could it be 8288?...the most overpriced set ever perhaps?....i dont really get this set, it only has 800 parts and none of the parts are particularry rare?

maybe 8275?.....personally i think those Lego Racers sets are the most rare/valuable.

Before 42009, MISB 8421 could sell for £600 but not anymore. MISB 41999 and MISB 8043 are both about £300.

8480 and 8880 seem to be climbing in value.

Also side note I wonder what sets have depreciated the most

Good question but I think it needs some clarification. You speak of at least two definitions of value in your post. You begin with using the word 'valuable' which seems to connote overall money...how much is it worth type of thing. But then you speak of valuable parts....kinda like what is the most bang-for-your buck sort of thing. IMO...two separate questions.

As for the latter question, as a owner of both 8288 and 42042 i actually like 8288 more. I know that many will think this is heresy but here is my rationale: 8288 is a smaller scale of a larger, more intricate machine whereas 42042 is a larger scale of a smaller, less-intricate crane (IMO). And I think that is why people pay so much for it. The relative size of the boom, jib, etc make it look like a much larger real life crane, like a liebherr 1600 or something. As for parts, 41 and 31 l string are not cheap, and it has tons of 15 L liftarms for only an 800 piece set

The 8285 Tow Truck is a pretty valuable set..

Also not sure if this fits becasue of the Racers name, but the dealer edition BMW Williams F1 is VERY expensive..

I know someone who paid well over $1,000 USD for the rare set(One on the bottom)

you have always to take into account where you live! In Germany e.g. neither 8285 nor 8880 are really valuable - both you can get quite cheap in used but very good condition with BI and box... 8288 is indeed quite seldom but if ypu are patient you can get it also quite cheap...

another question is if you are asking for MISB (unopened box) or used sets....

So here in germany the excavator 8043 is IMO the most valuable set... unopened new normaly not below 300 (unless you are very very very lucky) and mostly substantly more expensive (about 400€) and used not below 130 (unless you are very lucky) and mostly about 150 - 180€

As an ROI if you bought 8288 new and sold it in the last 2 years it climbed up 10x in value. There is no other Technic set anywhere near that return. Yes there are more expensive (8275 is routinely 700 USD new) but it also started much higher and thus the ROI isn't quite as good. 8043 has been a shocking accession of value considering how it has very few rare parts (the panels are all that I can think of) and how new it is.

Yes I understand some of the early expert builder series MISB go for more than 10x but considering how old they are very few of us here bought them new and still have them.

Surely the value of any set comes down to what someone's willing to pay.

The above is a case in point.

Around a year ago I paid £158 for a BNISB 8461 Dealer Edition which to many I know is very cheap but I wouldn't have paid more than that for it.

As many of you know I recently sold a load of sets to buy my LEGO room and the 8461 Dealer Edition was one of those, the buyer paid £385 for it which I was more than happy with but as I said I wouldn't pay that much.

The buyer had his idea of the sets value, I have mine.

Well, if you are lucky and find a good deal all sets are affordable so it depends. I got my 8461 for about 100 euro and my 8285 for 110 euro. I was lucky because I love this sets.

I think the Racer series is valuable and ofc all of the epic flagships like 8043, 8258, 8275 and so on.

If you are of those types of people who keep their eyes always standby, then i assure you you will get a very unexpected cheap price. But you need to search a lot and keeps your eyes open. :')
