Posted December 3, 20159 yr Hi everyone, I have been working on a TC9 entry for almost a week. At first I was going to make a garbage truck (I thought it would be cute since I entered the mini competition with a garbage truck ).I had a wireframe model that was good, but as I progressed I noticed that my ambitions for the project started to outgrow the size limit, so I scrapped the idea for a future project. Yesterday I decided on building a telehandler. I have been wanting to build one for a while, and it seems TC9 is the kickstart I needed for that. I haven't chosen a specific model since i don't think I have the talent to recreate it faithfully at this scale, but I plan on using their color scheme (Fully red with black&white cabin), partly because I think it looks good on telehandlers&lego, and partly because I had seen a manitou telehandler at a local fair and fell in love with it as a kid. I did some prototyping yesterday, and I quite like the proportions of it. I'm using 42009 wheels and I'll implement functions using pneumatics mainly. I haven't built any mocs with pneumatics, so it will be a challenge for me. The current functions that I envision are pneumatic boom lifting, pneumatic boom extension, possibly pneumatic front outriggers, hog steering. I am pretty satisfied with the boom design, it looks the right size at this scale and is quite robust. I plan on using the new 1x11 pneumatic cylinder from arocs and hide it inside the boom neatly. The current provisional size is 36*16*16 = 9216 cubic studs. For the B-model, I currently have some ideas but haven't decided on anything yet. A possible candidate is a dragster with these 4 wheels on the rear & Technic Pulley Wheels on the front.
December 3, 20159 yr A possible candidate is a dragster with these 4 wheels on the rear & Technic Pulley Wheels on the front. Where You will put those wheels un A model?Nice start, especially boom.
December 3, 20159 yr Where You will put those wheels un A model?Nice start, especially boom. They can be mounted inside those big wheels, even on the outside as a part of the rim.
December 3, 20159 yr Author Nice start, especially boom. Thank you, that's the part I worked on, the rest is just mostly placeholder. They can be mounted inside those big wheels, even on the outside as a part of the rim. Exactly my thoughts. I can't think of anywhere else that they won't look out of place. And I'd hate to try to hide them in a meaningless place for the sake of b-model. Great start. Do the forks fold up? Thank you. Currently, no. In the final model, they may be manually foldable, but I don't see any other option. I think running pneumatic tubes beside the boom will cause a lot of clutter. They may even stay unfoldable at all.
December 3, 20159 yr At this scale manual folding is fine, it would help to free up volume if you need it later in the build.
December 4, 20159 yr Author Update time. Yesterday I did the following things: - Reworked front axle: It was 2studs wider than it should be, fixed that, and greatly improved turning radius - Rebuilt boom: The inner boom is now brick-built. I tried the long pneumatic but the extension amount was just not cutting it. I changed it with a gear rack + worm gear combo, now it has excellent reach without loss of robustness, and much mor uniform color. Forks are still placeholders. - Did the front part of the cabin: It looks Ok for now, but I may change it later. I feel it looks bigger/taller than it should be. - Did some tryouts for the rims with the pulley wheels in mind: I feel the second one looks much better, and may prove to be awesome with custom stickers.
December 4, 20159 yr Yup, a custom sticker which looks like a bunch of bolt heads would look good. I hope you plan on swapping the 1x11 pneumatic for the 2x11 one to increase power and control. Also, it shouldn't be too difficult to add pneumatics to the forks, just have the hoses running on the outside like the arocs.

The pneumatic is there for testing the movement range, I'll probably use two in the final model since the real ones seem to be using two, but I haven't decided on 1x11 or 2x11 cylinders. I'm afraid 2x ones will look large in this scale. For the fork, the arocs system is an option I considered and I will definitely toy with the idea, but as I said I may drop it in favor of a cleaner look. With the current extension range, There will be a lot of extra hose running about when the boom is retracted.
December 17, 20159 yr Author Hey everyone. I couldn't spend a lot of time last week, but I got back on this again recently, so it's time for an update. Here's the list of improvements: 1- Completed cabin. I may tinker with it for a bit, but it's finished more or less. Also added mudguards and they improve the looks greatly. You can also see the pneumatic pump on the right side of the top image. I tried a rotational pump, but it proved to be too shaky. This one is much more stable because it is very close to the wheel. The bottom black gear on the right is steering and the top one is boom extension. 2) Worked through multiple iterations of outriggers. At first I tried something with manual linkage, then one with LA's, and finally decided on pneumatics. This final version both looks good and functions well, in a compact space. Also it doesn't touch the wheels or the boom. The rubber pieces at the end really provide grip. I'll replace all the connectors on the outrigger feet with rubber ones in the final version. 3) Again, multiple iterations of the fork. This version functions good enough, and is stable. The only downside is that the forks do not fold up. I may modify it if I can think of a good solution to folding, but I won't use pneumatics on the fork because of stability issues under load. Here's what I'm planning to do next: - Do the bodywork. This is the biggest thing missing. - Clear silicon hoses are placeholders, I ordered some official lego hoses and will replace them. (It's almost impossible to find third party ones with colors close to Lego here in Turkey. I ordered some blue ones but thier material was polyethylene and they were very hard) - I'm also waiting for a 1x11 Cylinder. Final version will use 2 for lifting.
December 18, 20159 yr Very nice, lots of cool details!i like the clear silicon hoses. Do you have to use LEGO hoses for the contest? I think the clear adds interest. Merry Christmas, Andy D
December 22, 20159 yr Author Thank you for your thoughts, feels good to know that heavy cannons like you guys approve this model . The A-model is finished now. I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out overall. Unfortunately it was late last night so I couldn't take pictures. I'll take some and post it tonight. Meanwhile, I can't decide on which type of fork suits it better: I think the axle looks better and more in-scale, especially when folded, just a bit wobbly. The beam is sturdier, but looks a bit large for my taste. Any opinions?
December 22, 20159 yr Yeah, good question...! What you describe on both option are exactly the same thought I have... What you basically are looking for is a more flat part, more in scale as you wrote!
December 22, 20159 yr I think there was some kind of pieces that look like a ski it shoud fit well Great job anyway! Waiting for the B model EDIT: i found it on bricklink http://alpha.bricklink.com/pages/clone/catalogitem.page?P=2823#T=C Edited December 22, 20159 yr by PKW
December 22, 20159 yr Yeah, that fork part would be great. Otherwise, I would go with the beam rather than the axle.
December 22, 20159 yr Author I think there was some kind of pieces that look like a ski it shoud fit well Yeah, that fork part would be great. Otherwise, I would go with the beam rather than the axle. Yeah, I'm definitely gonna try that piece, it looks just the right scale & form. I just have a slight problem, I'll have to order it from bricklink. There's only two viable bricklink stores here in Turkey, and both of them are unavailable right now. One of them is on vacation, and the other one still hasn't sent my previous order for 2 weeks (1x11 pneu cylinder) because he is moving. And if I order from other stores, I may need to wait 2-4 weeks for international shipping to arrive. I guess I'll have to save the final photoshoot to the last week of the competition, and shoot both models at once.
