Tezclatipoca Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 I don't think we are so strict in the main lore ! First it's possible to build from the galleys or Vikings Dakar to the napoleonic vessels. That's a great variety yet ! Secondly, it has already said that technology will help, especially in Corrington, I mean not to see steampunk ofc, but some great inventions from the Renaissance era are possible IMO (Leonardo Da Vinci ... someone ?) And finally, don't forget the possibility of mystic and kinda "magic" available in the Oleon myth. That is allowing some nice mythological ideas, in a decent way of course. So this game is bringing many opportunities yet to be explore before thinking at other things. Quote

And in my opinion, that doesn't fit here as this is the Age of Sail, not the age of steam engines or we better start building trainroads between our villages... Also, forget Leonardo da Vinci. Yes he had some ideas that were way before their time, but they were never executed. For that matter, we should also forget the fact that Pater Verbiest invented the automobile in 1670!!! edit: my hometown Pittem represented!! Edited February 1, 2016 by Maxim I Quote
SkaForHire Posted February 1, 2016 Author Posted February 1, 2016 Oh, I have just loosely thought of the whole era when building. I did not know we were following a sort of timeline. The big questions then is: how fast does time go? And how do we know that we get towards the end of the era? Does it end at some time, planned as an ongoing game, or go in cycles? I will probably be in the wrong part of the age most of the time. Architectural eras have an approximate span, but there are builds before and later that exhibits some of the traits of the different styles. I am not schooled in architectural history either, so I may often miss on that as well. I must just excuse beforehand, and say that I will probably follow my plan of building up a colonial/early industrial settlement as an installation (Think Tropico). As most have pointed out, we have a loose "historical" timeline, it just has to be Late Medieval to Age of Sail. In the game system its all about buying licenses for that reason, otherwise we would have to rate a caravel verses a 3rd rate, and clearly we know who would really come out in that situation. Build what you want as long as it fits the broad period. So far, we have already seen anything from cogs to what looks mostly like napoleonic era vessels! Personally, I really like this diversity, but of course, no one wants to see steampowered monitors and wire-guided missiles! Well, then I quit. My torpedo cruiser was about to be unveiled! Quote
Captain Dee Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Well, then I quit. My torpedo cruiser was about to be unveiled! Well, I was going to build a battery-powered mini-sub with a little mast and yardarm on the conning tower so Captain Jack Sparrow could putter around indefinitely with his feet two feet above the water... but now you jerks have gone and ruined it! dr_spock Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 When do we see the results of the MCRA? Yzalirk Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 We might be 200-300 years too early for industrialisation :p What specific contraptions did you have in mind though? The most outlandish thing I had in mind would be some sort of robot or automaton enforcer or companion for my main character with a pirate-like aesthetic. I was thinking along the lines of this but with some adjustments, so as making the left arm the same as the right and making him look less "high-tech", if that makes sense. Other than that, I was thinking about making some oil rigs and factory things. I was also thinking about using this right leg. The story behind it would be appropriate. As a character, I want to go along the lines as a big-money sort of guy, kind of like Andrew Carnegie or John D. Rockefeller. I might have been playing too much AdVenture Capitalist for this inspiration. Quote
Sir Stig Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 (edited) Question about parity and settlement sizes. Does the number reflect how many buildings of each it needs or the total levels? In the example for a large city it needs eight of each in the four categories (artisan, commerce, residence and factory). Would that mean it needs 8 different factories regardless of size, or does each size increase count against parity as well? (Small=1, medium=2, large=3, royal=4) If it needs to be separate buildings it is clearly much better to build only small properties until the city is big enough... SkaForHire Posted February 1, 2016 Author Posted February 1, 2016 You make a great point, Stig, We will have to revise that, expect it in this month's revisions that "Size does matter!" On a note to everyone, I have had a chance to start calculating totals today (don't expect it done today)... Some people did not get their free DBs for their FBs because they didn't register them, but they did buy a license! Make sure to do both so you can make more gold!@ Quote
SkaForHire Posted February 1, 2016 Author Posted February 1, 2016 The Bank of Corrington has officially extended a 10 DB line of Credit to MKJoshA, and 3DB credit to TitusV. Make sure your numbers line up next month as I am not sure if the Bank will be willing to keep funding foreigners. Quote

SkaForHire Posted February 1, 2016 Author Posted February 1, 2016 There will be a chance for adjudication through another form. This would only be for the previous month. If you don't agree with the totals after I post them in a few days, then you will be able to use that to send relevant information that will help us fix your "account" Quote

Both of these things didn't exist in the age of sail let alone before 1859, when Drake made an oil well in Titusville, Pennsylvania. And even later for offshore drilling. And robots as a presence still don't exist! No one would mind you trying to be a capitalist, though you'd get squashed due to rampant political corruption, in any of the four factions. Factories are for the most part run by manual labor and Coal. As I said before this is a pirate forum and we respect the vision of the board. Quote

Automatons were used during the 16th century and even before. The only problem would be the type of automaton. Saying that a big fellow like that, from the picture, is a "toy" would definitely not fly. On the other hand, I think as decor for the front of a ship would do just fine. That is if I can build a ship (I was looking at parts to build the hull of a ship). You got me on the oil rigs but there are other means of obtaining petroleum. Who knows, some of the doctors may use petroleum for ! With Factories, I would have to see if there were any automatons built in the 16th century or before or I my character could be less of a cheap bastard and hire some people! I have a few ideas in mind for what kind of factories could be built. Also, I still want to use that leg for aesthetics! I think me using the term "capitalist" was a bit stupid. I meant entrepreneur but the word could not come to mind at the time. I kept looking around to get a better understanding of the economy of Corrington but I could not find anything so hopefully they would be willing to accept an entrepreneur. gedren_y Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 About automatons: there were coiled spring devices in Roman times that rolled along a straight track dropping small balls as distance markers. There is also the Antikythera Mechanism. Thank you History Channel. Quote
Vedauwoo Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 (edited) Just been following the technology conversation, and found this "Timeline of Historic Inventions" on Wikipedia that might help..... That being said....lots of "modern technologies" were touched on, even in ancient times, often forgotten to the ages or misunderstood as a whimsy rather than a tool or machine. There was also the lack of organization in the refinement of materials....which, one could argue, cannot come about until the alchemists come out of the shadows and become chemists proper.... Edited February 2, 2016 by Vedauwoo Quote
dr_spock Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Were those automations and inventions like the antikythera mechanism continued to be used in the time period between Medieval and Age of Sail that BoBS is set in? Or was knowledge and skills to use them lost in the LEGO Dark Ages? Quote

Ska said he'd create a "fix-it" (no, that's not what he called it) form for everyone who failed to submit a free-build form for January, so just wait until that rolls around. But no, it is more important to submit a free-build form for your build than it is to post in the free-build topic. The latter is just for reference. Quote
Capt Wolf Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Kai NRG, thanks for clarifying. Now just awaiting the "fix-it". Thanks! Quote
kabel Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Since I've been involved in this project since the beginning, I thought it kinda unfair to register something I had been building on for months. Now, I will though! Quote
Bregir Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Since I've been involved in this project since the beginning, I thought it kinda unfair to register something I had been building on for months. Now, I will though! In the interest of building up the lore and the settlements, I do not think we should be too restrictive. As long as it is not just "recycled" builds, I think they should be allowed. And with the rules for scoring of freebuilds, and licensing fees, I do not see that anyone will get an unfair advantage.
