bootz Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Having just missed out on the last DS, and not owning the first, I'll get the new one whether it's a display model or a playset. Personally, I love the concept and execution of the previews set, I don't understand the strict billing of it as a playset. It obviously lends itself more to play than the original, but I love that you can display different scenes simultaneously rather than being limited to just the exterior. Jabba's Palace is a playset, but I display it rather than play with it. Quote
darththeling Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 (edited) Brickr's DS sketch is terrific. Yes, something like that would be spectacular. Over at FBTB in 2008 someone married the two Lego Death Stars together- a remarkable feat. I tried starting to figure out what it would cost to do the same but I got discouraged because some of the playset elements in 10188 seemed to be sticking out of the range of the sphere from 10143 (like the detention block area sticks out a bit) and that would make a tight enclosure around the DS not possible without heavy modification. This guy, etcknight, seems to have it figured out but I gave up! My only hope for the new DS is that it's not the same thing (or smaller!) and more expensive. Assuming we get the piece count in the near future... then we'll know for sure. Edited March 17, 2016 by darththeling Quote

I think we should probably brace ourselves for a smaller and more expensive new DS, but I think that it could still offer an amazing range of both updated and new minifigures and some beautiful detailing given all the new parts that have been included in TLG's range since 10188 was released, plus the general improvement in the SW set design. benderisgreat Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 While I look forward to new DS UCS, I don't think it will be that different from last version. Lego will probably update minifigures in the set, add a couple of new DS Gunners from 2014 Battlepack, update playfeatures with stud shooters and spring shooters. Maybe some interior update , but I doubt it will be a major updates. Quote
Forresto Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 (edited) What Lego should do is include a lot of exclusive figures in the death star set that could only be bought in that set or at least for a while. The figures are what sell the set. What I would do is set it only during ANH since next year is the anniversary. -4 Stormtroopers with belt printing -Luke, and Han with Stormtrooper printing for the belt. -Grand Moff Tarkin, Admiral Yularen (yep put him in there for the people who don't have him), and some of the other named Imperials. -Imperial Officer with a black tunic -2 Imperial Gunners maybe with an alternative print (there were several uniform variations of the gunner even though the helmet remained the same). -2 Imperial naval troopers -Update the Imperial Pilots to the quality of the FO pilots maybe with a new design. -Imperial droids. -C3PO with arm printing -R2-D2 with updated printing -Updated Princess Leia -Updated Chewbacca -Obi Wan from Mos Eisly Cantina set -Darth Vader from the Final Duel -Wedge Antilles or other fan favorite Rebel pilot. As for the set include a micro fighter Falcon, Tie Fighter, Tie Advanced, and X wing. Fewer rooms with more detail. That way the set is super appealing to everyone who wants more Imperials and more of their favorite characters from the first movie. Edited March 17, 2016 by Forresto Quote
Fenom Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 -Updated Chewbacca Not sure how much they could update Chewie from his most recent iteration, except for maybe a satchel added to his current mold somehow? What did you have in mind? Quote

What did you have in mind? Well maybe not a new mold as much as a better printing on the current mold. The most up to date version has creepy eyes, that might just be me though Quote
ISDAvenger Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Though I would prefer something like the last Death Star playset, just with removable panels. Although not a official TLG set, rendition like that is on the horizon. Quote
Junior Shark Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Careful with the speculation on the Death Star- we might have another Assault on Hoth situation when it's unveiled! Quote
Tjahzi Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Bit disappointed we won't see an UCS MF anytime soon. :( Quote
HawkLord Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Careful with the speculation on the Death Star- we might have another Assault on Hoth situation when it's unveiled! Maybe that was the plan - lower our expectations with the Hoth set and then blows us away with the DS. Quote
Junior Shark Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 @HawkLord: One can only hope. Alternatively, we're disappointed with Hoth and the DS.... and it's the Snowspeeder that blows us away. Oh, for the love of everything that is holy ABS, no! Quote
Venkefedo Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 Actually it was reported on a couple of sites that have pretty strong information and a particular pod cast that has a relationship with certain animated show... They were likely all feeding off the same story. If it was the story I mentioned, about the obsessiveness over matching Cushing's every last detail and movement from other films, then it's all just as bogus because that's not how CG artists work. They'd be far better off getting Pygram back (and letting him talk) than investing a ludicrous amount of effort in making a Polar Express zombie or another flawed Jeff Bridges. Quote
Forresto Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 Maybe that was the plan - lower our expectations with the Hoth set and then blows us away with the DS. You think the Death Star UCS will blow us all away? Isn't that it's purpose Quote
Amazing Bricks Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 Maybe that was the plan - lower our expectations with the Hoth set and then blows us away with the DS. Yes! It'll be an improvement compared to the hoth base, but this death star shouldn't be much different than the past death star. I'm still excited for the reveal! I hope it blows our minds away. Quote

That way the set is super appealing to everyone who wants more Imperials and more of their favorite characters from the first movie. This is how my DS is set up right now. I ever since I got it two years ago I have been buying Lego Sets with updated minifigs relevant to the OT timeline. I combined the Final Duel to the DS, and have been buying microfighters relevant to the OT DS since they fit in the landing bay marvelously. I added the Death Star mini canons that comes with the battle pack set. Pretty much everything you mentioned, except the black droids. The ONLY figure missing so far is Grand Moff Tarkin. I was hoping the new Grand Moff would have a grey uniform but no success, I use Rebel minifigs like storm troopers and Yularen, but still. I simply do not how they can outdo themselves on the old one. I noticed that Lego recently simplifies sets by giving more figs but less build. Unless we are talking about the ghostbusters HQ, but I am dying to know what it could entail, and do not really care about the price, I would happily spend 500 bucks easily if this contains like 20 minifigs. There is a lot to out do from the old one. a lot. Quote
SandMirror38 Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 Went to the Melbourne Toy Fair this morning, Lego section was really interesting! They gave me a tour and it was a kinda of 1 one 1 with me being led around by a LEGO Representative. Here's what I've got Star Wars wise: There were NO future Star Wars sets past what we've already seen. Surprisingly all Star Wars sets had placeholders and preliminary boxes (yes, even for the TFA sets that came out in Jan) but sadly the ones we have already seen just had placeholders with the figs and had blurred out figs on box art... Asked some questions and this was what I got: - There is another UCS set coming out this year! The representative said this about the Hoth UCS and UCS sets in general: "Yes, the Battle of Hoth is one of our bigger sets for the year. We have another UCS set but that's more of a refresher of an older UCS we've done but much bigger and more detailed this time around. Again, if you really wanna know I'm sure it's been leaked on the internet but I can't confirm anything else for you" Quote
Only Sinner Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 Ho, ho, well now. Not really a distinct confirmation, but it sounds like it really could be the Death Star to me. Quote
LegoFjotten Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 "...much bigger and more detailed this time"... does not sound like the Death Star to me. Snowspeeder? Quote

LegoFjotten Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 How much bigger do you want to make a snowspeeder? Why do you think I want to make a bigger Snowspeeder? Quote
analogkid81 Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 (edited) Definitely sounds like the snowspeeder. I think Death Star will be a 2017 set. It will be post Rogue One (which is all about the DS) and during the 40th anniversary of Star Wars. The timing is perfect. Edited March 20, 2016 by analogkid81 Quote
