gold buried in the dirt.

"Funny that your gloves don't burn. They don't happen to give resistance to burning, do they?"

"I wonder if the prostitutes told you that..."

"In fact, they do."

"No, they did not tell me that."

Jinnipher stood next to the Sandman in the shade and crossed her arms. "Don't you still drink enough to keep you slaving away at that piano? Really Gabriel, fighting bad guys suits you better."

"No, not nearly as much. Albatross is just pricy as hell. That, and I don't really mind playing the piano. Always kind of liked music.

Besides, I have to do something between getting contracts and paying you home visits, don't I?"

Gabriel chuckles, and begins to walk forward slowly.

"Good bye, Garson. Heroes, you ready to go?"
