...But seriously, triple digits?! ..... Are you guys ever going to use all those?! default_oh.gifpirate_laugh_new.gif

The freebuild I'm working on will include triple digits of... something! Not soldiers though. If I wanted I could put a powdered wig on every single one of them!

Just a note to everyone, the due date for January freebuilds, MRCA forms, licenses, etc... is January 31st anywhere in the world. Just to ease some of you panicking to get stuff done by midnight GMT...

Posted

If it's 1 Feb here, but 31 Jan there, can we roll it out as a Feb fb? Or wait for after the Jan scoresheet?

It will count as January's FB. Better wait if you want it to be your February's first FB

Hi everyone... I have been reading this thread for a month now and finally got some time to actually join. I would like to be a full participant, but not sue if I'll have the time. This whole thing really got me back into Lego in general after many years away. I created a character and even a moc with a back story, but am currently figuring out Flickr and the way to post. I have always enjoyed Legos but never really moced before, so hopefully this will be a great learning opportunity...

Sparhawk - we'd love to have you onboard! :classic: It doesn't matter if you can't be a full participant - just do what you can. That's my personal approach.

Regarding MOCs, I think there's always something to learn, so you'll fit right in.

Then you are in for a very exciting experience. I slowly awoke from my dark age about a year and a half ago, and Lego have helped me relax and get in touch with my creative side again (especially helpful since I'm in a creative business). The learning curve never stops. My best advice: Be careful and consider what you need when using bricklink... Edited by Sir Stig

Welcome aboard, Sparhawk - I am sure we are all looking forward to following your story, whatever you level of participation will be.

To introduce yourself, simply present yourself (and your sig fig) in the faction thread of your faction of choice. pirate_blush.gif

Bricklink is a dangerous drug! pirate_wink.gif

I was looking for an official intro section, but could not find one... If there is one, I can "officially" introduce myself there too

This depends on what faction you want to join. They are all pinned in the BoBs main forum. You can read more them there and choose between; Eslandola (merchant empire), Corrington (science empire), Oleon (religious empire) and Sea Rats (Pirates, independent). Brief description. Edited by Sir Stig

Thanks for the info guys, but I was talking about a "main intro" for the whole site, like some forums have... I will def post my intro in one of the factions soon. As far as bricklink... And general Lego purchases, I really like the Pirates theme, it's too bad that everything is discontinued, but I will build up my stash :)

Just remember, this project is a little bit stricter than GOH, you will have to stick with your faction for a while, so make sure you are certain you want to join Corrington, or whoever you join, before committing.

I am pretty dead-set on Corrington especially because they like Science and I think there is a lot of building opportunities with them, especially if the technology in the realm can achieve the Science-Fiction vibe. Also, the use of red is a nice touch.

We really aren't going to be going super tech here, just so you know, science in the time period was more developmental and exploratory, rather than super science. What I mean by that is improving existing methods of doing things such as finding the latitude and longitude of a ship with instrumentation, or an explorer trying to find treasures. The are no lasers here, not saying you can't tech it up a bit but inventors of the period were usually ignored unless their ideas had practical applications (ie redevelopment of a printing press).

Welcome to Eurobricks! There are a lot of helpful links in my signature, including ones on how to best use flick! But the page you are specifically referring to can be found here. It's right off of the main forums page which is also a useful page to browse if you are new here. And you should totally check out the Sea Rats page! We are small in number right now, but every doubloon we earn we earn for ourselves and not some stuck-up king or queen!

I do not mean that lasers weapons would be created but more specifically elements inspired from the Steampunk genre. I think that would create a nice balance between the realm of BoBS and industrialization.

I believe we are in the Age of Sail, which according to most of what I have read seems to be about the 1570s to about the 1860s...since we are just starting out, we are probably in the 1570's time period...ish? Give or take 20 years or so.

We might be 200-300 years too early for industrialisation :p

What specific contraptions did you have in mind though?

...That's kinda what I was saying this isn't really steampunk, It's really not high fantasy at all, trust me we shot down Steampunk early in development on the leadership board, I'd pull the post but it's literally buried in there. If you want to get a good idea of what to expect from BoBS and you absolutely need a video or genre representation, I will point you towards the Starz series Black Sails (It's amazing and I suggest it to everyone as long as you are 18+) or Pirates of the Carribean 4. I'm not saying go find the Holy grail, I'm saying pirates and the authorities are going to clash.

We really want to push the Pirate element here, And focus on sea commerce and story telling related to adventures set around deceit, scheming, gold and glory. This is as Stash2Sixx said set in an alternate worlds Age of Sail, and I thank him for pointing this out. We when through months of ideas and writing up rules to try to make this game fun and accessible to all levels and respect the board we're on, The Pirates Board, it would be a disservice to the regulars on this board to make the game anything but Pirate Worthy, as we have kindly been invited to develop this here.

Well, usually in books the Age of Sail ended the moment the Monitor engaged the Virginia, though in general lines it was a bit earlier as the Ironclads went into development.

I think personally to have a `decent` timeline, it might be better to consider it ended a bit before that, about the beginning of the 18th century, generally considered at the end of the Napoleonic war.

Within that timeframe, there is already a LARGE difference in ships and technology, like the size of ships and guns, to have a great variety to build around. Take for example a Venetian galley from the Battle of Lepanto and compare to Nelson`s HMS Victory...

I always thought we were closer to early 16th century, the age of exploration and colonisation.

Indeed we are :) but some ships will a little be more like 17th century vessels :)

Which is no problem as long as they don't start to fly (like in one of the 3 Musketeers movies)

Oh, I have just loosely thought of the whole era when building. I did not know we were following a sort of timeline. The big questions then is: how fast does time go? And how do we know that we get towards the end of the era? Does it end at some time, planned as an ongoing game, or go in cycles?

I will probably be in the wrong part of the age most of the time. Architectural eras have an approximate span, but there are builds before and later that exhibits some of the traits of the different styles. I am not schooled in architectural history either, so I may often miss on that as well. I must just excuse beforehand, and say that I will probably follow my plan of building up a colonial/early industrial settlement as an installation (Think Tropico).

I don't think we are too rigid in the storyline, really. What matters most is to stick within the age of sail (pre-steam engine, etc.), and to remember, that we are building in a newly discovered world. Therefore, it is unlikely to see very large ships, old buildings or very advanced settlements, as everything is (relatively) recently built, and every colony is still in the emerging phase. (Unless of course you build in the old world.)

As we progress, I think we should see a progression not so much in technology, but rather in sophistication of the settlements and the vessels navigating the waters.

So far, we have already seen anything from cogs to what looks mostly like napoleonic era vessels! pirate_blush.gif Personally, I really like this diversity, but of course, no one wants to see steampowered monitors and wire-guided missiles! pirate_wink.gif

There is no need for a strict timeline - unless someone wants to write a history book illustrated with Lego.

I'll be building mostly 1600s-late 1700s material. (And mostly old-world as it relates to BoBS... Yeah, I'm probably a maverick.) Loosely building within the entire era is a good way to put it.

Limit everything to a strict timeline and I'll be sailing to new horizons! :pir-laugh:
