Don't see it myself. I've said it before many times and I will continue to say it. The UCS MF didn't sell the first time. It was hanging around on the shelves for a long time before LEGO finally managed to shift them all. It was too expensive, at a price that now seems like a bargain. At today's LEGO prices it would be between 5-600 uk quid. Even with all the new hype, can LEGO ever have the confidence it will sell at that price sufficiently enough to justify development and production when they can infinitely churn them out at 1-200 quid all day long? What's been seen is more likely some sort of one off for a show/display or something. That I can believe...

https://www.facebook...00643799964580/

...and let's be honest, the original is an awful build. It's pretty terrible. LEGO are more likely to come up with a complete new design then rehash an old set which isn't even that good.

BUT the Ghostbusters HQ is pretty big, all be it without the additional SW price tag, so anything is possible.

If they do release a UCS size MF in the next few years, I hope it's big enough to take the crown of 'the biggest set' I've always found it a little irritating that it is the 2nd biggest.

You should avoid judging the sales of a set based on how you view them at your local stores. Just seeing a set linger around for a long time on shelves isn't an accurate way of determining sale statistics. And, like Solscud said, you have a much larger audience than 2007.

my chosen words/analogy does not change the facts I'm afraid. It was enormously discounted before it eventually sold out. Edited by N8thanAshley2

Nathan, the $500 price tag is reflective of US Lego market. Lego is always more expensive in the UK and Europe than here in the states. If they did remake the UCS MF it would sell at $500 in the U.S. Maybe $550 but that would be pushing the limits. Unless they make limited run at a higher cost but I haven't seen Lego do that.

you're suggesting the price of the MF will not have risen(inline with all other LEGO) over the last 10yrs(specifically in the US? Haha)

I understand that there are new sets coming out next year, that's what this thread is for. But please, have a little courtesy for the people who have not yet seen the new movie. I mean, if you're going to reference a set that is not currently out and it refers to EP VII, put the message inside a spoiler tag. Is it really that difficult? Give them at least a week or two. Yes, you will survive!!

And for all of you that are complaining and making reports about all of the spoilers and cluttering up this thread...stop. IT'S THE INTERNET!!!!! There are at least three of us who have been as diligent as possible with regards to watching this thread...but I actually have to work, along with all of the other Mods and Admins, so if you think it might not be best to go onto the internet the week of the new movie's release because you might read something you don't want to...STAY OFF THE INTERNET!

It's not rocket science, it's common sense. And if this makes me a "rude moderator" for telling the truth and not sugar coating it...well tough . Real world is meaner than me.

Have a great day!

You see, herein lies the problem. You say you 'and other moderators'... But who are they? Because a few pages back (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=118611&st=2900) Bob DeQuatre was warning people NOT to give out spoilers. So, the SW mod is saying not to, and you are saying it is to be expected?

Lack of communication going on there, conflicting signals to everyone...

I have been quiet about the whole spoilers thing since the film came out because people have for the most part been very courteous, just the odd few slip through.

But if you are going to start telling people off for using the report function as it is intended for when someone has done something that is against what they have been told by the sw mod you are now making the report function obsolete, as people will be scared of getting banned for using it what it is meant for, and as said, mods have lives/jobs to live also, so won't be as aware, then people start getting frustrated about spoilers etc (I'm not, i'm done with that, I'm here at risk now  ) and arguements occur.

Can you please sort out amongst you mods what is/isn't allowed?

Thanks :classic:

Having reviewed the board rules again, there's nothing in there about spoilers. If anyone sees differently, please quote this post in their reply with the passage in question from the forum rules and guidelines, which are here.

It is a courtesy to not post spoilers.

On the other hand, are we going into the new year listening to complaints about spoilers? How long is a reasonable length of time to observe?

Go see the film. There's a break coming up, no more excuses.

Firstly, please can I ask everyone to refrain from making posts such as '+1', '+100' etc as they add absolutely nothing to the thread. The EB guidelines are clear about this sort of thing and we expect a certain degree of maturity when writing, thanks :classic:

I think the key difference between 2007 and the last couple of years is the popularity of LEGO, which is supported by the huge sales (and profits) that they've enjoyed recently. This is partly due to an increase in collectors and fans (many of whom are in their 30-40s and with more disposable income than common sense, and I include myself in that category!). But, in addition, there's also the 'Brickpicker' factor with people actively buying sets for future resale.

I would expect that if TLG decided to advertise a pre-order UCS Falcon (10179 scaled) at £750 with a limited run of 20,000 worldwide they would sell out in a week without any difficulty, and I'd be in the line for one. You've also got to bear in mind that TLG don't necessarily have to make a lot of money to consider releasing a new version, as it could literally be considered as a 'flagship' model. How many potential buyers would go to a LEGO shop to look at one (and then decided to buy the system-scale version?).

What!? They are in stock now?!!!!

My wife found the Resistance and First Order Battle Packs at a Barnes and Noble store today. I can't blame a store manager for putting out LEGO stock early. Most of the stores I visited last night had LEGO shelves that were quite bare, except for a few large, unpopular sets (Kylo Ren's Shuttle, I'm looking at you).

The SSD is another example of a set that performed disappointingly for LEGO.

600 quid is $900 BTW

A very modest 0.10ppp x 5k pieces is £500 and then some...

A 5k piece MF will not be $500

Haha $500 yes, but it'll be considerably more than that now I am afraid. That's what is was sold for over 10yrs ago.

You could sell it at £1000 and it would still sell to adults that missed out, in very, very limit numbers. Numbers that unfortunately can never sensibly justify the costs of reproducing it. It will never sell in the volumes required or at the price required and unfortunately LEGO know that. No matter how strongly some of us want it to happen doesn't mean it will. :(

BTW I am not suggesting it will be £1000. Just a LOT more than $500

Completely agree... With everything Solscud said. I think you aren't looking at the bigger picture, at how much attention the previous MF regardless of if it was a failure or success.... has had, and created. It is essentially like a famous dead artist. Might not have been amazing at the time, but by dear god, it made it big when they were dead (or out of production!). Disposable incomes are higher now, so yes, while prices are going to be higher, many people will still be able to afford them. And what with all the new Episode 7 hype, Han Solo AND the MF being in this film (unlike in 2007), reigniting the drool for seeing the MF in a new setting, and not to mention the potential side film about Han Solo, that is literally the perfect storm to release such a set.

Consider this: The current MF playset is essentially a slightly updated version of the previous one. Nothing drastically better, just a few little improvements that when added up make it a fair bit better. That isn't exactly a cheap set, but they've released a new version not so long after the previous one went out of production. There clearly is a market for people who want the MF, and TLG know the interest in the MF, which enabled them to release another version barely upgraded for the same price. They'll know for sure if it's a good thing or not.

10th post down, Bobs text:

What part of "no spoilers" do you not understand??

Just because it is not clearly there in the guidelines does NOT mean the guidelines are exhaustive. The mods may edit a thread's rules (or make a clear post as has been done) for dynamics of such a time when it is required, such as new film being released about Star Wars etc.

They have the power to, as determined by the above quote above, which you also linked to, but clearly did not read properly.

Well I would agree that the Millenium Falcon has reached an all time high in popularity. I mean already several weeks/months before the Release of Episode 7, the new Millenium Falcon was #1 Bestseller on Amazon in the category of Star Wars Merchandise in general!

Collectors as well as casual consumers really seem to have a high demand for it, as it also plays a big and crucial role in the new Star Wars Movie.

I would probably buy a new UCS Falcon in an instant, even if it would cost 500 - 650 Bucks.

But even so it remains to be seen if Lego really wants to go that route. I would definitely make sense, but with Lego you never know.

I think Star Wars fandom is at such a high that right now Lego could justify a NEW $500 Falcon. It would be huge press and Lego is just the kind of company that could pull it off. I mean, we're getting a Ghostbusters HQ for a franchise that is pretty dead at the moment (upcoming movie will change that), so why not go all out in an easy money win with Star Wars?

After building all of the 2016 January releases (without Takodona and resistance troop ship, which aren't available yet), I have to admit that it is a great but small wave. We don't get any large or semi-large set like in previous years, so I hope we will see some great sets with price point 90-200 EUR in summer and September.

The battle packs (both galactic empire and E VII First Order) are the best ones imo. The weakest ones the other two battle packs, but this is only because I really really like all kind of empire/evil stuff...

Whished there were a few sets with classic stormies on their way to complete my layouts..

Greetings. Hendrik

PS: did I read anything about summer list? Go on!

Speaking hypothetically: I agree if that happened they would sell out within a week. However the majority of the sets will be bought by speculators whom would then try to flog them on ebay for double the price.

However do not forget that if that were to happen, it will very likely upset quite a lot of collectors and fans and their public image would suffer too. I dont think Lego would want to go down that route.

What would make more sense is for Lego to crunch the sales numbers for the other large SW sets such as SSD in order to try to calculate how many potential sets it may sell. Then they should double that number (considering that it is the MF we are talking about). That way they can be guaranteed that they would sell quite a lot of sets and there wont be any disappointed fans.

Speaking realistically: £750 for a Lego set? It's a huge amount of money. It's double the price of the SSD. And considering that it will probably weigh twice as much I think it would be safe to say that not many people would buy it to play with. The majority would probably but it for display purposes. In which case it would make more sense if the interior was not as detailed as usual. This would keep the number of bricks down, the weight down and the price down.

Lego should aim to release a UCS MF that costs around GB£500 which would make it more affordable and would help to sell more. People keep saying tht £500 is not realistic and achievable and they give reasons why. However it seems to me that no one is thinking about the fact that production costs have gone down compared to 8 years ago (Chinese factories, increassed capacity, better building methods, etc).

750 certainly is a huge amount, I feel that they could make one for £550. Given new techniques/parts etc, they could probably make one quite easily at the same scale with less parts but just as much exterior detail. I also feel that it would sell out within weeks. I also feel that regardless who bought them (shame on scalpers though), that as long as they got their sales, it doesn't matter who bought them.

I also then feel that I don't believe TLG would think their image would get hurt if they made a completely new one. I mean... They released a new X-Wing. I'm pretty sure they'd not even consider it as hurting those that already have a 10179 as it isn't like they'd release an exact copy. They still have their very own 10179. They would most definitely NOT release a 10179. So those 10179ers can still feel like they have something special. To complain that a 'similar version' has been released is being seriously anal, and TLG can't cater to those that are seriously anal, but to those with money. It wouldn't even dent their image.

I however, do not believe that sales of an SSD and double it etc (or whatever method that bases sales form an SSD) is any form of successful research. To me, the SSD is a door wedge. It is a big triangle of light bluish gray lego plates that to be honest, is impressive in size and capturing a 'general appearance', but not worthy of me spending £350 (to me personally.). It is also not as iconic, nowhere near infact (again, my own opinion) that to simply estimate the success chance based from another model, just isn't a viable option. However, I do believe they already know full well how viable it is/is not, and are acting upon that outcome.

I think there are so many mods that have improved the original 10179 that there's plenty of scope for updating that set and keeping those ultra rare pieces to the original model.

The rear engines section and the dish could easily be updated especially if they make it a TFA based MF. Hellicarrier is £269 so even doubling that cost would bring it in under the £550 mark. I think if there's one licensed set that they could put out that would sell enough at that price point it's the MF.

I agree with Fup in feeling that the £350 for the SSD wasn't worth it especially due to the odd scaling and the overall aesthetic whereas a minifig scale Falcon at £500 would be a no brainer.

There is a LOT of hope in here, and very little sense... It has to be £600+ in today's money, or the set will simply be a lot smaller and not UCS. You only have to look at the current price per piece (consider the price per piece of existing MF sets and the thought of one for £500/$500 is hysterical) to work that out, and I'm in danger of repeating myself here but we in this room represent a HUGE proportion of the tiny amount of potential customers prepared to lay down such a colossal amount of money for a childrens plastic toy. It won't sell at that price in the numbers required to justify stocking it. Try and keep some perspective and seperate blind hope from logic.

Perhaps £750 is towards the top-end of the possible price point, but bearing in mind that the cost of 10179 was set in 2007 there's 'standard' inflation, plus the additional 'premium' that most new sets seem to include, to factor into it. I would be delighted if a replacement was at a £550 price-point, but personally I think it could be north of that. The cost of anything is subjective; all I can say is if you found a MISB 10179 on Ebay from a legitimate seller for the same amount, wouldn't you jump at it? I certainly would! Whilst it's understandably a lot of money to some, you've just got to look around the internet for the 'die-hard' fans who spend tens of thousands on their hobbies, just look at what some of the original MISB Kenner action figures sell for.....

The UCS X-Wing could be a good comparison; TLG updated it just enough to make it sufficiently different, but it still retains the 'essence' of the original set. A similar approach to a new UCS Falcon would be a smart move :classic:

And also try and keep separate complete and utter guessing/opinion from fact.

Can you tell me what research you carried out to determine that we in this room represent a HUGE proportion of the tiny amount of potential customers?

Absolutely NO one can say that it isn't possible for TLG to do, except TLG, as only they have the ability to carry out/determine whether it would be a success. And in all honesty, the way they are going, whatever they decide to do, I can pretty much guarantee it will be the right decision.

And who said it has to be exactly the same size as before? It *could* be slightly smaller. Just because the last one was MF scale doesnt mean the next potential one they did would HAVE to be. Maybe more would buy it if it was slightly smaller and kept within a semi reasonable price?

Not to mention, you CAN NOT use price per piece based on system scale sets and UCS sets as a comparison.

Todays MF: 1329 pieces, RRP: £130 = essentially 10p per piece.

UCS Sandcrawler: 3296 pieces RRP: £250 = 7p per piece (pretty good for a SW set with many minifigures as well)

Slave 1: 1996 pieces RRP: £170 = 8p per piece

That was just 5 minutes if that, of research (took longer to type this out). Why on earth do you think a UCS MF for £500 with 5000 parts is hysterical? It is EASILY achievable given the above FACTS.

You aren't applying logic or even perspective at all. You are simply stating your opinion.

*edit* just corrected my figures, they were terribly wrong, but are now correct, point specifically remains.

Heck, they could even do a 5000 piece MF for £350 going by the Sandcrawlers price per piece. But it wouldn't be, it would be more like 400 minimum which is Slave 1 price per piece ratio. You tell me why this could not be doable given the recent Ghostbusters set? THAT on the surface seems illogical. Explain that.

It's not even worth continuing this discussion with you at all, all you do is say your opinion, back it up with nothing but more opinion and blank what anyone else says.

At least I had the decency to refute your points with fact and actual logical reasoning.

Still waiting on your explanation of the ghostbusters set being released considering the ONLY other set they have for it is a £40 Ideas set with a duo of films out back in the 80's. FAR far less than what SW has going for it.

IMO TLG could release an updated UCS 10179 at pretty much any price point they wanted and it would be a huge success. As others have pointed out SW Lego popularity is through the roof at the moment and between hardcore fans with disposable income and opportunistic "investors" the biggest problem would be laying hands on one. Higher cost of production and freight may mean lower profit margins for TLG than "regular" sets but that's not the point. As a flagship iconic set its the one almost every kid and adult alike covets and draws them to the Lego and SW brand.

I'm... confused, all of your posts have been opinion. You as a customer can't tell Lego what they can and cannot do. Lego have an extensive Market Research department, they know what people are prepared to pay for sets, they know what people would like to see as a new set, they know what people look for in a set. So its quite ridiculous to come on here and say "Lego won't do this, they won't do that" its not a productive discussion, particularly as you don't have any evidence or research behind your argument. So either you're trolling this thread to wind up members or you're not reading posts.
