Phred used the designation "CNS" for "Corrington Naval Ship" for his Swift. Is that considered standard nomenclature or could I use "HMS" for a warship as well? I prefer the latter by far but I could do CNS if need be. It just sounds messy.

I guess it depends how technical you want to get! 'HMS' in the Royal Navy denotes a vessel that has been commissioned into the service of the Royal Navy. Privately owned and operated vessels historically would not have had the prefix HMS. My understanding is that the 'xNS' type prefix was used by nations that didn't have a monarchy - the vessel was still owned by the state, just not the crown.

Personally for Corrington I prefer 'HMS'

But, at the end of the day this is a game we participate in for fun, so as long the faction leadership is happy - name your ship how you like! pir_laugh2.gif

"Some traces of gold have been found on Tiberia, but not enough to be a fully functional mining economy."

Does this mean that I cannot have a mine on Tiberia?

Posted

You absolutely can, but if you want to do it through the mining license, its more like spinning the wheel to see what you get. The percentage for gold is very low on Tiberia though. Each island has its own stat percentage that changes. When we choose our next island, we will have some idea what is available on that island (which will help use choose -- and I will have to stay silent on the pick, because I know what is where)

So what do you all think about our captured ship, Pardisio? It is a Class 4A -- a pretty formidable ship. We would have to pay upkeep, but since it is only our 4th faction ship, we don't have to MOC it. The upkeep should be negligible at 15DB, but actually there may be a tweak in upkeep to 10% instead of 5% -- which would bring it in at 30DB.

A possible way to offset this is have our merchants pay a fee to use the escorts, or more preferable, foreigners wishing to use our escorts could pay a 5db fee. Or, for now, we could take it out of the coffers.

If we start taxing foreigners alone, that might cause some political issues left or right.

I would suggest, considering she is `expendable`, that for the first tow or three coming MCRA`s we use her like the three royals. Corrington at the moment has by far the largest navy and the wealth is also solely with us at the moment.

If we can take the lead further in those first months, it might enable us to `sit back and play the waiting game` while we can focus on other goals like settlements, explorations etc, while the other factions are still playing catch up, and without looking hostile. If we get convoys of only two or three trade ships, the 4A can be used for that extra layer of protection.

I would vote to add it to her Majesty's fleet. I like the idea of charging foreigners for usage of our escort vessels. Even without that, I feel the empire will make enough to cover the upkeep just by escorting us on our own merchant routes.

Thanks for the answer!

As far as the ship, by all means add it to our fleet. If needed, Coyle Shipping Company can help pay for its upkeep.

Can someone help me understand upkeep fees on ships? I didn't think there were any.

We should be OK on upkeep from the Royal coffers for now. It would be our only expense, unless we start actually paying our ministers salary this month. Both Scarst and I have forgone drawing our salary for the good of the nation for the time being. I am not sure if Captn Stabbin is planning on playing in the EGS, and we have not officially raised Captain Dee to a ministry position yet, but he will have one soon enough. He can decide if he wants his salary paid or not then. And as more of you enter into the governmental positions of Corrington, you can make those decisions yourself.

Other than those possible expenses, we are on a pretty sure footing.

Right now they are only on faction owned ships past the first three that your faction starts with.

I too suggest adding it to the fleet - I should think we could pay for the upkeep with our current economy. Otherwise, we can ask the flotilla that uses her for escort to pay for upkeep that turn.

default_innocent2.gifpirate_tong.gif Really? We're only like 124 DBs behind you (because we pay our officials), and have only one ship less than Corrington too (and that is because it sunk)... but you guys can go ahead and rest on your laurels for all we care! default_innocent.gifpirate_laugh_new.gif

...But... we'll be happy to keep up the friendly relationship even if you guys are going to be boasting every two minutes of your wonderful riches! pirate_tong.gifpir_laugh2.gif

Aww, someone stepped on Eslandola's toes? Isn't "the Money Empire" the riches faction? Poor little "rich" Eslandolans! pirate_wink.gif

I feel what this has taught us is Group bought ships are okay long term investments but not great for big payouts. It also taught us roll as a pack because the majority of Corringtons fortune except for Tomsche (Who was extremely lucky, I was there during the rolls) came from the same run. These are all early game generalizations and will change as more trade routes are established.

And then there are the other two.

The Oleans probably had wrong calendar and forgot to send their ships out, while the predators got predated...

Oh wait, that was compassion...

I`m building my city one brick at a time, to `launch` it probably near the end of the month if all goes as planned. For the rest I`m a bit on the backburner this week as the living room needs painting lol

Challenge 1 ends February 15th, so we will have at least 1 new island to settle then. Tomsche is going to found a city there I believe. This month I will continue to build in Arlinsport, Tiberia. I have two new buildings to add to Amelia Street.

I will be slow this month, not sure I will get challenge entries in (I can't win, but I can add to our score). My father-in-law had a heart attack two days ago, so life is pretty hectic, and I will be out of town for a conference the 17th-25th, all of this makes building pretty impossible.

Anyone is welcome to build in Port Raleigh, the town has a Bahamas mixed with New Orleans feel in my mind. IF we win the challenge, then we get two(!) islands. So keep working on those challenge builds if you have not.

I am sorry to hear that Ska! I hope he recovers well! My dad had one 2 years ago, so I understand what you are going through (mine recovered very well after 5 months luckily).
