Am I the only one who doesn't understand the circles? I get that they're supposed to be sets, I get it's supposed too stylish, but I don't really get what each blob is. I'm too much of a pragmatist I suppose

Larger blobs are sets with more minfigs

I'm not a big fan of price-per-part comparisons because it seems to me that lego sets (especially Star Wars) have far more tiny pieces than ever before.

So basically we're getting more detailed sets... but they're also physically smaller than a set with the same number of parts 5 or 10 years ago..

Which do you value more?, size or detail?

I agree. I never use price per part in my purchasing decisions. My first set as an AFOL was the 8088 Arc 170. Just 400+ parts. But an absolutely huge set nonetheless.

I don't want to go into the whole pricing-issue, but I never buy a set at release (without some kind of discount or special promotion). There's a huge difference between regions, of course, but still. Why not wait a few months, check out different stores etc.?

Unless it's something I NEED to have, I'll usually wait for a better price. Case in point, I don't like to buy battle packs at full price and I'd wanted the Rebels Stormtrooper pack but at around $15 I would never be able to get enough to make it worth it so I always passed on them. Then one day I was at Stop and Shop, I decided to finally grab that pack and the Shadow Troopers, but when I rang them up the Stormtrooper pack came up as $3.99. I cleared out that store and two others, and now I have 16 stormies for about the price of 4.

If a store has toys, I'll hunt there and check back often. My girlfriend likes shopping, so it usually works out in both our favors.

And I don't pay attention to piece count, if I want something and it wins the battle between what I want and what my wallet says I can have, then I get it. The high piece count of Hoth isn't impressive to me, it's mostly white cheese wedges padding the stats. The Ewok Village gives you a more desireable assortment of pieces despite offering less of them.

Ahh thanks.

Agreed. It's why I bought the First Order Transporter for almost $100 because it was the only set from TFA that I wanted to get besides the battle packs. If it's a set I really want I will pay a little bit more for it but if it's a set that i'm ambivalent about it doesn't matter if it's good for the price point i'm less likely to want it if it seems to expensive for something of that size. The amount someone is willing to pay depends on how desirable it is and the right amount of unique minifigures is enough to make someone pay more then they should for a set.

I think the mini figure scale UCS millennium falcon is the perfect example of this. Sure it was $500 dollars but it's also the friggin Millennium Falcon. That is one of the most popular spaceships in pop culture so you're going to have people like Conan and others who are typically not Lego people buying the set because they love the ship. Now that's desirability lol

Can't quite tell what I'm looking at with the Advent Calendar. I'm seeing the following (put in white to avoid spoilers, so highlight to read):

Minifigures:

Builds:

That only gets me to 23 builds. Not sure if I missed something.

I thnk we will get another classic Stormtrooper...?

The price/part metric is such a blunt tool. There are so many factors that determine the price of a set - number of large or complex molds, no. and detail of minifigs, licensing, etc. If you take Scorpus' price/part comparison of SW vs City sets on face value the only conclusion you could draw is that SW sets are generally better value than City ones, and that gap increases as the price increases based on those trendlines. I suspect that would suprise a lot of people based purely on the price/part complaints I see here. One would expect prices to rise naturally over time to reflect inflation and the associated increased costs in "doing business". I actually think TLG has done an admirable job keeping prices fairly stable over the past 10 years or so, particularly if you consider how much better sets are now than 10 years ago in terms of design and inventory of parts. I know the newer waves of SW sets have copped a fair amount of criticism over price but with the desirability of SW sets at a all time high due to the hype generated by TFA, Rebels etc I can't think of a better time to increase prices. That's not price gouging, it's good business practice.

Yeah it certainly is very hard to determine the true value to a set. The one thing I wanted to explore is whether or not TLG has changed the parts count and price over the past few years, and it looks like they haven't, usually giving us the same amount of pieces and minfigs for a similar price.

It also happens to be cheaper than City sets, although City tends to come with larger parts, power functions, huge boat molds, etc. which can inflate the parts/dollar. It would be interesting to see how they compare on weight, though, which I feel is a better metric of the amount of Lego you get in a set

Minifigures:

- Snowman Imperial

Builds:

- Some white pieces with a stud shooter? (Maybe the snowman goes on here?)

That only gets me to 23 builds. Not sure if I missed something.

Looking at a few pictures I found, the Imperial Snowman and the white pieces with the stud shooter come together, the other builds are a death star trooper and an OT Stormtrooper.

Quit mocking hoth. What did you expect. I keep seeing people say its just older sets, thats because they did every set for hoth they basically can. And some people say its not fully enclosed because it should be at that price, Where you expecting a whole diorama? I dont get it some people even say it should have a scale at at with the price it is. It would cost so so so so so much more if it was like that.
